Radiohead: Colin Greenwood, Ed O'Brien , Jonny Greenwood, Phil Selway, Thom Yorke. Additional personnel: The Milennia Ensemble. Initially issued in October 2007 with little prior notice, Radiohead's seventh full-length studio outing, IN RAINBOWS, took not only fans but the entire music industry by surprise. Released for a limited time only as an online download, the album was offered by the revered British rock group in a groundbreaking "pay what you want" format, allowing the listener to decide its digital value before an appearance in conventional CD form a few months later. Innovative business practices aside, IN RAINBOWS also garnered attention as Radiohead's most immediately engaging offering since its BENDS/OK COMPUTER days, returning to slightly more accessible pop/rock song structures, while never abandoning the arty experimentalism of subsequent albums. From the shuffling beats of "15 Step" to the amped-up energy of "Bodysnatchers" to the glorious gloom of "Videotape," RAINBOWS presents the full spectrum of Radiohead's artistry, while deftly avoiding vocal melodramatics or excessive technical noodling. When the record hits its peak with the restlessly beautiful "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi" and the emotive, keyboard-driven "All I Need," it's a thrilling reminder of why Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and the lads are one of the best bands on the planet, and it solidifies IN RAINBOWS as an indisputably great Radiohead album. In Rainbows, as a title, implies a sense of comfort and delightfulness. Symbolically, rainbows are more likely to be associated with kittens and warm blankets than the grim and glum circumstances Radiohead is known for soundtracking. There's a slight, if expected, twist at play. The band is more than familiar with the unpleasant moods associated with colors like red, green, and blue -- all of which, of course, are colors within a rainbow -- all of which are present, and even mentioned, during the album. On a couple levels, then, In Rainbows is not any less fitting as a Radiohead album title than "Myxomatosis" is as a Radiohead song title. Despite references to "going off the rails," hitting "the bottom," getting "picked over by the worms," being "dead from the neck up," and feeling "trapped" (twice), along with Radiohead Wordplay Deluxe Home Edition pieces like "comatose" and "nightmare" -- in the same song! double score! -- the one aspect of the album that becomes increasingly perceptible with each listen is how romantic it feels, albeit in the way that one might find the bioport scenes in David Cronenberg's eXistenZ to be extremely hot and somewhat unsettling. Surprisingly, some of the album's lyrics are even more personal/universal and straightforward than anything on The Eraser, the album made by Thom Yorke and Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. "I'm an animal trapped in your hot car," from "All I Need," has to be one of the saddest, most open-hearted metaphors used to express unrequited love. "House of Cards" begins with "I don't want to be your friend/I just want to be your lover/No matter how it ends/No matter how it starts," and the one with the worms includes "I'd be crazy not to follow/Follow where you lead/Your eyes/They turn me." This effective weaving of disparate elements -- lyrical expressions commonly associated with the band, mixed in with ones suited for everyday love ballads -- goes for the music as well. The album is very song-oriented, with each track constantly moving forward and developing, yet there are abstract electronic layers and studio-as-instrument elements to prevent it from sounding like a regression. In Rainbows will hopefully be remembered as Radiohead's most stimulating synthesis of accessible songs and abstract sounds, rather than their first pick-your-price download. ~ Andy KellmanRolling Stone (p.82) - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "All of it rocks; none of it sounds like any other band on Earth; it delivers an emotional punch....[Yorke's] voice has an R&B lilt that suits the songs' romantic directness." Do not dismiss this music. The packaging this disc came in is atrocius. What were these people thinking? Remember, the 10 song disc is the album-proper. The second disc is a "bonus" cd. I will concentrate on the album-proper, for that is the musical brilliance "In Rainbows." Of course, this is MY personal opinion, and I write this, with the intention of maybe helping somone. Radiohead are a rock band at their very core, and that's what this album is, a "rock" album. However, what this band does, maybe better than anyone else(except Porcupine Tree) is incorporate "pop" sensibilities into their almagation of sound. Listening closely, I hear some Jazz integrations(piano on All I Need) which take the music over the top for me. Radiohead are a band who are constantly evolving, progressing with each new album. I almost didn't buy this because I heard it was a "complete snoozefest." The people who are buying into that theory are well, missing the boat. I seriously reccommend getting this, putting on excellent headphones and cranking this thing up. Everything will be revealed to you in subsequent listens. So, no matter what your favorite genre of music is, "In Rainbows" is music that is incredibly composed and recorded. Don't buy into the hype, buy into the music. Great price, here at the CD Universe. Thom Yorke's Great album. One thing you won't ever deny is that this band is always innovating and well ahead of its time. I get the feeling this is more a Thom Yorke's album ( Eraser follow up ? ) rather than Radiohead's. Submitted by Luis (Madrid. Spain) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 4 found this helpful.

| | Robert Plant Raising Sand CD (2007)
In Rainbows
$13.65 Those who find the pairing of '70s rock god Robert Plant with contemporary bluegrass queen Alison Krauss unlikely have probably not been paying attention to Plant's latter-day work, which is full of intimate, acoustic-flavored balladry. While the organic-sounding, low-key Plant/Krauss collaboration, RAISING SAND, is a far cry from Led Zeppelin's stadium rock, it offers up some hauntingly ...

| | Animal Collective Prospect Hummer CD (2005) Digipak
In Rainbows
$9.89 On first listen, Prospect Hummer, the welcome four-song collaboration of obscure folk doyenne Vashti Bunyan with postmodern experimentalists Animal Collective, appears to be a formless wash of vocals and autoharp, a work that ebbs and flows with some power but ultimately signifies nothing. It gradually becomes clear, however, that something more is occurring here; the group is channeling the same sense of primal folk -- not traditional, yet very ancient -- that Bunyan and her friends did on the quiet 1970 masterpiece Just Another Diamond Day and Animal Collective did on a different scale with 2004's Sung Tongs. This is very much a modern recording, focusing on the spirit of the performance rather than song-based material (the only exception is the closer). While the material doesn't have the same infectious power as Bunyan's "Rose Hip November," it deliciously blends the similarities held by both Bunyan in the late '60s and Animal Collective nearly 40 years later. ~ John Bush The amount of critical praise ...
| | Alysha Brooke I Talk Country CD (2006)
In Rainbows
$16.45 Alysha Brooke was born in the Toronto suburb of Oakville, Ontario, Canada on September 26, 1986. Right from the age of 3, when she performed on her first stage it was clear she would be a performer. When Alysha was eight, the family made a move that set the stage for everything that was to follow. They packed up and moved to a quiet 10-acre property in a rural area north of Milton, Ontario. As the second youngest in a family of seven daughters, there was never a quiet moment in Alysha’s home! But Alysha’s large family, many animals including her horse, and country upbringing were some of the biggest influences in her young career and helped to shape her path on the road to a career in country music. By the 11th grade she had become quite an accomplished dancer/singer and was chosen as one of a select few in North America to perform in a prestigious dance gala at Ceasars Palace in Las Vegas. After completing this adventure, Alysha was faced with a decision: song or dance. Needless to say, Alysha went with her first love: song. And as for country music? Well, Alysha fell naturally into this vein, largely influenced by one of her older sister's musical taste. As a youngster, Alysha’s choice in music had always been different than those of her friends, her favorite radio station being a local oldies station -- not the norm for your average 10-year-old! So classic music and the country life combined to shape Alysha Brooke as the country music artist that she is today. After deciding on music as a career, Alysha released her debut self-financed 6 song CD, Nuthin’ but a Chevy, ...
