Internal Punishment Programs is an appropriate title for this CD by Norway's Red Harvest, whose combination of metal and industrial rock is, in fact, quite punishing. Red Harvest aren't as well known as other bands that specialize in metal/industrial fusion; they haven't received as much attention as Godflesh or Ministry -- at least not in the United States, where their albums were only available as imports until the early 2000s. But Red Harvest is well-worth getting to know if one appreciates the musical equivalent of a sledgehammer, and the Norwegians are showing no signs of softening their blows on Internal Punishment Programs. Quite the contrary; they continue to go for the jugular on this album, which unites death metal's crushing guitars and deep, guttural growl with industrial's noisy electronics. Parts of this album favor darkly moody atmospherics, but most of the time, Red Harvest is just plain brutal -- and a lot of that harshness has to do with the band's effective use of density. In metal as well as avant-garde jazz, density has a way of really increasing the severity factor; density is the thing that makes Slayer more punishing than Judas Priest and post-1965 John Coltrane much heavier than Anthony Braxton or Roscoe Mitchell. And when Red Harvest goes for maximum density on Internal Punishment Programs, the results are quite nasty -- these Nordic agitators can be incredibly ferocious and claustrophobic. Red Harvest takes metal to a sadistic extreme, and industrial rock is an effective tool in their arsenal. Bands as harsh as Red Harvest are definitely an acquired taste, but those who do have a taste for this type of metal/industrial ferocity will find a lot to admire about Internal Punishment Programs. ~ Alex Henderson

Norwegian industrial metal pioneers release their 2004 album on an ultra cool red colored 2 vinyl set. Back On Black.

Toby Keith American Ride CD  (2009)

Internal Punishment Programs album
CD $13.09  3.5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the sly "If I Had One," and the heavy blues stomp "Loaded" -- but spends more time on the softer side, even when he kicks up a bit of dust on the dancefloor on "You Can't Read My Mind" or does a funny, respectful salute to military life on "Ballad of Balad." In other words, the real touchstone for the rest of the record is "Tender as I Wanna Be," where he lets his guard down and lets the romance flow. This doesn't turn ...

It's hard to not be impressed by the sheer sonic onslaught that is otherwise known as Nile. Except to the most hardened death metal fanatic, the genre has a way of sounding the same after a while, but Nile is one of the few exceptions -- able to put their own unmistakable fingerprints on this heavy duty style (Egyptian-influenced lyrics and musical bits, highly impressive instrumental dexterity, etc.). And on their sixth studio effort overall, 2009's Those Whom the Gods Detest, Nile has once again proven that they are a step ahead of the rest of the pack. Although some of the sonic depth has ...

Picking up where 2004's Never Breathe What You Can't See left off, Jello and the boys return with the same formulas and dynamics found on the aforementioned album, and they are still doing it better than most people half their age. Kicking things off with the Alice Cooper classic "Halo of Flies," things are still as humid and dirty as ever with the Melvins, ...

Sean Na Na Dance 'Til Your Baby Is A Man Vinyl LP  (2000)

Internal Punishment Programs music CDs
Vinyl Record $9.55
Habitually self-referential and vitriolic, Sean Tillman is hell-bent on informing all of the bullies, haters, and girlfriends from his past that he wishes them nothing but ill will, and has left them in the proverbial dust. As if such flaunted malice isn't foreign enough to the usually placid genre of indie pop (though the contradictory overtones of insecurity may well be), add to it the fact that Tillman is a former member of an AmRep noise rock band and a classically trained singer. He was blessed with an expressive tenor that he uses, much like many a tweaked-out R&B singer does, to flagellate his songs with vocal histrionics. His lyrics are witty, occasionally funny, and sometimes silly, but they're usually pointed and confrontational. The combination of his voice and odd lyrics makes it virtually impossible to feel sorry for him, though one begins to wonder how mercilessly Tillman was picked on to have harbored such resentment for a prolonged period of time. However alienated or betrayed he may feel, Dance 'Til Your Baby Is a Man benefits from his hostility. While there are a few slow jams and pop nuggets scattered across the ...

One of America's most important, but most frequently overlooked, punk rock bands, Mission Of Burma released only a handful of records before it disbanded. 1981's SIGNALS, CALLS, AND MARCHES was its debut EP following a seven-inch single, both tracks from which are included on this Ryko CD reissue. "That's When I Reach for My Revolver," built on Peter Prescott's ...
