(4 Customer Reviews)
If you can forgive an aging Kip Winger for singing the praises of jailbait in "Seventeen," then Winger Live is a harmless, nostalgic trip through the glamour and glitz of '80s hair metal. The band's entire founding lineup is present -- a rare feat for any 20-year-old act, but one that's especially impressive given this genre's high turnover rate in the 21st century. Kip's pipes and poster-boy good looks have withered a bit with age, and many (if not all) of the songs have been modified, their original keys lowered in accordance with the singer's dwindling range. Still, Winger blows through this two-disc set with convincing energy, playing all the predictable hits ("Heading for a Heartbreak," "Seventeen," "Miles Away") while falling prey to the typical (but excusable, since it's all in good fun) trappings of an '80s rock band. That is, they devote entire tracks to solos by guitarist Reb Beach and drummer Rod Morgenstein, and there's a great deal of "Come on!" and "Help me out! Sing it!" yelled by the enthusiastic bandmates. Most of the highlights are sandwiched onto the second disc, which features the band's encore section as well as a solid version of the forgotten "Who's the One." For the most part, Winger Live is strictly a "fans only" release, but that won't keep it from evoking a bit of guilty nostalgia in others. ~ Andrew Leahey
Winger: John Roth, Reb Beach (vocals, guitar); Kip Winger (vocals, bass guitar); Rod Morgenstein (vocals, drums).
Live Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Winger Live Review Playing all of thier big hits and a few new ones too, very talented musicians, better live than thier studio work. Too bad bands can't come up with more Live material. Submitted by dibbit1 (Rochester, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Surprise! I got this as a freebie in a radio contest, and frankly wasn't expecting much from it. I liked this band back in the day, and still think they get a bad rap, but the prospect of a double-live Winger CD just didn't fire me up that much. So it came as a pleasant surprise when I actually listened to this thing. The sound is very raw, and doesn't really sound like much has been done int he way of "producing" it at all. But even so, it's pretty enjoyable. Reb Beach, of course, shreds all over the place, as does this John Roth guy, who apparently is the keyboard player and second guitarist, depending on the song. The songs are given extra heaviness, especially the ones from the band's second album (a third of the songs here). The tunes from '93's Pull are the highlights, though, but even the ones from last year's Winger IV are pretty good. All in all, I was pretty impressed. | | Whitesnake Good To Be Bad CD (2008) Without Bonus CD
Live album
$14.69 Initial pressings of GOOD TO BE BAD included a bonus disc containing 7 live tracks and a video.
Issued more than a decade after Whitesnake's previous studio outing, 2008's GOOD TO BE BAD finds frontman David Coverdale leading a band of new hard-rock recruits. Easily one of the heaviest albums recorded by the blooze-leaning British act, the album benefits from Coverdale's well-weathered vocals and the twin guitar work of Doug Aldrich (Dio) and Reb Beach (Winger, Dokken), as evinced on the fierce opener, "Best Years."

| | Rory Gallagher Calling Card CD (1976) Germany
Live music CDs
$9.39 Gallagher's second album for Chrysalis -- and last with his longstanding trio of Lou Martin (keyboards), Rod De'Ath (drums) and Gerry McAvoy (bass) -- was a milestone in his career. Although Calling Card was produced by Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover and not surprisingly contained some of his most powerfully driving rockers, tracks like the acoustic "Barley & Grape Rag" and the jazzy, soulful, finger snapping title cut -- a perennial concert favorite -- found the Irish rocker not only exploring other musical paths, but also caught him on one of his most consistent songwriting streaks ever. Even "Do You Read Me," the muscular opening track, is a remarkably stripped-down affair that adds subtle synths to the rugged blues rock that was Gallagher's claim to fame. While "Moonchild," "Country Mile," and "Secret Agent" displayed catchy hooks, engaging riffs, and raging guitar work (the latter adds a touch of Deep Purple's Jon Lord-styled organ to the proceedings), it's the elegant ballad "I'll Admit You're Gone" that shifts the guitarist into calmer waters and proves his melodic talent was just as cutting on quieter tunes. And it's a crime that the gorgeous "Edged in Blue," certainly one of the artist's saddest and most beautiful pop melodies, was overlooked in his catalog. The 1999 reissue sports track-by-track and first person liner notes from Gallagher's brother Donal, crisp remastered sound, and two additional songs not included on previous versions, one of which, "Public Enemy (B-Girl Version)," later appeared on the Photo-Finish album in an inferior performance to this. Arguably Rory Gallagher's finest studio effort, it was among his best and most varied batch of songs, and it is a perfect place for the curious to start their collection as well as an essential disc showing Gallagher at the peak of his powers. ~ Hal Horowitz

| | W D Dailey Wild Bill's Blues CD (2008)
Live songs
$15.19 WILD BILL\'S BLUESI was reluctant to name this CD \"WILD BILL\'S BLUES\" but back in my Woodstock days I rode a motorcycle with a pet raccoon on my shoulder and got the name \"Wild Bill\". Fortyyears have gone by since then and my life has went through big changes since those days but a few months ago I stopped to see if a friend might need my help that had been pulled over by the police. The policeman let my friend go but arrested me for obstructing an officer. Later I noticed on the police report-under aliases- that the officer had written \"Wild Bill\".My first CD was in 2004 and I have done well with it. I had lots of radio play, found my music on juke boxes, played in blues festivals and sold lots of CD\'s.I have tried to do a variety of more acoustic blues on this new CD with 4 Robert Johnson songs. A couple of songs on my old national steel guitar including Blind Boy fuller\'s,\"Step It Up and Go\" and a song with a harmonica in a holder around my neck, \"Make Sure My Grave is Kept Clean\". I have also included 4 of my original songs.I have always loved these old acoustic blues and had an opportunity to visit Mississippi with one of my son\'s this spring. We spent a week in the delta visiting grave sites, blues museums and spending our evenings in the famous juke joints. Please check out our website of the trip at......www.AKZstudios.com. Hope you enjoy this new CD! W.D. Dailey
