Jeff Lorber reached his commercial peak with Private Passion, an album that has more to do with urban contemporary singing than it does with instrumental pop-jazz. Because it features R&B singers so prominently, Private Passion is a perfect example of what Lorber meant when, in 1998, he complained that the mid-'80s found him becoming "a sideman on my own records." In the 1990s, the keyboardist would return to giving himself a lot of solo space, but on Private Passion, Lorber the soloist/instrumentalist isn't the main attraction. The main attraction is the R&B singing of Michael Jeffries and Karyn White, whose memorable performance on the single "Facts of Love" not only put her on the map in the R&B market, but also did a lot to make this album the big seller it was. Private Passion does contain a few pleasant, if unremarkable, pop-jazz/NAC instrumentals. Freddie Hubbard takes a melodic flügelhorn solo on "Kristen," while guitarist Larry Carlton is employed on the Caribbean-flavored "Jamaica." But on the whole, Private Passion leaves jazz fans out in the cold, although it's often impressive and rewarding from an urban contemporary standpoint. ~ Alex Henderson Jeff Lorber Private Passion Songs | 1. | Back in Love |

| | Shirley Horn I Remember Miles CD (1998)
Private Passion CD music
$12.39 I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and admiration for each other's music lasted through the years, and Shirley Horn's 1991 recording YOU WON'T FORGET ME, was one of the last recordings Miles Davis made.
Horn selected mostly ballads from Davis' Columbia Records catalogue for her tribute because, as she explains in the liner notes, Davis liked her to sing ballads, and ballads are Horn's specialty. She can slow down time in a unique and spellbinding way. Her sultry and smoky vocals are intimate and conversational, relying on odd metered timing and silence, rather than volume, to make ...
| | Rippingtons 20th Anniversary Celebration CD (2006) With DVD
Private Passion music CDs
$15.65 Is it possible to pinpoint precisely when a popular style came into being? In one instance, a case could be made for smooth jazz's watershed moment: the debut of the Rippingtons. Formed in 1986, the Rippingtons are the brainchild of jazz guitarist and pianist Russ Freeman. They are to smooth jazz what Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers were to hard bop--namely, a musical college whose "alumnae" became stars of smooth jazz, a style unifying the most melodious ...

| | Riccardo Fassi Toast Man CD (1990) (Import) Germany
Private Passion music CDs
$27.59 Pianist Riccardo Fassi looks like somewhat of a geek on the front cover, standing on a landscape comprised entirely of sand with his knees bent and wearing a striped shirt, shorts, suspenders, and a sunhat, but the music he composes and performs with both of these bands is anything but doltish. In fact, Fassi's complex, eerie, and deeply lyrical jazzscapes are what the new Italian jazz is all about. With trumpeter Flavio Boltro, bassist Massimo Moriconi, Alberto D'Anna on drums, and guests like Dario La Penna on electric guitar in places, Fassi is making some of the most sophisticated yet deeply melodic and engaging music on the scene. Using post-bop figures and juxtaposing them against Italian folk song forms, classical motifs, and a deft sense of chromaticism, Fassi erects towering harmonic architectures that reveal their existence inside a well-defined space that is easily articulated with emotional warm, depth, and technical sophistication. ...

| | Zopoglou, Alkis & Kontrabando Elephant CD (2008)
Private Passion music CDs
$13.15 Kontrabando is a group of musicians experimenting with the colours of music and expressing themselves through the use of various instruments both from eastern and western music fields. Formed in 1999, and based in Kavala, Greece, “K” is the musical vehicle of master kanun player and composer Alkis Zopoglou. A wide range of musical instruments have been introduced to the band (oud, lyre, double bass, keyboards, clarinet a.o.), serving the musical needs of the personal compositions. The year 2003 saw the release of “K”’s first record: “Cargo” that came out through Greece’s most prestigious independent label, Libra Music (www.libramusic.gr), and consisted of 13 tracks - an amalgam of eclectic easterness and experimenting westerness. The album also featured some of Greece’s most renowned soloists: Nikos Sidirokastritis (drums), Vangelis Karipis (percussion), Kostas Theodorou (double bass) and Giorgos Zachariou (clarinet). Raved by the critics as one of the year’s best, “Cargo” established “K” as one of the hottest names in the Greek music scene. The band toured throughout Greece, and also performed in music festivals in Istanbul (Turkey), Ohrid ...
| | Campbell, Scott & Friends Making It Up As We Go CD (2008)
Private Passion songs
$13.95 This CD contains a collection of songs that Scott prepared in collaboration with his friends Clint Anglin, Tom Breshers, Mike Caro, John Daubert, Betsy Jones, Robert Pickens, Hillary Strayer, Resa Thornburg and Louis Twinn. Most are members of the Just Plain Folks music organization. As they are an eclectic group of people, so are the songs. A couple are pop, a couple are rock, and some are folk. One or two have a bluesy or country feel. There are any number of combinations of co-writers and performers - they just did what seemed like a good idea at the time, making it up as they'd go.The CD is accompanied by a 12 page booklet giving biographical information and the stories behind the songs. Original cover art was drawn by JPF member Tobias White and the songs were mastered at Sub Studio in Staten Island. Because this was purely a labor of love, $5 per CD and all of the artists' shares of digital downloads will be donated to the organization that brought most of them together: Just Plain Folks. If you hear something you particularly like, links to some of the musicians and writers are given at the bottom of this page. Here are the details:Still Making It Up As We Go - written by Campbell, performed by Campbell/Caro/Thompson/Palagreno ...
| | Gary Lucas Rishte CD (2009) (Import)
Private Passion album
$14.69 Coming off the triumph of his brilliant Edge of Heaven album (on which he adapted vintage Chinese pop music to a modern and often blues-flavored idiom), guitar god Gary Lucas is back with a duo effort featuring Indian singer Najma Akhtar. And while Rishte is a very enjoyable album, it doesn't quite achieve the same level of transcendence as Edge of Heaven did. It may be because the blues blends better with Chinese pop music -- which, like the blues, tends to center around pentatonic melodies -- than with Indian music, the fundamental hallmark of which is enormous melodic complexity. Granted, Indian music shares with the blues a tendency toward slides and microtonal ornaments, but still: asking a singer like Akhtar to tackle Skip James' "Special Rider Blues" is a bit like asking Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to sing "Happy ...
