On Le Tigre's second album Kathleen Hanna is no less radical, but her politically charged agenda sounds a bit callous and simple. And that's no accident: Hanna is simple. The concept behind Le Tigre, and the thing that differentiates it from her previous band, Bikini Kill, is that the drum machine rules. Each of Feminist Sweepstakes' 13 songs plinks along the rat-a-tat-tat beat of programmed percussion. The political outline is just a side effect. And Hanna straddles the line between cheeky and obnoxious throughout. It's certainly her lack of humor that makes this an arduous listen; it's her punk sensibilities that keep it at least interesting. She's fierce and committed in a way that hundreds of her rock-rap foes aren't. Hanna's enemies are bigger this time, and for a simple-minded gal, that's a huge step forward. ~ Michael GallucciSpin (11/01, p.132) - 8 out of 10 - "...These 'roller skating jams' - the best synth-beat indie rock since...their zinester inverts Big Black - have so much certainty [any criticism] is irrelevant..." Q (12/01, p.140) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...A clever, catchy Day-Glo riot that anyone can join..." Uncut (12/01, p.111) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...FEMINIST SWEEPSTAKES is the catchiest lesson in sexual politics you're likely to hear his season....Music with a message is rarely this entertaining..." Alternative Press (01/02, pp.94-5) - 8 out of 10 - "...Some of the most original, passionate and listenable music of the year..." The Wire (1/02, p.41) - Ranked #5 in Wire's "50 Records of the Year 2001" - "...proves the link between rollerskating and political commitment." CMJ (10/15/01, p.7) - "...This is a SWEEPSTAKES anyone can win..." Mojo (Publisher) (11/01, p.98) - "...This is protest music that doesn't protest too much - a music with such a joy and wit to its outrage that it acquires a universality beyond its subject matter..." Feminist Sweepstakes album
$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummer's chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up a mini-empire based entirely on jam sessions. If Them Crooked Vultures brings to mind Homme's projects more than Grohl's or Jones', it's largely due to his role as lead vocalist and how guitar can push a rhythm section as powerful as this to the side, dominating with its grinding riffs and solos. ...
| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Feminist Sweepstakes CD music
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back ...
