Brothers Nikki Sudden and Epic Soundtracks started the Swell Maps in the early 1970s while in their teens. The band's chaotic mix of arty experimentalism, garage primitivism, and punk rock gumption established a template for the British DIY post-punk movement of the late '70s and early '80s. The band's 1979 debut, A TRIP TO MARINEVILLE, perfectly captures the band's two disparate yet strangely compatible elements. Songs such as "Spitfire Parade," "Another Song," and the rousing opener "H.S. Art" burn with youthful abandon and a glammy, knowingly primitive cool. Yet by "Don't Throw Ashtrays at Me" and "Bridge Head," the listener is presented with an almost completely different band, as improvised noise, clattering percussion, found sounds, and ambient piano soundscapes overtake the more straightforward rock elements that introduced the album. The hypnotic pulse of Krautrock creeps in on "Full Moon in My Pocket" and "BLAM!!" and the Sonic Youth blueprint is presented fully formed on "Gunboat." For the Swell Maps, the call to arms of punk rock wasn't about empty gestures toward anarchy and social rebellion, but rather the notion of a personal revolution via the limitless possibilities of art. A TRIP TO MARINEVILLE perfectly captures this realization.

Swell Maps: Epic Soundtracks (vocals, various instruments); Dave "Phone" Barrington (vocals, guitar, violin); Jowe Head (vocals, guitar, saxophone, piano, bass guitar); Richard Earl (guitar, Hammond b-3 organ, background vocals); John Cockrill (bass guitar, hand claps, background vocals); Nikki Sudden.

Uncut (p.123) - 4 stars out of 5 - "MARINEVILLE subverts bilious sneers with old-fashioned yarns set to raucous guitar thrashes..."
Magnet (pp.96-7) - "[T]he Maps embody the kind of free-wheeling, dangerous joy that results when six British teenagers completely disregard the rules....This debut is a drunken detour into two-chord post-punk."

Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have two strong albums of new material to draw upon, but as an album, Good Evening New York City plays a lot like Back in the U.S. with a whopping 17 of its 35 tracks shared between the two titles. More importantly, the vibe is the same, with Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and "I'm Down," there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises doesn't mean no satisfaction, and this is plenty entertaining Unlike its 2002 predecessor, Back in the U.S./Back in the World, Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 ...

Trip To Marineville
CD $14.29  4.3 stars Top 100 Audio Samples
John Fogerty released his first solo CD, an album of covers on which he played all the instruments, under the name the "Blue Ridge Rangers," and he revives that concept on 2009's THE BLUE RIDGE RANGERS RIDES AGAIN. Where the first smacked of the righteous zeal of a young purist, RIDES AGAIN is a lot looser in its attack, which is reflected in the way it splits the difference between country and rockabilly classics and reflective numbers from '70s songwriters. These unexpected covers of John Prine, Delaney & Bonnie, and John Denver offer a peek at a sweeter, gentler Fogerty, a Fogerty who can also be heard on how he lays back instead of pushing ahead on Buck Owens' "I Don't Care (Just as Long as You Love Me)" and Ray Price's "I'll Be There," and even on his revamp of his own neglected swamp rocker "Change ...

This is an Enhanced audio CD, which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Additional personnel includes: Melanie Crandall (cello); Neils Galloway (French horn); David Hernandez (bass). The Shins appeared out of the middle of New Mexico as if by magic, though they had been around for a while under several other names on several different labels. In a landscape of boy bands, pre-teen chanteuses, and nu metal, the literate, '60s-influenced jangle of the Shins' debut seems a bizarre anomaly. ...

Riow Arai Mind Edit Vinyl LP  (2000) (Import) United Kingdom

Trip To Marineville
Vinyl Record $18.25
Originally released in Japan in 1999, Tokyo producer Riow Arai's Mind Edit is a beautiful work of bold and sometimes pastoral instrumental hip-hop that fits well with artists like Nobody, Manitoba, and Prefuse 73. "Cut-up" seems to be the defining feature, as these tracks come across almost like audio collages and, in fact, there are scissors pictured on the cover. "Undulation" does just what the title says, with shimmering and atmospheric gamelan-sounding bells flip-flopping back and forth across the heavily panned mix. But where Manitoba might stretch his compositions into hazy, melting psychedelic pieces or Prefuse 73 might create a densely layered web, Riow Arai's editing is reminiscent of vintage electronica like Aphex Twin's Classics (albeit with beats provided by the RZA). Not that the albums on a whole bear much resemblance to each other at all, but their construction does. In both cases, the sounds themselves take on the distinct quality ...
