Arrangers: Sergio George; José Luis Pagán; Bob Benozzo. From norteño to banda to mariachi, regional Mexican music has seriously dominated the roster of Fonovisa Records and has been the Los Angeles-based company's bread and butter. But occasionally, the Univision-distributed Fonovisa steps outside of regional Mexican music; Fonovisa has done it with Noelia and Arthur Hanlon, and they do it with Puerto Rican singer Juan on his debut album, Con Mi Soledad ("With My Loneliness"). There isn't a trace of norteño, banda, mariachi, duranguense, tierra caliente, grupero, tejano, or any other type of regional Mexican music on this late 2007 release; Juan's focus is romantic Latin pop, and much of Con Mi Soledad is devoted to what is essentially Latin adult contemporary. Ballads dominate this 35-minute CD, most of them power ballads. In fact, the term power ballad easily describes what Juan does on "Abandonados" ("Abandoned"), "Buscando Tu Sombra" ("Searching for Your Shadow"), "Devuélveme la Vida" ("Give Me Back My Life") and the title track. Not everything on Con Mi Soledad is a ballad, however. For example, "Así Es Mi Vida" ("That's What My Life Is Like") is one of the disc's more uptempo tracks, and that song is mildly salsa-ish even though it is a Latin pop tune first and foremost. But for the most part, Con Mi Soledad doesn't have a strong tropical flavor. Juan's primary stomping ground isn't salsa, merengue, bachata, or plena -- it's slick, glossy Latin pop with romantic adult contemporary leanings. And while the material on this disc is not earth shattering, Con Mi Soledad is still a pleasant and competent debut from this Puerto Rican pop singer. ~ Alex Henderson Juan Con Mi Soledad Songs Con Mi Soledad Music Review Purchase Con Mi Soledad CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Lo Mejor Del Chavo Del 8 - Vol. 4 DVD (1973)

| | Aventura K.O.B. (Kings Of Bachata) CDs (2006) With DVD
Con Mi Soledad
$14.39 This 2006 Aventura outing finds "los reyes de la bachata moderna" ("the kings of modern bachata") living up to their esteemed reputation. Throughout the highly percussive set, the Bronx, New York-based group presents lovelorn Dominican roots tunes such as "Los Infieles" and "Llorar," mixing up the proceedings with occasional skits in both English and Spanish. In the wake of Aventura's mainstream breakthrough album, God's Project (2005), the group was so emboldened by its commercial success that it crowned itself the Kings of Bachata and, with some modesty, used the title as an acronym for the concert tour document K.O.B. Live. The double-disc live album (actually a triple-disc package featuring two CDs and a bonus DVD) features Aventura on tour performing their bounty of hits while a stadium full of girls scream in the background. All of the group's biggest hits are performed over the course of K.O.B. Live, including "Obsesión," "Llorar," "Hermanita," "Angelito," "La Boda," "Los Infieles," "Un Beso," and "Mi Corazoncito." The one exception is their biggest pop crossover hit, the Don Omar collaboration "Ella y Yo," which doesn't show up on either of K.O.B. Live's two CDs but does show up as part of a medley on the bonus DVD. The inclusion of all the big hits, along with several skits and other between-song banter, is sure ...

| | Daddy Yankee Talento De Barrio CD (2008)
Con Mi Soledad
$9.95 One of reggaeton's biggest stars, Daddy Yankee returned in 2008 with not only a new album, TALENTO DE BARRIO, but also a film vehicle of the same name. The album (which doubles as the soundtrack to the film) is as impressive a release as one would expect from the superstar. Pulsing with slick beats and epic production, TALENTO DE BARRIO distinguished itself from other reggaeton albums by moving away from the often monotonous stylistic signposts of the genre and allowing for a more diverse sound. "Salgo Pa La Calle" features production from studio aces Luney Tunes and rides skittering synth lines over buoyant beats, while "Suelta" opens with an insistent thump before switching gears into a more traditional reggaeton rhythm. "De La Paz Y de La Guerra," the album's most notable track, drifts the furthest from traditional reggaeton with its distinct meringue vibe. Daddy Yankee delivers on every track and keeps pace with the album's wide-screen feel; in the process he shows the seemingly endless possibilities for a genre once thought to be a creative cul-de-sac. Billed as the soundtrack to the film of the same name, Talento de Barrio is a full-length showcase for Daddy ...
