| | Halford III: Winter Songs CD (2009) Special Edition; Digipak
Monochrome CD music
$13.75 At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and WINTER SONGS' pastoral cover art -- which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into ...
| | Rockstar Rock Star CD (2001) Original Soundtrack
Monochrome music CDs
$9.99 The most booty-kickin' spoof Metal group to come down the pike since Spinal Tap is Steel Dragon, the Mark Wahlberg-fronted hair band in the film ROCK STAR. Along with other '80s metal tracks and modern tunes, this soundtrack makes for a great listen.
ROCK STAR is based on Tim "Ripper" Owens, who left his Judas Priest cover band to join the real thing. The cover band in the film is Blood Pollution, who give us the catchy, hard-rocking "Wasted Generation." Steel Dragon does a full-throttle cover of Rainbow's "Long Live Rock And Roll" that retains the spirit of the original. Steel Dragon's original tunes such as "Livin' the Life" and "Stand Up" are straight out of 1987, with the screaming vocals and ...
| | Metallica - Live SH.T: Binge & Purge DVDs (1993)
Monochrome songs
$42.15 Rock is all about excess, and this Metallica boxed set embodies that principle. For die-hard fans of the metal band (or those soon to be converts), this mammoth collection features more than eight hours of concert footage. The three audio CDs span five days' worth of shows in Mexico City in 1993. Fans can watch a pair of classic shows from 1989 and 1992 on the two volumes of concert footage. ...
| | Breaking Benjamin We Are Not Alone CD (2004)
Monochrome album
$10.45 When Aaron Fink and Markus James left Universal Records act Lifer to join the then-unsigned Breaking Benjamin, many hard-rock fans were skeptical. WE ARE NOT ALONE, the latter band's sophomore effort, promises to silence the naysayers for good. Led by powerful vocalist Ben Burnley, Breaking Benjamin delivers a snap-tight, streamlined ...
| | Scorpions Tokyo Tapes CD (1978) Remastered
Monochrome CD music
$11.99 If you played in a hard rock band during the '70s, what were you likely to be doing circa 1978? Why, recording a live album, of course. Preferably a double vinyl set, and in Japan to boot. The Scorpions were no exception, and in fact, their Tokyo Tapes were captured only days after Cheap Trick's At Budokan in April 1978. Though hardly as inspired or successful, the Tokyo Tapes set still serves as an ideal greatest-hits collection of the Scorpions' first decade. This recording also showcases the spectacular playing (and occasionally, the dreadful singing) of guitarist Uli Jon Roth, who would soon leave the band for a misguided solo career, but displays some jaw-dropping technique here, most notably on the epic "We'll Burn the Sky." The rest of the band also puts in competent performances on such early standards as "In Trance," "Fly to the Rainbow," and "Speedy's Coming." The material on disc one is consistently strong, ...

| | Emperor IX Equilibrium Vinyl LP (1997) Limited Edition
Monochrome songs
$18.29 LX EQUILIBRIUM is the third release from death metal superstars Emperor. It includes "Decrystalizing Reason" and "Sworn."
Emperor needs little introduction. As one of the leading exponents of the extremely ill-reputed Norwegian black metal scene (known for true-life demonic acts ranging from church burning to outright murder), the group's fearsome reputation -- on and off the stage -- precedes them. And with their third full album, IX Equilibrium, the group once again shows absolutely no mercy for lesser mortals by delivering another sonic onslaught of nearly impenetrable proportions. Drummer Trym doesn't so much keep time as pummel his kit incessantly, while guitarists Ihsahn and Samoth contribute an equally oppressive wall of sound laced with keyboard textures so demonic they were seemingly concocted by the great horned one himself. The third track, "An Elegy of Icarus," is the first to scale back the ...
