You Are The One
$14.75 It would be silly to pretend that an album like MOLINA & JOHNSON was created in a vacuum, when the principals -- Jason Molina and Will Johnson -- each have such a rich history behind them. The two singer/songwriters are best known for Magnolia Electric Co. and Centro-Matic, respectively, but it's their other, more explicitly rootsy/acoustic projects, Johnson's indie folk alter ego South San Gabriel and Molina's Songs: Ohia, that are more relevant to the pair's collaborative outing. For the most part, MOLINA & JOHNSON is even more stripped-down than the latter two bands. Things start off at a deceptively brisk clip -- at least brisk for this album -- with "Twenty Cycles to the Ground," the fullest-sounding track here, featuring lambent electric guitar licks, atmospheric organ lines, and an actual drum kit. Neither drums nor anything even approaching midtempo appear again on this album dominated by spare, slow-and-low ballads. That's not a pejorative observation, though -- sparse settings and an unhurried pace are exactly what these tunes require to put their point across. One of the most interesting things about the results of this partnership is the way these two alt-Americana troubadours, who generally seem to have so much in common, start to ...
| | Metallica Ride The Lightning Vinyl LP (1984)
You Are The One
$15.39 Metallica turned the metal world on its ear with their debut album, KILL 'EM ALL and then blew its mind with the follow-up, RIDE THE LIGHTNING. The riffs and arrangements are more intricate, the lyrics are more intelligent and biting and James Hetfield's growl is meaner. The set starts out with two tunes that would have been right at home on KILL 'EM ALL, but the next two are slower and more involved. "Ride The Lightning" is a slow (by Metallica's standards) dirge about the futility of war. "Fade To Black" is a ballad (!) that builds to an instrumental coda featuring the ...
| | Velvet Underground & Nico Vinyl LP (1969) Deluxe Edition
You Are The One
$16.19 Velvet Underground's self-titled third album seemed like the debut of a new band. John Cale had left (replaced by Doug Yule) and the group became, for all intents and purposes, Lou Reed's back-up band. The songs actually sounded like rock music and John Cale's screeching musicality was reworked into songs that featured Sterling Morrison's most eloquent guitar accompaniment.
Reed's songwriting moved beyond the armed-to-disarm approach of the previous two albums towards a spiritual level of empathy with the human race--a change that wouldn't go unnoticed. The man who once begged someone to "nullify [his] life" ("Heroin") was now asking "Jesus" to "help me find my proper place," and whooping his way through the equally inspiring "Beginning To See The Light." To this day, every song on VELVET UNDERGROUND sounds like a breakthrough.
In short, VELVET UNDERGROUND showcased the human side of Lou Reed's songwriting. Unobstructed by walls of sonic noise, Reed's insight and genius was finally allowed to shine through.
Brian Eno once said that only a hundred people bought Velvet Underground records when they first came out, but those hundred people all went out and formed their own bands. The rest, of course, is history; the Velvet Underground was the catalyst that helped spark punk rock, and began the growth of an alternative branch ...

| | R E M R.E.M. Live Vinyl LP (2007) Bonus DVD
You Are The One
$41.29 The good news, though, is that while the set focuses almost exclusively on the band's major-label years and features many tracks from their three albums as a trio (UP, REVEAL, and AROUND THE SUN), it still smokes. Peter Buck's mesmerizing arpeggios set aflame opener "I Took Your Name" from MONSTER and the fan fave "Orange Crush" from GREEN, while Michael Stipe's undeniable pipes captivate on UP's gospel-tinged "Walk Unafraid" and the protest song "Final Straw" from AROUND THE SUN. Twice the band dips into I.R.S. territory on a tremolo-soaked "Cuyahoga" and a revved-up "Don't Go Back to Rockville," in which bassist Mike Mills gets his star turn on lead vocals.
The collection also includes a DVD of the entire show, which reveals that although the band was never groomed for stadiums like their '80s counterparts U2, they could still whip a crowd into a frenzy and devastate live--even with a hired gun on the drums.
A document of a single concert performed in the post-Bill Berry year of 2006.
While the title alone is enough to make any longtime fan salivate--given that this is the first official live release in the Athens band's formidable catalog--a serious caveat applies. ...

$36.05 "Down In The Flood" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
The soundtrack to the 2003 film starring and co-written by Bob Dylan obviously centers around the legendary songwriter's compositions, but with a twist. The bulk of the selections here are Dylan tunes performed by other artists, some being international performers who've translated the lyrics into their native tongues. To hear a Japanese version of "My Back Pages" by the Magokoro Brothers, or an Italian-language take on the ...
