| | Sonic Youth Destroyed Room: B-Sides And Rarities Vinyl LP Record Sonic Youth Discography of CDs
Although it's almost impossible to avoid the whiff of contractual obligation surrounding the release of Sonic Youth's 2006 rarities comp, DESTROYED ROOM (the band's long-running stint with Geffen was drawing to a close at the time of the record's release), the various live tracks, outtakes, b-sides, and compilation tracks (culled mostly from the band's early-2000s catalog and chosen by the band members themselves) should still hold plenty of interest for SY fans. The standout cuts include a track from an Alice Cooper tribute ("Is It My Body"); a trio of improvised tracks from the Noho Furniture Sessions that perfectly capture the band's stake in the 21st-century musical avant-garde; a lovely Japanese-only instrumental from SONIC NURSE entitled "Kim's Chords"; and an alternate version of one of Sonic Youth's finest songs, "The Diamond Sea." DESTROYED ROOM isn't up there with the band's classics--albums, experimental ephemera, or otherwise--but this 12-track collection reinforces Sonic Youth's status as one of the most prolific and restlessly creative bands in rock.
Sonic Youth: Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo, Steve Shelley, Thurston Moore.
Additional personnel: Jim O'Rourke.
Rolling Stone (p.112) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[The collection] draws largely from the twenty-first century....More ruminative than raw." Spin (p.86) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's nice to hear such a brainy bunch not overthinking things." Q (p.111) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Queen Anne Chair' is tight, powerful and focused....Over 27 sprawling minutes of light-and-shade guitar noise..." Uncut (p.85) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] nicely ambient version of their usual hellacious harmonics, but also a reminder how the band have attained creative control on a major label." CMJ (p.39) - "It's a worthwhile expenditure to have these recent obscurities in one spot." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.48) - "[T]his is a consistently spellbinding adventure in sound..." Destroyed Room: B-Sides And Rarities album
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, ...

Destroyed Room: B-Sides And Rarities songs
$33.99 A Hard Day's Night was the first Beatles album of all-original material, and the first to feature George Harrison playing his Rickenbacker electric 12-string guitar (on the opening chord of "A Hard Day's Night," for instance). The distinctive sound of the 12-string inspired countless guitarists including Roger McGuinn and David Crosby of the Byrds. The film from which these songs hail remains a classic combination of happy '60s naïveté and nascent hipster wit. Many of the most important rock bands to emerge in the latter half of the '60s came into being because of A Hard Day's Night's irresistible vibrancy. The tunes flow like the finest red wine, as the title track leads to the glorious harmonica of "I Should Have Known Better" and the powerfully poignant "If I Fell."
A Hard Day's Night not only was the de facto soundtrack for their movie, not only was it filled with nothing but Lennon-McCartney originals, but it found the Beatles truly coming into their own as a band. All of the disparate influences on their first two albums had coalesced into a bright, joyous, original sound, filled with ringing guitars and irresistible melodies. A Hard Day's Night is where the Beatles became mythical, but this is the sound of Beatlemania in all of its giddy glory. Decades after its original release, its punchy blend of propulsive rhythms, jangly guitars, and infectious, singalong melodies is remarkably fresh. There's something ...

$13.95 The Bright Mississippi stands alone among Allen Toussaint albums. Technically, it is not his first jazz album, for in 2005 he released Going Places on the small CD Baby-distributed Captivating Recording Technologies, a label run by his son Reginald, but for most intents and purposes -- and for most listeners -- The Bright Mississippi might as well be his first foray into jazz, since it's the first to get a major-label production and release as it's a de facto sequel to Toussaint's successful, high-profile, 2006 duet album with Elvis Costello, The River in Reverse. Like that record, The Bright Mississippi is produced by Joe Henry, who has a knack for a sound that's clean yet soulful, one that lets the music breathe ...
