Had Andrew Whiteman never attempted to play the Cuban guitar, let alone stay eight weeks on an island in the Caribbean Sea, Apostle of Hustle might not have come to be. Apostle of Hustle allowed him to expand his indie rock palate into a nocturnal sphere of Latin music and post rock/experimental threads for what is the mind-bending soundscape of Folkloric Feel. It's complimentary to the various Broken Social Scene offshoots -- Valley of the Giants and Stars -- but also a connection of sorts to Whiteman's personal background and interests. The album's title track highlights the overall cinematic backdrop from the start; sweeping percussion arrangements from Dean Stone and Julian Brown's treading upright bass delivery carries Whiteman's achingly beautiful sentiments of love, truth, and wonder. Select members from the Arts & Crafts recording family -- Brendan Canning, Evan Cranley, Feist, Kevin Drew, Amy Milan, Dave Newfeld, and Lucy Bain -- add to the mesmerizing dynamic of Folkloric Feel. From Newfeld's streamlined production to Drew's chilled piano sounds to Feist's charming harmonies on "King & Queens" and "Animal Fat," Folkloric Feel is a love fantasy. Hushing acoustic guitars creep along to the electric riffs of "Sleepwalking Ballad" for an eerie, yet radiant Jeff Buckley-like moment. "Baby, You're in Luck," which borrows from Toronto singer/songwriter Alex Lukashevsky's "Tammy Twococks," frolics with sparse Latin shades and Milan's icy vocals for the album's darkest, heartbreaking narrative. Apostle of Hustle offers an abstract, poetic design and fluid emotional illustrations a plenty on this album. Whiteman's personal honesty and seriousness for fleshing out what's in his head (and his heart) is what makes Folkloric Feel a stunning 2004 release. Apostle of Hustle is Whiteman's chance to be a storyteller and Folkloric Feel is his fairy tale. ~ MacKenzie WilsonCMJ (p.38) - "With FOLKLORIC FEEL, Whiteman has shown how integral he is to his other band's sound, while creating a pleasant detour from it."

There was a time when British Steel was the hottest, hardest, and most awesome substance on the planet. On Judas Priest "Concert Classics", here it is, in its most appropriate circumstances: live, on stage. Judas Priest re-invented heavy metal. The first band to use the twin-guitar attack, they built on the foundation Black Sabbath had laid and moved metal to a new level. ...

Continuing his stroll through pop's backpages, Rod Stewart moves on from "The Great Rock Classics of Our Time" and dives into the SOULBOOK, shorthand for all the great Motown and soul songs that still are in heavy rotation on oldies radio well into the new millennium. Rod doesn't spend much time with the soul and blues singers so influential on him, choosing instead ...

Timothy B Schmit launched his solo career late - in 1984, after the Eagles disbanded and right in the thick of the era of shiny, synthesized production. Schmit released three solo albums, all big and glossy, between 1984 and 1991, then reunited with the Eagles in '94, so he never quite had a chance to record an album ...

Shakira She Wolf CD  (2009)

Folkloric Feel CD music
CD $14.39  SALE 2.8 stars Top 100
Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronic concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira.. sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. The title track "She-Wolf " boasts the infectious and energizing sound that made Shakira a household name, with a slightly more dancey/ electronic beat (about 125 beats per minute). Though most tracks on the upcoming album will be in English, Shakira chose to service the Spanish version of the first single, "Loba", two weeks before the English single is launched. Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, ...
Electric President
Electric President Vinyl LP  (2006) Digipak

Folkloric Feel music CDs
Vinyl Record $15.89
Never shy to throw instruments, samples, and various electronic blips and bleeps to see what sticks to the wall, Electric President open with the hushed vocals on the dreamy and heady "Good Morning, Hypocrite," which is a cross of Moby and Primitive Radio Gods. The duo obviously isn't afraid of using its pop harmonies during the chorus with fabulous results that have you singing along with a childlike innocent. This continues with the precious "Insomnia," which contains a more pronounced roots flavor with a hint of a lush orchestrated arrangement in the background. The group rarely rests on its laurels, with a distant electric guitar marking the opening of the heavier but groove-riddled "Ten Thousand Lives," which has a few shifts musically, soaring before resorting to more "bah dum bah" harmonies. "Grand Machine No. 12," however, is a rather mediocre song that never truly finds its way, just ambling along with the harmonies recalling the lead singer from Wheatus. "Hum" is more direct yet just comes a tad over two minutes with some backward loops in the intro. As the album goes on, this vocal style can be sometimes trying and tedious. The first real head-scratching track has to be "Snow on Dead Neighborhoods," which has a great intro but then resorts to a safer, whispered pop style à la Billy Corgan circa "Disarmed" ...

Folkloric Feel songs

The 8 songs on this cassette-only EP are available on CD on the PLASTIC SURGERY DISASTERS album. The band didn't hold back at all when it came to the follow-up for Fresh Fruit -- if anything, they exploded to a degree never matched by them in later years. Arguably the sheer speed and lack of any subtlety throughout most of this eight-song EP means there's less to talk about in terms of deathless songs and more in the way of sheer breathless anger and rage. The titles say it all: "Nazi Punks Fuck Off," "Religious Vomit," "Hyperactive Child." The sheer hilarity of the band isn't lost, ...

Brian Wilson That Lucky Old Sun Vinyl LP  (2008)

Folkloric Feel album
Vinyl Record $27.85
Seldom has an album had as much to live up to as THAT LUCKY OLD SUN. When Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks wrote the iconic song suite SMILE some four decades earlier, they created the definitive art-pop statement, inspiring countless imitators for years to come. It's a gutsy move for Wilson to create a new album-length suite in 2008 in collaboration with Parks and bandmate Scott Bennett, a work that will unavoidably be compared to the unmatchable SMILE. LUCKY OLD SUN isn't SMILE's sequel; rather, it's an extended meditation on the pop myth Wilson and the other Beach Boys created in the '60s--L.A. as eternal summer-land, a surf-sand-and-hot-rod-heaven. Naturally, the music references the Beach Boys' classics, teeming with rich, close vocal harmonies, lilting, piano-driven song structures, and sunny, sophisticated melodic lines that will send a chill up the spine of anyone who's ever absorbed the sunshine-pop majesty of PET SOUNDS. Sure, Wilson's voice is a bit worn with age, but there's no attempt to duplicate the epic sweep of SMILE. THAT LUCKY OLD SUN succeeds on its own terms. That Lucky Old Sun is an album by Brian Wilson released in 2008 through Capitol Records. Originally commissioned by the Southbank Centre for its 2007 opening season, the work was debuted in a series of concerts at the Royal Festival Hall in London, England during September 2007. In January 2008 it was also performed at the State Theatre in Sydney, Australia for the Sydney Festival. ...
