| | Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 (1963 - 1972) CDs (2009) 1963-1972; Box Set
Albion CD music
$84.75 This eight-CD box set, with about one-third previously unreleased material, sparks the beginning of a promising series of Neil Young ARCHIVES, and serves as a document of the heady exploration and growth that the beloved artist undertook between the innocent early 1960s and the explosive early '70s. The first CD preserves some early solo demos and his work with his teenage band the Squires, a Duane Eddy-ish enterprise that made the best of Young's nascent signature guitar style--simple, effective, dramatic. The second disc covers the Buffalo Springfield years, and includes two versions of the delicious "Flying on the Ground is Wrong."
The rest is prime Young, from DEJA VU through HARVEST, with and without Crosby, Stills, and/or Nash, Stray Gators, and Crazy Horse. Album tracks mingle with previously unreleased mixes, demo versions, and sizzling live tracks, and the final disc contains the 1974 film JOURNEY THROUGH THE PAST replete with the original film trailer and other extras. Needless to say this is the most complete Neil Young collection currently available, ...

| | Pains of Being Pure At Heart T Higher Than The Stars CD (2009) Extended Play
Albion songs
$6.69 Instead of following up their well-received self-titled album with an EP full of the same kind of neo-shoegaze noise pop, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart do a little creative stretching on the HIGHER THAN THE STARS EP. The title track is a happy pop tune with the layers of fuzzy six-strings replaced by shimmering synths. It's more Field Mice than My Bloody Valentine and it works very well. The band didn't really need to prove that there were lovely songs beneath all the noise but they truly have with the kind of song that will be a 2009 mixtape staple among lovers of great pop songs, indie or otherwise. Overall, this EP marks a vital point in POBPAH's artistic development, a chance to see that they aren't willing to just sit back and repeat themselves.

| | Johnny Frigo Collected Works Vinyl LP (2002)
Albion music CDs
$18.39 COLLECTED WORKS comprises recordings Johnny Frigo made for Gus Giordano's Chicago jazz dance studio in the 70's.
(trumpet); Dick Marx (piano, organ); Ron Steele (guitar); Rick Frigo (drums);
Includes liner notes by Gus Giordano, Chris Veltri and Eothen Alapatt.
Fans who buy this Johnny Frigo CD expecting to hear some hot swing violin will be surprised. Frigo spent most of his career (until the mid-'80s) as a studio bassist in Chicago who played jazz now and then. In the early '70s, a dance teacher persuaded Frigo to record some danceable jazz for his students to learn by. The result was 14 groove tunes that are an R&B-ish and funky brand of jazz. Frigo is on bass throughout, keeping the rhythms going for a septet of local musicians that includes his son, Rick Frigo, on drums and pianist/organist Dick Marx. Along with some funky originals are such unexpected tunes as Buddy Miles' "Do Whatever Sets You Free," Isaac Hayes' "Walk From Regios," and a lengthy version of "Them Changes." The music is enjoyable enough; just do not expect it to be swing standards. ~ Scott Yanow
Bobby Christian (percussion).

| | Place To Bury Strangers Vinyl LP (2007)
Albion songs
$15.99 From the opening blast of overdriven guitars and hyperkinetic drums it's apparent A Place to Bury Strangers, self-described "loudest band in New York," want to pummel you into submission with their unique take on white noise-derived guitar splendor, but then a hypnotic single-string riff takes over to briefly deliver a respite from the assault, recalling the classic era of shoegaze. The swirling atmosphere of guitar feedback and reverb-drenched vocals immediately bring to mind the most obvious comparison: vintage Jesus and Mary Chain. And while the Mary Chain circa Psychocandy evoked the Beach Boys on bad acid or the the Shirelles gigging poolside at the Manson family compound, A Place to Bury Strangers also evoke a host of noisy early-'90s British bands like My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, Ride, Chapterhouse, Pale Saints, and the Catherine Wheel without sounding exactly like any of them. These bands knew how to cloak their essentially straightforward and anthemic rock songs in layers upon layers of guitar effects to lend an air of psychedelia and psychosis to what without that noisy dressing would strip down to candy-coated pop confections. And what A Place to Bury Strangers indeed do is write pop songs, with simple, traditional arrangements, primarily in slightly menacing minor keys, and saturated with their own unique brand of sonic mayhem. This is facilitated by the fact that their guitarist/singer designs his own effects pedals at his day job, allowing for a trademark-able and wide variety of signature bombastic sounds (he also does custom work for illustrious members of other similarly minded space rockers). Many songs, like the obvious single "To Fix the Gash in Your Head," feature a pile-driving drum machine enhancement which adds to the multiple layers and recalls a time when dark dream pop (Curve, Slowdive, the Telescopes) and dancefloor-friendly goth rock (Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, early New Order) were club mainstays. And aside from the lone doom-laden ballad "The Falling Sun," these songs are actually danceable. Or perhaps moshable, at the proper volume. The majority of the album keeps up the frenetic onslaught with which it opens, and even amongst the caustic thrash and thick slabs of sonic detritus there is an exhilaration, a catharsis, a beauty in the cacophony, and the listener is happily buried in the ear-splitting bliss. Many albums' ...
