Boogie Playground album
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef Jean -- is giddily addicting, a celebration of all the strange sensuality that comes out at night. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Luther Vandross This Is Christmas CD (1995)
Boogie Playground CD music
$6.55 This stellar 1995 Christmas album is not your typical release of holiday standards. In fact, Luther helped pen most of the songs on this album. His originals include the excellent "With a Christmas Heart," "This Is Christmas," and "A Kiss for Christmas." But for those with an allegiance to the standards, "My Favorite Things" and "O' Come All Ye Faithful" are duly included among these 10 lovely tracks. Well-known bassist/arranger/producer Marcus Miller plays on some of the tracks, while well-coifed '80s rock balladeer Richard Marx co-wrote "Every Year, Every Christmas." For R&B fans, it's hard to do much better than THIS IS CHRISTMAS.
Recorded at The Hit Factory Studios, Power Station and Clinton Recording Studios, New York; Camel Island, Los Angeles, California.
Engineers include: Ray Bardani, Stanley Wallace, Paul Brown.
Personnel: Luther Vandross (vocals); Darlene Love (vocals); ...

| | Michael Jackson Dangerous CD (1991) Remastered; Special Edition
Boogie Playground songs
$7.59 Principally recorded at Record One Studios & Larrabee Studios, Los Angeles, California. Originally released on Epic/Sony (45400).
Digitally remastered by Bernie Grundman (Bernie Grundman Mastering, Los Angeles, California).
After a lengthy gap of nearly five years, Jackson had to pull something out of the bag. BAD was, after all, a difficult act to follow, and the press were trying to prove he was bonkers. This was a pretty decent attempt and fell in with the hard dance beat of the early 90s. "Heal The World" was much like the old melodic Jackson, and it became a major hit. "Black Or White" was the best of the rest, a well-constructed song in which he attempted to repeat "Ebony And Ivory" in the context of 90s dance music.
Despite the success of Bad, it was hard not to view it as a bit of a letdown, since it presented a cleaner, colder, calculated version of Thriller -- something that delivered what it should on the surface, but wound up offering less in the long run. So, it was time for a change-up, something even a superstar as huge as Michael Jackson realized, so he left Quincy

| | Mercury Program From The Vapor Of Gasoline Vinyl LP (2000)
Boogie Playground music CDs
$10.29 They rock, they roar, they tiptoe on little magic elfen feet, and then they roar some more. They're probably the closest thing to honest-to-god jazz-rock since Corea and DiMeola returned to forever. And while the Mercury Program are technically not an instrumental group, the vocals are so infrequent and subdued that you're likely to miss them unless you're paying close attention.
When they're roarin', the guitar is all fuzzy 'n' in your face, while the drummer is heroically pummeling the living daylights out of his kit. When they whisper, the atmosphere is thick with vibraphones and bells, not unlike the Dylan Group. Angular ...
| | Johnny Cash Live At Town Hall Party 1958 Vinyl LP (2003)
Boogie Playground songs
$16.95 Recorded at the Town Hall Party television show in Los Angeles on November 15, 1958, this was Cash's first show following his move to Los Angeles, though that transplant didn't stick. He and the Tennessee Two (Luther Perkins on guitar and Marshall Grant on bass) go through several of their early hits on this 11-song set, including "I Walk the Line," "The Ways of a Woman in Love," and "Don't Take Your Guns to Town," the last of which was a few months away from entering the Top Forty. Also on hand were a few less-traveled items, including songs that made nods to his gospel roots ("It Was Jesus"), and folk influences ("Frankie's Man Johnny"). Although these are good performances, and any live 1950s Johnny Cash counts as historically important to preserve, there are a couple of considerations which keep this from being as valuable a piece of music as it could ...
