A free spirit and a neurotic Jew fall in love, but in-laws, affairs and exes get in their way in this limited-release movie starring Judith Light, Jason Alexander and Fred Willard. Just as in KISSING JESSICA STEIN, IRA & ABBY is an affectionate ode to love among neurotic New Yorkers. Actress Jennifer Westfeldt co-wrote the script for the 2002 film KISSING JESSICA STEIN, and she has penned another slightly skewed romantic comedy with this enjoyable film. A dozen years of analysis aren't enough to rid Ira (Chris Messina, SIX FEET UNDER) of all his neuroses, and his on-again, off-again relationship with his girlfriend isn't doing anything to help matters. A desire for change sends him to the nearest gym, where he meets easygoing Abby (Westfeldt, NOTES FROM THE UNDERBELLY). The two immediately click, and she unexpectedly proposes marriage and he--even more unexpectedly--agrees. Their coupling seems ideal until Ira discovers that he's her third husband, and his fears begin to take over their relationship.
Ira and Abby inhabit Woody Allen's New York: a city filled with neurotic people, their analysts, and the those who love them. Westfeldt's characters might seem familiar to fans of Allen's light comedies, but everyone in the talented cast crafts a unique person for his or her role. Though Westfeldt and Messina are great as the couple of the title, the highest praise should go to the four actors who play their parents: Fred Willard, Frances Conroy, Judith Light, and Robert Klein. Actor-comedian Klein (HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS) is especially hilarious as the Ira's father, a droll analyst who is quick to remind Ira--and everyone else--that marriage isn't an easy task. Manhattan's Upper West Side also plays a starring role in the film, and the picturesque neighborhood seems the perfect place for falling in and out of love for these New Yorkers. Theatrical Release: September 14, 2007 (Limited) Ira & Abby Reviews: "IRA & ABBY radiates a breathless charm, due in no small part to Ms. Westfeldt's sharp dialogue and engagingly unmannered performance."-- Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times "[D]eeply funny....Westfeldt proves herself an ultimately unselfish partner onscreen -- giving many of the best lines to her hilarious co-star Messina."-- Chad Greene, Box Office

$8.35 In this animated French film, a boy named Champion trains relentlessly for the Tour de France, with the help of his loyal grandmother and overweight dog, Bruno (who loves to bark at passing trains). When the big race comes, Champion and a few of his fellow racers are kidnapped by some box-shouldered thugs who spirit them off to Belleville (a surreal impression of 1930s-1950s Manhattan) where they are forced to pedal as part of a clandestine gambling operation. Bruno and Grandma set out across the sea in a paddle boat to rescue their boy, but once ashore ...

$19.55 Daniel Auteil sheds the dramatic character of Michael Hanneke's CACHÉ to star in this light French comedy. Auteil plays François, an antiques dealer who finds it far easier to locate an Art Deco rarity than a true friend. He has plenty of professional contacts, but an utter lack of people skills leaves him alone after office hours. His business partner bets an expensive vase that he can't produce a friend within 10 days, and François struggles to pick out a best friend in an address book full of acquaintances and childhood chums. He keeps running into fellow loner Bruno (Dany Boon, THE VALET), who is friendly but can't trust anyone. Bruno teaches him to be "sympathique" (sociable) as François continues his search.
Even though MY BEST FRIEND centers on a man's search for a friend, it resembles a standard romantic comedy in its structure. ...

$24.15 Prolific director Michael Winterbottom (24-HOUR PARTY PEOPLE) takes an unusual turn by helming A MIGHTY HEART--a studio picture starring none other than Angelina Jolie. Jolie stars as Mariane Pearl, the widow of WALL STREET JOURNAL reporter Daniel Pearl. Daniel was kidnapped and executed in Pakistan in 2002, and Winterbottom's film centers on the frantic activities leading up to his death. Fellow journalist Mariane revs into action as soon as the disappearance of her husband is announced, calling on the FBI and experts in terrorism to help in the desperate search. With the media circling around the story like hawks, Mariane endures a very public display of grief, and her plight is perfectly captured by the unlikely alliance of Winterbottom and Jolie. The film was shot mostly in Karachi and uses locations that Daniel was known to have visited, adding a heady dose of authenticity to the proceedings. Winterbottom uses shaky, hand-held cameras, which add to the feeling of chaos as multiple organizations descend on Pakistan in the quest to find Daniel; fortunately the director uses some much-needed on-screen captions to make sure viewers are up to speed ...

Director James Wan (SAW) delivers a high-end exploitation film, complete with a washed-out, grainy appearance and some startling violence, but with complex, thrilling action sequences.
