This film is split in 2. The first half takes place at a quiet rural hospital, while the second unfolds at a much larger and more modern urban medical complex. The film features attention to faces, trees, landscapes, and architecture through the subtle precision of the camera movements. From Thailand, SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY is a drama set largely in two different hospitals. Taking place at different times, two stories become mirrors for one another as they are interwoven. Tao (Nu Nimsomboon) desires Dr. Tei, but is too timid to share his feelings. Meanwhile, at the same hospital, a dentist works on the mouth of a young monk, with whom he builds a unique bond. While the first story occurs in a small town, the second takes place in bustling Bangkok, and explores the lives of the same characters in addition to some fresh faces. Syndromes And A Century Reviews: "SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY, like its curious title, has the logic of a dream....[The film] welcomes you into a world of simplicity and strangeness."-- A. O. Scott, New York Times 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] series of mysterious, often poignant and very funny scenes....It's utterly fresh and alive."-- Tom Charity, Total Film 3 stars out of 5 -- "Weerasethakul delights in being enigmatic....But there's something more accessible and seductive about this treatise on time, memory and the Buddhist notions of identity and reincarnation."-- David Parkinson, Empire "[A]n exceptionally easy and pleasurable watch....The cumulative effect...is exhilarating, and not just because so many of the images and actors are so beautiful."-- Tony Rayns, Sight and Sound

$10.29 Youth gangs took over the slums of Rio de Janiero during the 1960s and didn't relinquish their stronghold until the mid-1980s. Only a sucker wouldn't have turned to crime and this is exactly how naive teen Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) views himself. His attempts in illegal activity fail as he finds potential victims too friendly. Equally unsuccessful in love, he regularly fails to lose his virginity. Blood spills throughout the streets of the Ciudad de Deus as gang leader Li'l Ze (Leandro Firmino da Hora) is challenged by local druglords and a gang of pre-teens known as the Runts. Rocket shoots all of this action ...

Syndromes And A Century review
$13.35 On his second album fronting his band Sadawi, trumpeter and composer Paul Brody continues his work in the avant-klezmer trenches, helping to drag that hundred-year-old music kicking and screaming into the 21st century. On Beyond Babylon he shows his unwillingness to be constrained by any ghetto boundaries, opening the album with an extended deconstruction of the Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts" (which features a hair-raisingly skronky banjo solo by Brandon Seabrook), and making use of elements of both dub (on the contemplative and lovely "Timepeace"), and rock (note the guitar parts on "Fragment of Kafka's Friend") as well as lots and lots of modern jazz. Most of the album is thrilling; Brody's take on the David Krakauer composition "Klezmer à la Bechet" is a joyful romp in five/four meter, "Glass Dance" is a masterful chamber jazz excursion featuring guest Alan Bern on melodica; Brody's own "An Eye for a You" struts out like a brazen ...

In a rare instance of working from his own original script, Sokurov tells the simple tale of a woman in the twilight of her life who embarks on a special journey. As the story unfolds, Sokurov's deeper purpose is revealed, resulting in a work that speaks profoundly about the corrosive nature of war. Opera star Galina Vishnevskaya is Alexandra. She hasn't seen her grandson in seven years and, understanding that her life is coming to an end, she decides to visit him at his army camp in war-torn Chechnya. What at first is a beautiful reunion gradually becomes conflicted, as Alexandra is forced to accept the painful realization that she may no longer be the ...
