Who's that pissing on your leg? Oh, it's Denton, TX. First, the town splattered listeners with the Riverboat Gamblers, particularly their raucous Gearhead Records debut. But in 2004 it's the Marked Men, who after an eponymous effort for Rip Off have leaped to Dirt Nap and dropped On the Outside. It's not the white lightning body ache of the Gamblers (whose shouter Mike Weibe guests here) -- unlike those crazies, you can actually understand what vocalists/guitarists Jeff Burke and Mark Ryan (ex-Reds) are saying. But Outside is rollickingly revivalist in its own right, pulsing on a tensile crossbreed of the Ramones and Undertones, like longhaired guys in leather dressing up as the Jam. "On the Outside," "Don't Lose It," and "Broken Record" all pop with interlocking vocal hooks over frantically wiry guitars -- there are no slow jams here, but then a crowded dancefloor doing the frug is no place for slow pokes, anyway. "No Time" is the Marked Men's official Ramones entry, while "Right Here With You" manages to be melodic and stinging at the same time. Outside ends strong -- clocking in under 30 minutes -- with a trio of songs as strong as the opening, "Cool Devices," "4,000 Times" (check those backing vocals!), and "Master Wicked." It's a strong entry into the thriving garage punk demolition derby, where the Marked Men join types like the Fleshies and Briefs, gassed up with drunken shoutalong potential and bashing their big land yachts into music with no brakes. ~ Johnny Loftus Marked Men On The Outside Songs | 1. | On the Outside |

After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck "Must Be Santa," which barrelhouses like a barroom, Dylan doesn't really reinterpret these songs as much as simply play them with his crackerjack road band, dropping in a little flair -- restoring "we'll have to muddle through somehow" to "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," singing the opening of "O Come All Ye Faithful" in its original Latin -- but never pushing tunes in unexpected directions. Still enamored of the concept of the concept album more than four years after AMERICAN IDIOT, Green Day unveiled its rock-opera sequel, 21ST CENTURY BREAKDOWN, in 2009. Like its predecessor, BREAKDOWN wholeheartedly embraces the iconic punk-pop act's shift to a stadium-filling sound, while also remaining loyal to the San Francisco-based trio's progressive sociopolitical outlook. Years have passed since the South rose again, albeit briefly, via Raging Slab's memorable Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert. A powerhouse of an album that was unfairly ignored by all but the most open-minded listeners of the early '90s, it was followed by the total creative cop-out that was 1996's Sing Monkey Sing -- a clunker of such mind-boggling proportions that one could only assume the Slab had run its course. And sure enough, in the years that followed, the group's creative core of husband/wife team Greg Strezmpka and Elyse Steinman sank back into the Pennsylvania mud, seemingly for good. Yet, hope springs eternal in the new millennium and so, five years on, comes forth a new Raging Slab album in the shape of 2001's The Dealer. Not quite a return to form, this instead is a rather brooding, workmanlike record containing a whopping 16 tracks (they did have plenty of time to write them, after all). The problem is that almost none of them show any signs of the pep and sense of humor that Raging Slab once wore proudly on its tasseled sleeves, and which, lest listeners forget, is as important an element of Southern rock as anything darker and morose. Could there ever have been a "Free Bird" or "Whipping Post" without the tongue-in-cheek fun of "Sweet Home Alabama" or "Flirtin' With Disaster"? During their few years together in the late '90s and early 2000s, Antipop Consortium blazed a trail for forward-thinking rap. The trio of Beans, High Priest, and M. Sayyid (plus the critical help of longtime engineer Earl Blaize) rapped plenty of abstract scientifical madness, but they also had intelligence and hardcore flow to spare (think A Tribe Called Quest plus Marvel Comics).
