NIGHT IN TUNISIA is a 1960 release from American jazz drummer and bandleader Art Blakey and his Quintet.
This edition has been remastered and pressed onto 180-gram vinyl.
This excellent CD reissue has one of the best recordings by the second version of the Jazz Messengers, and it is the only time that Blakey featured both altoist Jackie McLean and tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin together; Griffin would soon be McLean's successor with the band. Also in the group at the time were trumpeter Bill Hardman, pianist Sam Dockery, and bassist Spanky DeBrest. The reissue has the original five selections: a lengthy version of "A Night in Tunisia," Sonny Rollins' "Evans," and an original apiece by McLean, Griffin, and Hardman. Three of the songs (including "A Night in Tunisia") are also heard in previously unreleased alternate takes. The music overall lives up to one's expectations, with Blakey's powerful drumming inspiring the soloists to play at their best. Classic hard bop. ~ Scott Yanow

A Bay Area supergroup that brings together members of Blackalicous (Gift of Gab), Latyrx (Lateef the Truth Speaker), and Crown City Rockers (Headnodic), the Mighty Underdogs present their debut LP, DROPPIN' SCIENCE FICTION, on Definitive Jux. With an unconventional approach to traditional boom-bap, the Mighty Underdogs marry intelligently intricate rhyme schemes with consistently inventive beatwork-- courtesy of Headnodic and guest producers DJ Shadow and MF Doom. DROPPIN' SCIENCE FICTION is another well-rounded Def Jux effort that bucks industry trends, flagrantly going against the grain. As Lateef nonchalantly explains on the feel-good track "Hands in the Air," "We not keepin' it real `cause we droppin' science fiction!"
A hip-hop trio (two MCs and one producer), the Mighty Underdogs sound so laid-back and bemused and confident on their debut LP that even those who didn't recognize the names involved might guess that these are not people going about their day jobs. Lateef and Gift of Gab are, of course, two of the brightest rappers to emerge between the death of alternative rap and the birth of the underground, and their thirst for innovative side projects appears to be nowhere near slaked. Their producer here, Headnodic, is less of a major figure, but that just means he has more to prove. His tracks on Droppin' Science Fiction mark him as a producer to watch -- although he's actually been around for quite a while -- calling on everything from old-school rap to lowrider digitalia to hard rock in order to power these tracks (all of which are either hip-hop or deep groove). The follow-up to Gym Class Heroes' breakthrough album, AS CRUEL AS SCHOOL CHILDREN, 2008's THE QUILT furthers the upstate New York ensemble's rap-rock sound. Not surprisingly, Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump, a frequent band associate, has his hand in the proceedings, producing half of the album, while hip-hop gurus Cool & Dre helm many of the other tracks. Highlights of the energetic outing include the playful "Cookie Jar" (featuring The-Dream) and the romantic "Live Forever (Fly With Me)," which makes great use of guest Daryl Hall's falsetto vocals.
The Quilt is as good a name as any for Gym Class Heroes' post-hip-hop pop collage, as they weave together discarded strands of junk culture into something new yet naggingly familiar.
