Happy As Annie album
$6.49 If you're looking for the infamous "Cha Cha Slide" song, this is where you'll find it. At first a Chicago phenomenon, the Cha-Cha Slide began strictly as a dance until early 2000 when Casper (aka Mr. C the Slide Man) wrote an accompanying song to go along with the dance ą la "Macarena." By early 2001, Universal had picked up the album for national distribution, igniting a small yet ultimately insignificant craze throughout mainly the Midwest. Besides the title track, there isn't much reason to seek out this album since the rest is undeniably filler, most ...

| | Soft Cell Tainted Love CD (1999)
Happy As Annie music CDs
$9.79 Although they released three full albums, a number of EPs and a seemingly endless stream of compilations, Soft Cell will always and forever be known as "the duo who did 'Tainted Love'." This obscure R&B single, given a techno-trash workover by singer Marc Almond and keyboardist Dave Ball, was an enormous hit on both sides of the Atlantic and has been revived endlessly ever since its 1982 release. This 1994 EP, released to cash in on the song's newfound popularity due to its use in a television commercial, features one of the best of the many versions of the song, a lengthy medley which pairs Ed Cobb's tune with a languid version of Holland-Dozier-Holland's "Where Did Our Love Go." The EP also adds two later Soft Cell singles, "Loving You, Hating Me" and "Where the Heart Is," plus a negligible remix of the title track.
1991 CD maxi single for the duo's top 10 1982 smash.Features the full nine minute medley of 'Tainted Love/ WhereDid Our Love Go' (Original 12in ...

| | Pennywise Full Circle Vinyl LP (1997)
Happy As Annie music CDs
$14.79 Pennywise plays the kind of four-on-the-floor, no-holds-barred Cal-punk that was pioneered by the likes of Black Flag and the Descendents and has come back into fashion in the wake of Green Day, Offspring, et al. As the four members of Pennywise demonstrate on FULL CIRCLE, however, these guys are no Johnny-Rotten-come-latelys. On their fifth album for punk standard-bearer Epitaph, the band displays the kind of raw energy and tireless inspiration that is the mark of every great punk band.
FULL CIRCLE is the band's first album without bassist Jason Thirsk, who died in 1996, and Thirsk's loss can be felt in the troubled, searching themes that run throughout the album. The album is dedicated to him. On "Did You Really," vocalist Jim (Pennywise doesn't go for that whole surname thing) asks "Did you really wanna die?," immediately adding, "Tell me I'm forgiven." Pennywise may take the weight of the world on its shoulders, but if FULL CIRCLE is any indication, this band is strong enough to keep its balance.

More of a companion piece than a follow-up to their debut, TURN! TURN! TURN! established The Byrds' place in the puzzle that was American rock & roll in the mid-'60s, but not for reasons commonly attributed to it. On the one hand, this was another batch of songs furthering the California folk-rock boom. "Turn! Turn! Turn!," the band's second (and final) number one single, was Pete Seeger's musical interpretation of proverbs from the Book Of Ecclesiastes; "Oh Susannah" was a 19th century minstrels' tune; "He Was A Friend Of Mine" was a folk standard; and, as was a norm for the early Byrds, there were a couple of Bob Dylan songs.
Yet the application of The Byrds' sound to these long-known songs gave each of them a new, wholly different life. "He Was A Friend Of Mine" included additional Roger McGuinn lyrics that allude to John F. Kennedy's assassination, turning a mournful standard into a personalized declaration. "Oh! Susannah" was updated at a break-neck rock & roll tempo. The title track became a snapshot, evoking the turbulent '60s as much as it did the Bible. In short, this album depicted The Byrds as an early work in progress, ...

| | Black Devil Eight Oh Eight Vinyl LP (2008)
Happy As Annie songs
$9.58 The final installment in an ostensible trilogy including Black Devil's 1978 debut -- a recently resuscitated, much ballyhooed Euro-disco obscurity -- and its long-delayed 2006 follow-up, 28 After, Eight Oh Eight offers few surprises for fans of the enigmatic outfit's dark, mechanical, analog boogie magic. It's definitely cut from the same cloth as the first two records, which makes it at once unabashedly retro and at the same time not at all unusual-sounding in 2008 -- producer Bernard Fevre could easily be mistaken here for one of his numerous latter-day’imitators. But where 28 After felt perhaps too rigidly informed by the model of its precursor (that is, if it didn't consist wholly or partially of decades-old recordings to begin with), this installment finds Fevre flexing a bit more range. As a result, Eight Oh Eight is probably the loosest, most varied (both from track to track and within each track), and funkiest Black Devil release --’even if those distinctions are fairly slight. The production here is notably slicker, though, which is not especially a positive development: the record sounds more modern, but it's also a lot more faceless, lacking much of the amateurish charm and quirkiness which made the first two albums so endearing to out-disco acolytes. The distinctive voodoo doo wop vocals still crop up now again --’particularly on "Never No Dollars" and the curious, uncharacteristically near-pretty closer "For Hoped" -- but more of the musical interest, such as it is, comes from fairly ...
