Perhaps this whopping four-CD, 108-track collection should be titled "Her Greatest Hits, And More." Jo Stafford, a premier jazz-pop singer of the late '30s onward, had a great voice, substantial musicianship behind her, an undeniable sex appeal, and a seemingly limitless repertoire, if you judge by what's on this compilation. Each CD is split into thematic or chronological segments. CD one -- "Pied Pipers, Tommy Dorsey, Early Recordings" is her entry point as a big band "chick" singer including seminal tunes "In a Little Spanish Town," "Yes Indeed," and "Embraceable You." CD two, consisting of "V Discs, Airchecks, Solos, Collaborations" may be the least interesting, but features familiar tunes as "Haunted Heart" and "The Gentleman Is a Dope." Her actual "greatest hits" are on CD three, while CD four is a mix of obscurities and jazz standards wrapped in the caveat "Pops, Jazz, Standards, Showtime." Her comedic work as the faux diva Darlene Edwards is not included, but that's OK, as fans of Stafford should salivate for the opportunity to buy this comprehensive overview of her career, lovingly issued by the reliable JSP label. ~ Michael G. | Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Good collection for Stafford fans This is a good collection for fans of Jo Stafford, who in my opinion was one of the best singers to come out of the big-band era. The 108 tracks on the four discs include several recordings that she made with the original, eight-member Pied Pipers in her pre-Tommy-Dorsey days, as well as her work with Dorsey and her Capital and Columbia recordings. Unfortunately, they do not include any of her hilarious work as half of the Jonathan and Darlene Edwards duo.
As with many bargain-priced collections published by certain English and European companies, all of the recordings are at least 50 years old and are probably in the public domain, at least in the United Kingdom. In this case, the latest recording was made in 1955.
The way that the recordings are annotated is less than ideal. Each disc has its own case and four-page booklet. The names and track numbers of the recordings appear on the back of the case but the credits and dates appear on the back of the booklet. I found myself constantly flipping back and forth between the two. Also, the notes on the inside of each booklet are in very small type and hard to read.
Proper Music, which publishes the same types of collections, does a better job of it with their four-disc Proper Boxes for about the same amount of money. However, this set is still a good deal. Submitted by rsimanski (Sterling, VA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
