Having departed from the Def Jux label, the DJ/producer/turntablist behind the indie rap outfit Mhz and former golden boy of El-P's label, has also made a marked departure from his previous work on this 2007 release. The Columbus, Ohio, native's third solo album sees him personally handling all the instrumentation (vocals, too) in a 15-track moody pop effort that takes more cues from Blur and Beck than from Cut Chemist or DJ Shadow.Q (p.122) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Reality' has echoes of both Elbow and Beck, while the excellent 'Have Mercy' chugs along like a Funkadelic version of the Eagles. An unexpected treat." Alternative Press (p.192) - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "Musically, RJ still feeds us with flourishes of hip-hop....The record is doused with warm synths, acoustic guitars and bits of piano." CMJ (p.40) - "Underneath the squelching, glossy keyboards and laid-back, blue-eyed soul vocals, the emphasis is still on rhythm." RJD2 Third Hand Songs | 1. | Intro |

Third Hand album
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef Jean -- is giddily addicting, a celebration of all the strange sensuality that comes out at night. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Luther Vandross This Is Christmas CD (1995)
Third Hand CD music
$6.55 This stellar 1995 Christmas album is not your typical release of holiday standards. In fact, Luther helped pen most of the songs on this album. His originals include the excellent "With a Christmas Heart," "This Is Christmas," and "A Kiss for Christmas." But for those with an allegiance to the standards, "My Favorite Things" and "O' Come All Ye Faithful" are duly included among these 10 lovely tracks. Well-known bassist/arranger/producer Marcus Miller plays on some of the tracks, while well-coifed '80s rock balladeer Richard Marx co-wrote "Every Year, Every Christmas." For R&B fans, it's hard to do much better than THIS IS CHRISTMAS.
Recorded at The Hit Factory Studios, Power Station and Clinton Recording Studios, New York; Camel Island, Los Angeles, California.
Engineers include: Ray Bardani, Stanley Wallace, Paul Brown.
Personnel: Luther Vandross (vocals); Darlene Love (vocals); Paul Jackson, Jr. (guitar); Clarence Clemons (tenor saxophone); Marcus ...

Third Hand songs
$7.59 Principally recorded at Record One Studios & Larrabee Studios, Los Angeles, California. Originally released on Epic/Sony (45400).
Digitally remastered by Bernie Grundman (Bernie Grundman Mastering, Los Angeles, California).
After a lengthy gap of nearly five years, Jackson had to pull something out of the bag. BAD was, after all, a difficult act to follow, and the press were trying to prove he was bonkers. This was a pretty decent attempt and fell in with the hard dance beat of the early 90s. "Heal The World" was much like the old melodic Jackson, and it became a major hit. "Black Or White" was the best of the rest, a well-constructed song in which he attempted to repeat "Ebony And Ivory" in the context of 90s dance music.
Despite the success of Bad, it was hard not to view it as a bit of a letdown, since it presented a cleaner, colder, calculated version of Thriller -- something that delivered what it should on the surface, but wound up offering less in the long run. So, it was time for a change-up, something even a superstar as huge as Michael Jackson realized, so he left Quincy

Third Hand album
$11.79 In 1977, Dangerhouse was one of the first independent labels to jump into the fray and document the burgeoning West Coast punk rock scene, and all these years later their taste and judgment seems damn near faultless -- they released records on many of California's finest first-wave punk bands, including X, the Avengers, the Weirdos, and the Dils, and future members of Wall of Voodoo and the Gun Club were lurking among the members of Dangerhouse's other acts. Thankfully, the folks behind the label were also mindful of production quality, and were able to make great sounding records despite limited means -- their stuff simply sounded better than what most indie labels were offering in the early stages of the game. Dangerhouse, Vol. One collects 12 classic cuts released between 1977 and 1979, including stone classics like X's original recording of "Los Angeles," the Avengers' anthemic "We Are the One," the Dils' blazing "Class War," Black Randy and the Metrosquad's superbly perverse ...

$10.55 This 2009 release consists of studio demos recorded as a trial run before the actual sessions for 2001's AS THE ETERNAL COWBOY. The songs sound somewhat more immediate and raw as a demo; there's a bit more grit audible in Gabel's voice overall, and the unfinished quality carries on throughout the album where everything seems just ...
