| | Tiger Army Early Years EP Vinyl LP Record Tiger Army Discography of CDs
THE EARLY YEARS features 6 unreleased and out-of-print tracks from Tiger Army's first recording sessions from 1996 and 1997.
Principally recorded at Grizzly Studios, Petaluma, California between 1996 & 1997.
Culled from Tiger Army's back catalog of unreleased songs and early demo outtakes (predating the band's affiliation with Hellcat Records), The Early Years is a reissue aimed at satisfying fans of the band seeking to complete their collections, rather than aimed at attracting new fans to the fold. The songs contained on Early Years are all serviceable rockabilly/punkabilly numbers, but they lack any real power or direction and are pretty forgettable as a result. Tiger Army's anthemic "Jungle Cat" is full of lines like, "Don't step on my tiger tail/I'll rip your guts out" and rallying cries of "let's prowl," and, not surprisingly, it comes across as being more than a little cheesy. The band often bears more than just a passing resemblance to the Stray Cats (musically), but the difference between the two groups is that the Stray Cats were the whole package. Sure, the Cats had their own silly kitty anthem ("Stray Cat Strut"), but Brian Setzer and the boys had the attitude and the chops to back it up. "American Nightmare" finds the band giving that Misfits track the rockabilly treatment, while "F.T.W." (which stands for "f*ck the world," yawn) has Tiger Army posturing as tough-as-nails street punks rather than swaggering rockabilly hepsters. With ham-fisted lyrics like, "Everyday this sh*t brings me down/Every night I wanna go out and kill," "F.T.W." is the oldest song on Early Years, dating back to 1996. Perhaps Tiger Army's schtick would be a little easier to swallow if they would settle on what it is they're trying to accomplish -- that is to say, they need to decide whether they are the goofy greasers of "Jungle Cat" or the angry, juvenile punks of "F.T.W.," because the two sides of the band's personality are definitely at odds with one another. As a rarities compilation, the unevenness of this record is quite understandable, and it serves as a testament to how much the band has improved over the years, rather than how good it was when it was just starting out. A bit like the "before" photo of a makeover. ~ Karen E. Graves

Purchase Early Years EP CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
Early Years EP album
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something ...
| | Tom Petty Live Anthology CDs (2009)
Early Years EP CD music
$19.34 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest incarnation, Live Anthology is a super-affordable, four-disc box set running 48 tracks, which is eight cuts longer than Springsteen's box, plenty long enough for most fans, but in ...
| | Leona Lewis Echo CD (2009)
Early Years EP music CDs
$11.18 The goal of Leona Lewis' 2007 debut, Spirit, was to prove that an X Factor winner could be a phenomenon not just in the U.K., but in the rest of the world. The goal of her second album, 2009's Echo, is to prove that success was no fluke, to build upon "Bleeding Love" and turn Lewis into an actual diva. Certainly, Echo in any of its incarnations -- its song listings are tailored for individual markets, with the U.K. getting a cover of Oasis' "Stop Crying Your Heart Out," while the U.S. gets a second song co-written by Justin Timberlake -- uses the chilly, synthesized "Bleeding Love" as its foundation, creating a sheet of sound equal parts Euro-pop and modern American R&B. As opposed to the often-stuffy Spirit, this is proudly modern, and if the sounds emanating from the two sides of the Atlantic might seem to be aesthetically opposed, they're both producer-driven music ...

$25.15 This recording of the MC5 playing for a semi-enthusiastic audience on New Year's Day, 1970, in Saginaw, MI, has already been released at least twice before -- Total Energy issued these tapes under the title Teenage Lust, while excerpts surfaced on Receiver's Looking at You. By any name, this show finds the MC5 in solid form, playing some fan favorites from Kick Out the Jams along with roughly half of the tunes from the upcoming Back ...
