Sound Of Silver
$17.57 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed ...
| | Norah Jones Fall CD (2009)
Sound Of Silver
$14.44 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice of producer, Jacquire King, best-known for his work with Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon, but King hardly pushes Norah in a rock direction; The Fall does bear some mild echoes of Fiona Apple or Aimee Mann in ballad mode, but its arrangements never call attention to themselves, the way that some Jon O'Brien productions do. Instead, the focus is always on Jones' voice and songs, which are once again all originals, sometimes composed in conjunction with collaborators including her longtime colleagues Jesse Harris, Ryan Adams, and Will Sheff ...
| | Lou Reed New Sensations CD (1984) Reissue; Remastered
Sound Of Silver
$11.18 Lou Reed never struck anyone as one of the happiest guys in rock & roll, so some fans were taken aback when his 1984 album New Sensations kicked off with "I Love You, Suzanne," a catchy up-tempo rocker that sounded a lot like a pop tune. After reaffirming his status as one of rock's greatest poets with The Blue Mask and Legendary Hearts, what was Reed doing here? Lou was having a great time, and his pleasure was infectious -- New Sensations is a set of straight-ahead rock & roll that ranks with the most purely enjoyable albums of Lou's career. Reed opted not to work with guitarist Robert Quine this time out, instead overdubbing rhythm lines over his own leads, and if the guitars don't cut quite as deep, they're still wiry and in the pocket throughout, and the rhythm section of Fernando Saunders and Fred Maher rocks hard with a tough, sinewy groove. And while much of New Sensations finds Reed in a surprisingly optimistic mood, this isn't "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by any stretch of the imagination. On "Endlessly Jealous," "My Friend George," and "Fly Into the Sun," ...

| | Nirvana Live At Reading CD (2009)
Sound Of Silver
$11.16 Certain concerts create a legend as soon as the final note ceases to ring. Nirvana's headlining appearance at the 1992 Reading Festival is one of these shows, a concert that arrived at precisely the right moment and stands as testament to a band at the peak of its powers...and right before things started to turn sour within the Nirvana camp. Despite the happy news of the birth of Frances Bean Cobain a mere 12 days before this August 30 festival, rumors swirled around Nirvana right up until the band hit the stage. Kurt Cobain took full advantage of these scurrilous stories, making his entrance in a hospital gown and wheelchair pushed by journalist Everett True. Cobain feebly reached for the microphone to croak out the opening lines of "The Rose," only to collapse onto the stage, milking the drama for a moment before leading Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl through a ferocious "Breed." This impish sense of humor has been obscured over the years, lost under the weight of the band's tragic legacy, along with the fact that Nirvana could actually be fun as well as furious. Live at Reading brings all this roaring back. This is Nirvana's purest blast of rock & roll: there's a boundless, invigorating energy here and, just as importantly, ...
| | Bright Eyes Noise Floor (Rarities 1998-2005) Vinyl LP (2006)
Sound Of Silver
$17.49 Given his rate of production, one might rightfully assume the artist is sitting on towers of unreleased tracks. NOISE FLOOR (2006) brings some of those tracks together. Singles, collaborations, covers, and other rarities fill out the set list here, and represent what Oberst does best by ranging from intimate folk ("Soon You Will Be Leaving Your Man") to articulate, expansive pop ("Trees Get Wheeled Away") to the spare and spooky ("Weather Reports"). Detractors are unlikely ...
| | Make Believe Of Course Vinyl LP (2006)
Sound Of Silver
$11.19 Make Believe -- the unholy union of Joan of Arc's guitarist Sam Zurick and vocalist Tim Kinsella, with his cousin Nate on drums and Wurlitzer and bassist Bobby Burg -- spit up their second full-length on Flameshovel. Apparently Nate Kinsella spent a couple of months in jail in Oklahoma for "outraging public decency" after taking off his shorts on-stage and ringing them out over the crowd at a Christian youth venue. Thankfully, it was only a misdemeanor and he only had to pay a grand and do the time. Anyway, the record was recorded after that frustrating experience, and as such it's a very different outing from either their self-titled EP or last year's Shock of Being (which was released on the same date -- October 3 -- a year prior). While the previous album featured a more straight-ahead hard rocking sound, Of Course is more angular, quirky, and just plain weird. That said, it's exciting, full of unexpected twists and turns where steely guitar riffs give way to spaces, rough edges and time shifts. It isn't prog or anything -- it's about as far as you could get from that, actually, it's the opposite -- it's primitive. ...
| | Circus Vinyl LP (2007)
Sound Of Silver
$5.99 In January 2006, The Circus released their first self-produced full length CD. The Central Jersey indie band that formed in August 2004 has been influenced by The Mars Volta, At the Drive-In, Cursive, The Blood Brothers, The Beatles, The Decemberists, Brand New, Radiohead, and The Faint. Their sound can described as experimental indie rock with catchy guitar riffs and upbeat dance synthesizer harmonies that will stick in your head for days.In May 2005, while piecing together thoughts for their album and trying to build a loyal fan base, The Circus landed a spot on the 2005 ...
