Waking The Fallen/Sounding album
$9.59 BEST DAMN THING is the third full-length from pop chart upstart Avril Lavigne and shows the artist has lost none of the cheeky, bratty rock edge that put the singer on the map. The album's lead-off single, "Girlfriend," a bouncy pop-punk romp driven by pell-mell energy and a naggingly catchy chorus, is a case in point. "Girlfriend" kicks off the 12-song set with a bang, telling the listener in no uncertain terms that the album is going to be a fast, fun, high-octane ride.
Whereas Lavigne's sophomore release, UNDER MY SKIN, showed a more reflective side of the singer, BEST DAMN THING doesn't waste time navel-gazing or brooding about relationships gone wrong. Instead the album revels in punchy, uncomplicated pop delivered with a teenaged sneer (and a few well-placed curse words to keep the parents on their toes). Lavigne still seems a ways off from fully exploring her "mature" side, but this batch of energetic tunes is all the better for it. The best teen pop thrives on good hooks and youthful, devil-may-care attitude, and that's exactly what Lavigne delivers.

| | Blink 182 Dude Ranch CD (1997)
Waking The Fallen/Sounding CD music
$6.49 Following the release of their 1996 debut CHESHIRE CAT, Blink 182 returns with a satisfactory sophomore effort. Clearly influenced by the likes of Green Day and Weezer, Blink 182 provides fast, aggressive punk that is also melodic and fun. The trio's lyrics are filled with the angst and alienation that teens can relate to, while injecting humor also. "A New Hope" is an ode to Princess Leia and the Star Wars gang, while "Waggy" is a word bassist Mark Hoppus came up with while belching. Hard-core fans of the band will not be disappointed, as "Degenerate" is a re-recording from their demo tape, and "Lemmings" is from a split 7". All the songs on the record are catchy and infectious and hit single potential abounds. The musicianship is also there, as the chops are ...
| | Rise Against Siren Song Of The Counter Culture CD (2004)
Waking The Fallen/Sounding music CDs
$8.09 For its third full-length, Rise Against side steps the pop-punk breakup music saturating the scene in 2004. Instead, the Chicago quartet channels classic punk-rock unrest, brandishing socially conscious lyrics in front of a backdrop of eager melody and tireless hardcore energy. SIREN SONG OF THE COUNTER CULTURE stretches itself stylistically, from the thrashy "State of ...
| | Rise Against Appeal To Reason CD (2008)
Waking The Fallen/Sounding songs
$11.29 Chicago's Rise Against is a band that remembers the political roots of punk rock. Despite their alliance with a major label, they've maintained their all-important street cred and a dedication to animal rights, not to mention the fundamentals of their melodic sound. Despite their geographic locus, the closest reference point for APPEAL TO REASON is the Southern Cali style pioneered by bands like Bad Religion and The Offspring. The delicate state of America is addressed throughout the album's runtime, with the band comparing the U.S. to the flagging Roman Empire and stumping for social justice on impassioned songs like "Re-Education (Through Labor)" and the acoustic "Hero of War." APPEAL TO REASON is certainly edging ever closer to pop territory, especially on radio-friendly, slickly produced tracks like "Long Forgotten Sons" and "The Dirt Whispered." But still, no one will ever mistake ...
| | Slayer Diabolus In Musica CD (1998)
Waking The Fallen/Sounding album
$8.99 The sledgehammer rhythms and churning guitars of Slayer remain in full effect on DIABOLUS IN MUSICA. Seldom has an album been more aptly titled, as the ominous, minor key riffs and modalities that power the band's compositions are the aural personification of darkness and evil, engendering an inescapable sense of foreboding. The tunes here, from "Bitter Peace" to "In The Name of God," are streamlined metal, containing only the essential elements necessary to drive the band's message home. One aspect of the band's sound that makes them unique among their peers ...
| | Sublime 40 Oz. To Freedom CD (1992)
Waking The Fallen/Sounding CD music
$10.39 The sound is a blistering blend of ska, reggae, and '80s West Coast thrash a la Black Flag, with a healthy dose of spoken-word and rub-a-dub dancehall thrown in for good measure. This magnificent debut was required listening on the Southern California skateboard circuit. Fans of any of the aforementioned musical styles are likely to get a kick out of hearing singer Brad Nowell rollick through songs like "Smoke Two Joints." The attack is a pure assault ...
