Purple Rain: Rock star Prince plays a headstrong, vulnerable young musician known as 'the kid.' He struggles with his own psyche and family pressures of an alcoholic father who beats his mother. He sees his father's madness infecting both his music and his own personal life. Fame: Seven classes a day and a hot lunch. That's what New York City's High School for the Performing Arts guarantees. Fame sings the body electric, celebrating the growing-up process of honing talent, confronting realities, finding love, living life. Director Alan Parker brings an energetic style to the crisscrossing stories of students: Irene Cara, Paul McCrane, Barry Miller, Gene Anthony Ray and Lee Curreri. PURPLE RAIN: Music star Prince stars as "The Kid" in this semi-autobiographical film, which follows the escapades of a tortured young musician trying to survive in a dysfunctional environment. He finds solace in the affections of a lovely young singer, but his first love is making his funky, unique brand of music, which he performs at an ultra-hip Minneapolis nightclub. The Kid must also contend with Morris, his nemesis both in music and romance. The popular soundtrack of this highly successful film contains many of Prince's most popular tunes, such as "Let's Go Crazy", "When Doves Cry," and the title song.
FAME: In this Alan Parker film, teenagers selected for New York City's High School for the Performing Arts push their talents to the limit to make it big in show business. This episodic tale follows savvy Coco (Irene Cara), timid Doris (Maureen Teefy), gay Montgomery (Paul McCrane), macho Raul (Barry Miller), soulful Bruno (Lee Curreri), and others as they struggle to achieve their dreams of stardom while coping with the universal teenage problems of loneliness, insecurity, and embattled, mercurial identity. | | Kenny Chesney I Will Stand CD (1997)
Purple Rain/Fame review
$6.99 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
On this, his fourth release, contemporary country singer Kenny Chesney proves that he's got the kind of consistent musical vision and overall stick-to-itiveness that are necessary to make a permanent mark in Nashville. While Chesney surrounds himself with the same studio vets (Larry Byrom, Brent Mason, Matt Rollings, etc.) that accompany 90 percent of his contemporaries, I WILL STAND sets itself apart by virtue of its nod to tradition. While he's not exactly Robbie Fulks, Chesney is clearly influenced by greats like George Jones and Merle Haggard. Instead of going for the across-the-board appeal of big, soppy power ballads, Chesney favors more authentic-sounding country fare. Titles like "From Hillbilly Heaven to Honky Tonk Hell" give you an idea where Chesney's sensibilities lie.
Recorded at Woodland Studios, Soundstage Studio, Music Mill, Nashville, Tennessee; New River Studios, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Personnel: Larry Byrom, Biff Watson, Kenny Bell (acoustic guitar); Reggie Young , Steve Gibson, Brent ...
| | Very Best Of John Michael Montgomery CD (2003)
Purple Rain/Fame DVD
$10.15 Recorded between 1992 & 2002. Includes liner notes by Robert K. Oermann.
Though he has always essentially been a new traditionalist country singer in the vein of Aaron Tippin and George Strait, John Michael Montgomery found his greatest success with smooth, romantic ballads that recall the work of Glenn Frey as much as that of Merle Haggard. THE VERY BEST OF JOHN MICHAEL MONTGOMERY lives up to its title by including most of the singer's finest and highest-charting singles in both styles, in the process collecting a body of work that virtually defines the "new country" phenomenon. Montgomery has the kind of soothing pipes and perfect phrasing that endear him even to ardent country-haters, and his material has the kind of straight-for-the-gut forthrightness that is sure to attract anyone tired of the irony-drenched hipper-than-thou-isms ...

| | Toby Keith Classic Christmas CDs (2007)
Purple Rain/Fame video
$25.59 Unlike many Christmas albums, which are slightly awkward mixes of new material, old novelty tunes, and solemn hymns, Toby Keith smartly avoids the first and separates the others. A CLASSIC CHRISTMAS is a specially priced two-disc set whose 20 tracks could easily have fit on a single CD, but Keith divides the discs into two different styles. Disc one consists of all the traditional Christmas pop tunes, such as "Frosty the Snowman" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," while the second disc consists of reverent versions of hymns and sacred material.
2007 two CD holiday collection from the Country Music titan. Twelve years ago when Toby Keith released his first holiday album, he was in the midst of breakthrough success as an artist. Two years and two CD releases into his career, he had already sold one and a half million copies and amassed a string of chart topping singles. For many artists ...
