Personnel: Pat Metheny (guitar); Pat Metheny; Antonio Sanchéz (drums). Additional personnel: Christian McBride (acoustic bass); Antonio Sanchéz. Audio Mixer: Joe Ferla. Recording information: Right Track Recording, New York, NY (10/19/2005). Issued in early 2008, DAY TRIP finds jazz-guitar hero Pat Metheny collaborating with the top-notch rhythm section of Christian McBride (bass) and Antonio Sanchez (drums). While McBride anchors the proceedings with understated grace, Sanchez often cuts loose with busy percussive patterns, though he never steals the spotlight away from Metheny. The versatile veteran six-stringer spins deft Wes Montgomery-like lines on "Son of Thirteen," eases into a delicate acoustic mode on "Dreaming Trees," and amps up on "The Red One," resulting in an excellent showcase of his widely renowned artistic range. While preceding Metheny releases were more ambitious (THE WAY UP) or piano-oriented (see his albums with Brad Mehldau), DAY TRIP presents the guitarist getting back to basics while losing none of his eclecticism.Rolling Stone (p.59) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Metheny thrives in a trio format -- the space suits his spiraling runs and the after-ring in his pointed electric sound -- and he responds here with excited improvising in the hypersamba 'Son of Thirteen' and the vintage-Wes Montgomery stroll of 'Calvin's Keys.'" Down Beat (p.82) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he inventiveness of the playing flows....[His] economical solos weave through the changes, spare on effect but rich in substance and imaginative in their contour." Q (Magazine) (p.104) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Is This America? (Katrina 2005)' is a particularly beautiful and atmospheric reflection on New Orleans's devastation." Mojo (Publisher) (p.101) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he sheer quality of the trio's musicianship results in a feast for the ear....DAY TRIP's pastel-hued chamber jazz offers a more intimate ambience." | | Pat Metheny Metheny Mehldau CD (2006)
Day Trip
$15.65 Personnel: Pat Metheny (guitar); Brad Mehldau (piano); Larry Grenadier (bass instrument); Jeff Ballard (drums). This collaboration between guitarist Pat Metheny and pianist Brad Mehldau echoes the 1962 minor masterpiece UNDERCURRENT, a set of improvised duets between guitarist Jim Hall and pianist Bill Evans. Like Hall and Evans, Mehldau and Metheny rarely stray too far from a standard approach, sticking mostly to post bop and ballad frameworks. But the magic of the album comes from the warm, intricate webs the two weave, especially on the quiet, meditative pieces. The pair are joined by a rhythm section on a few tracks, but for the most part, METHENY/MEHLDAU features ...

It's impossible to listen to the last album that Michael Brecker recorded before succumbing to cancer without a sense of profound regret at the loss of a significant talent. Brecker sounds more soulfully energized than ever on a selection that includes complex workouts such as "Anagram," as well as the beautiful, lyrical "Pilgrimage," the last tune the saxophonist recorded.
