The Norwegian guitar and synthesizer duo Solefald (Cornelius Jakhelln and Lazare Nedland) were formed as yet another Norwegian black-metal project. Given the school's precedents, The Linear Scaffold (1997) was mostly irrelevant, and would remain their 'heaviest' album. However, Neonism (1999) began to steer towards brainy compositions and philosophical lyrics, that eventually led to the increasing complexity and technical exhibitionism of Pills Against The Ageless Ills (2001), possibly their apex, and In Harmonia Universali (2003), works that evoke King Crimson's and Yes' progressive-rock. The quality of the band's music continues to evolve on Red For Fire, and is sure to a set new precedence in the extreme music realm. Back On Black. 2006. Red For Fire Review

Red For Fire album
$21.94 When Anthrax released AMONG THE LIVING in 1987, the band was a part of a then-burgeoning heavy metal sub-genre called speed or thrash metal. This was an inversion of glam metal. The band members wore worn-out jeans and T-shirts, their long hair was hairspray-free, and not a smudge of make-up was applied to their unsightly mugs. Their music was dense, borrowing speed from punk and hardcore and mammoth guitar riffing from metal, and featured thought-provoking lyrics. AMONG THE LIVING not only served as Anthrax's commercial ...

Red For Fire album
$15.05 The American version of THE SILENT FORCE features two bonus tracks ("Destroyed" and "Jane Doe") not available on the European edition.
Available in the U.S. for the first time in 2008, Dutch symphonic rock heroes Within Temptation's 2004 epic, THE SILENT FORCE, continued the band's incomparable blend of classical, New Age, opera, and heavy metal music. In addition, the latter-day prog rockers' fourth studio release topped the charts all over Europe and scored two major singles ("Stand My Ground" and "Memories").

| | Pelican What We All Come To Need CD (2009)
Red For Fire CD music
$11.49 One had to wonder what Pelican's signing to Southern Lord could possibly mean. To be truthful, while the band did write and perform more structurally formal material on 2007's CITY OF ECHOES, they retained their trademark post-metal aesthetic -- percussive repetition, overtone basslines, and nuanced guitar riffing. On WHAT WE ALL COME TO NEED, they have taken it not a step further, but a step ...

| | U-Roy & Friends Version Galore Vinyl LP (1973)
Red For Fire CD music
$36.89 "Versions galore, you can hear them by the score, I could give you some more for sure," U-Roy shouts out on the title track of Version Galore, and indeed he could and did, recording scores and scores of versions of classic Jamaican hits. This album gathers up a dozen of some of his earliest, all cut for Duke Reid at Treasure Isle studio between 1969 and 1970. Included is one of his chartbusters, a version of the Paragons' "Wear You to the Ball." Paragon vocalist John Holt was responsible for bringing the DJ to Treasure Isle, and U-Roy repaid the singer by versioning a clutch of classic Paragons' songs, five of which appear here. The DJ was obviously a fan, and chatted along to the songs as one would to an old friend, most noticeably on "The Tide Is High" (Blondie would later have a hit with a cover of the original) and "Happy Go Lucky Girl." There again, on "Flashing My Whip," a version of the group's "Only a Smile," U-Roy demands that the trio put a smile on their face, a bit difficult considering the song's intrinsic heartbreak. The DJ's ease with these golden oldies allowed him to adeptly sing along, call out for the vocalists to sing on cue, wander off in other lyrical directions, and still find the perfect spot for his catch phrases. But this talent didn't end with the Paragons and rocksteady, "True Confessions," for example, was a ska-fired, doo wop-inspired hit for the Silvertones, and U-Roy motors away on this with equal ease. Interestingly enough, though, it's evident that without the vocals as a lyrical launch pad, the DJ is rather at a loss. Thus the two instrumentals here are actually the weakest tracks. But it was early days, and U-Roy's ...
| | Nightwish Angels Fall First Vinyl LP (1997) (Import) Picture Disc; Limited Edition; United Kingdom
Red For Fire music CDs
$23.59 When then tiny independent record label Spinefarm decided to take a chance on a brand new group called Nightwish by releasing a modest 500-unit pressing of their first album, Angels Fall First (originally recorded as a simple demo), little did they know this would quickly evolve into their biggest future cash cow, and one of Finland's most successful bands ever! Believe it: such were the humble origins and expectations for both band and album; despite the already quite advanced songwriting abilities of chief architect, keyboardist, and vocalist Tuomas Holopainen, which adorned melodic power metal with gothic, folk, and classical music elements, then topped them with the budding vocal power of a still baby-faced opera student named Tarja Turunen. Completed by guitarist/bassist Emppu Vuorinen and drummer Jukka Nevalainen, the nascent Nightwish were in fact merely scratching the surface of their commercial potential (and ensuing stardom), at this stage; yet they showed amazing courage and versatility on forceful tracks like "Elvenpath" and "Know Why the Nightingale Sings," the Finnish folk-steeped "The Carpenter," and an early glimpse of their latter-day fascination with musical theater in "Beauty and the Beast." So even though there were still several areas where the precocious bandmembers required additional seasoning (e.g. replacing Holopainen's unsatisfying vocal efforts, leaving folk-metal aspirations for other Finnish bands to exploit, and ...
| | Black Sabbath Live At Last Vinyl LP (1980)
Red For Fire songs
$29.09 The first Sabbath set to feature Ronnie James Dio on vocals, this 1982 in-concert recording features "Tomorrow's Dream," "Sweet Leaf," "Killing Yourself To Live," "Children Of The Grave," and five more.
Surprisingly, Warner Brothers never released a live Black Sabbath album in the U.S. during Ozzy Osbourne's years with the band. It wasn't until 1982's double-LP Live Evil (which featured Ronnie James Dio instead of the Oz) that Warner finally put out a live Sabbath album in the U.S. Released in England in 1980, Live at Last is a single LP that was recorded before Osbourne's departure but didn't come out until after he had left. Unfortunately, this LP's liner notes are problematic. Nems lets you know that Live at Last was recorded in Manchester, England, and at the Rainbow in London, but no recording dates are given. And Osbourne's first name is misspelled "Ossie." As for the performances, the Osbourne/Geezer Butler/Tony Iommi/Bill Ward lineup of Sabbath is in decent form ...
