One of the many branches extending from the Broken Social Scene tree, Apostle of Hustle is essentially vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Andrew Whiteman and a loose cadre of fellow BSS-affiliated Canadian musicians. Mixing laid-back indie-folk tendencies with a keen sense of songcraft (see the oddball pop of "My Sword Hand's Anger"), Whiteman has a created a charming album that will likely appeal to fans of the mellower, lo-fi side of the Broken Social Scene collective.Spin (p.88) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[A] vivacious sampling of cultures and a swinging leap from his somber, lo-fi 2004 debut..." Magnet (p.99) - "[A]n electrifying emulsion of dirty rock and pristine pop, of raw electric guitars and sleek Daniel Lanois-esque atmospherics." National Anthem Of Nowhere album
$9.55 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it mixes up the show tunes, gospel, and Christmas carols with covers of Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," and ...
| | Jimmy Buffett Buffet Hotel CD (2009)
National Anthem Of Nowhere CD music
$9.74 Since Jimmy Buffett never leaves his comfort zone, it's hard to call 2009's Buffet Hotel a return to roots but, in a way, it is. Discounting the mock rap on "Turn Up the Heat and Chill the Rosé," this album doesn't even have the lingering country and reggae flavors that seasoned 2006's Take the Weather with You, with all of the songs riding a cool, mellow country-rock wave, the kind that has been his stock-in-trade since the `70s. There's a difference between being part of a tradition and being stuck in the past and Buffett is surely in the former, not shying away from the new millennial mess, admitting that we all have "A Lot to Drink About" and never flinching from his advancing years, most movingly on a ...
| | Pink Funhouse CD (2008) Explicit
National Anthem Of Nowhere music CDs
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath ...

National Anthem Of Nowhere album
$25.45 The Drive-By Truckers don't need an agenda to be a good band. Sure, Southern Rock Opera more or less anointed the Truckers as a smarter, more attentive Lynyrd Skynyrd, and critics, in turn, made them famous for all the wrong reasons. And while critics tossed around adjectives like "brash" and "raunchy" and dug out their riffs on Southern rock revival and the renovation of country, Gangstabilly, DBT's debut, went largely overlooked. No mock-rock operas or anxious, insistent Southernism here -- Gangstabilly keeps its charm by keeping it ...

| | Donald Byrd Byrd In Flight Vinyl LP (1960) TGV
National Anthem Of Nowhere music CDs
$29.79 By the time of this fourth Blue Note album by trumpeter Donald Byrd, it became clear that his playing was becoming stronger with the passing of time. This album features separate studio sessions from January and July of 1960 with constants Duke Pearson on piano and drummer Lex Humphries. Bassists Doug Watkins and Reggie Workman split duties six tracks to three, as do tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley and alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, making for some interesting sonic combinations, although Byrd is the dominant voice. Several of these selections are penned by Byrd, but it is pianist Pearson who contributes four of the most potent compositions on Byrd in Flight, supplying the wings for these quintet recordings to take off with. Of the Pearson originals, "Gate City," with Mobley, is an attractive soul shuffle with ...
