| | Enigma Cross Of Changes CD (1994)
Oxygene music CDs
$11.39 On THE CROSS OF CHANGES, Enigma delves into the mystic with a musical fervor that transcends sampling technologies and popular dance beats. THE CROSS OF CHANGES is a serene yet supremely sensual musical synthesis that might best be characterized as new age hip-hop. Enigma's worldwide hit MCMXC A.D. was notable for, among other things, its use of Gregorian chants as samples in a heady techno mix, which inspired such delirious interest in this ancient music that The Benedictine Monks Of Santo Domingo De Silos are currently enjoying their own Top 10 hit--CHANT.
With THE CROSS OF CHANGES, Enigma's auteur Michael Cretu has merged a series of chants and simple devotional lyrics into a smooth techno-psychedelic wall of sound that is, in contemporary terms, a synthesized flipside to the techno-pop dance grooves of groups like Ace Of Base. Apples and oranges? Certainly, but both groups do employ texture and repetition to particular advantage in a pop context. However, ...

| | Winter's Solstice, Vol. 6 CD (1997)
Oxygene album
$8.49 This installment of the Winter Solstice series presents an of winter-themed recordings. In addition to usual Windham Hill artists such as George Winston and Liz Story, there are appearances by Marion Meadows, Todd Cochran, Narada recruit David Arkenstone, and the quartet of Brian Keane, Michael Manring, Paul McCandless and Lew Soloff. Perhaps surprisingly, the lack of traditional holiday material only enhances this disc's appeal, as do the first-rate performances. Winter's Solstice Vl is more dynamic and less apt to fade into the background of a wintry eve. ~ Ross Boissoneau

$31.89 George Winston, one of the most popular and best-selling New Age artists ever, is known for helping define a type of music (contemporary instrumental), a label (Windham Hill), and for paving the way for artists classified as "New Age" to crossover to pop, jazz, easy listening, and classical audiences. Among the most beloved of Winston's beautiful, reflective, solo piano releases are the albums AUTUMN, WINTER INTO SPRING, and SUMMER. | | Anathema Judgement CD (1999)
Oxygene music CDs
$14.59 After the mildly disappointing Alternative 4, Anathema strikes back with Judgement. Upon first listen, the music and message seem a bit mellow for these doomy metal moguls. Second listen is like a magical rediscovery of a lost art form, the art of creating simple, depressing hard rock that is so emotionally expressive that it bends one's own constitution. Quiet and introspective on songs like "One Last Goodbye" and "Anyone, Anywhere," Anathema has the ability to spew forth raw, volcanic pain on cuts like "Judgement" and "Pitiless" -- the last of which contains the most heart-wrenching solo the Cavanagh brothers have ever penned. Drummer John Douglas also surprises, making an amazing contribution to the album, by writing two of the most memorable songs, "Don't Look Too Far" and "Wings of God." The first is a gorgeous Porcupine Tree-like tune with somewhat upbeat female vocals and melodies. "Wings of God," on the other hand, seems to be a literal interpretation of the album cover, which appears to be God's blinding eye looking down upon the cursed world. One will be amazed at how unconventionally ...
| | Night In The Life Of Shwach CD (2004)
Oxygene songs
$9.35 From the moment he heard Adrock address the brighter points of drinking brass monkey, Matt Shwachman was addicted to music. Whether it was the call and response lyricism of the early eighties or the biting crunch of G n' R-era guitars, Shwach kept his ears and mind open to the influences of his childhood. As he got older, those influences shifted and took a back seat to the sounds and people that would eventually influence his music and his life. Drawing from both soft and hard edges (Bob Marley/ Dave Matthews vs. 311/Pearl Jam), Shwach has worked to develop a musical style that mirrors his personality and interests; introspective and metered on one hand and dynamic and boisterous on the other. An odd twist of fate, a school project of all things, finally set his music in motion. In his senior year of high school, Shwach picked up a guitar and began to create his own answer to the music he loved. In collaborating with his friend Ari Fontecchio, now front man for NYC's Indie rock group On my Signal, Shwach began to find his musical voice. During these sessions, Shwach began to write and perform the songs that sparked his love for creation and collaboration. Early versions of "Monday Driver" and "Better than I'll Ever Be" soon took shape. Over the next several years, Shwach found himself jamming with various friends and local musicians, building up a collection of original songs. He began honing his style by combining elements of Reggae, Rock, Jazz, Hip-Hop and Blues. "I like to keep the listener guessing. I am not afraid to switch-up styles, whether it be from song to song, or within the same song, going from a rock driven verse into a reggae chorus or vice versa." Indeed, it is this no-rules approach that immediately strikes the listener. The versatility of this artist is already apparent in his debut album, "A Night in the Life of SHWACH"; set for release in fall of '04. The album was recorded independently in Dover NH, where Shwach hooked up with friend and former Worcester native Aaron Katz (Percy Hill, Aaron Katz Band) and Andy Gallagher (AKB), co-founders of Waterway Productions. According to Katz, "Shwach has the ability to clearly express his warm and intuitive personality in his songwriting. He is a kind soul with a gentle way of expressing powerful messages." When asked about working with Waterway producers, Shwach said, "It was really good timing, everything fell into place. I wanted to take some of my solo acoustic material and bring it to life with a full-band sound. Aaron and Andy had just begun working with and developing new artists. I had long respected and been ...

| | Strub Ethos Pathos Logos CD (2005)
Oxygene music CDs
$10.15 STRĂśB's third release, in Micheal's words, is the most personal to date. "I said things.. hell.. admited things about myself this time around that led to me ending up in a psych ward just weeks before leaving for the 'Reflect' tour of 2003!" says Michael.STRĂśB intended 'Ethos Pathos Logos' to be, as he referred to it, his "swan song". "It felt so good to finally come clean with the rest of my inner termoil. Where my previous records I wore my heart on my sleave, with Ethos I just tossed what was left of it into the street. Still beating. Just being away from my Kids for so long and all the nightmares and hardships of the last tour gave me the rest of what I needed to break emotionally and just let it all out."Most of Ethos was penned and some recorded during the two and a half month stint in Toronto. "Canada almost seemed like a working vacation to me", says STRĂśB. "I remember tracking out 'Happy' in our downtown flat. It was the first time I'd ever laid vocals in front of anyone. I think that's what finally put me into let it all out mode.I'd walk around downtown in the middle of the night and just feel ...come to terms and understand myself."'Ethos Pathos Logos', like 'Reflect' was finished up in Phoenix, Arizona. After the Ethos tour, Michael intended on moving to Washington to finally be with his Kids full time for the first time since 2001.Exactly two months after the sold out CD Release concert for 'Ethos Pathos Logos' in Phoenix, Arizona, STRĂśB's touring trailer (containing the entire touring rig) was broken into and the van vandalized behind a hotel."I often thought that all I had left in the world that I could control, was my equipment and the ability to make records and express myself. My Kids were far away, I'd lost my fortune and was using my music to make a new start and relocate and start an new life up north with my Children. I lost everything I had left in one night behind a hotel that offered nothing more than a half-assed apology. ...
