| | Pack A D Tintype CD Pack A D Discography of CDs
Although TINTYPE was released by Mint Records, a Canadian label better known for twee indie pop, the debut album by the female duo The Pack A.D. has more in common with the aggressive, bluesy rock of the White Stripes, Mr. Airplane Man, or the Black Keys. Brash, loud, and bluesy, TINTYPE's 17 songs are simultaneously cool and cutting. Highlights include "Gold Rush" and "This Terror."
Photographer: Mark Maryanovich.
The Pack A.D.: Becky Black (vocals, guitar, piano); Maya Miller (drums).

Uncut (p.98) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Becky Black and Maya Miller are clearly in thrall to Bo Diddley and the Fat Possum roster....Three simple but haunting piano pieces prove the pair can stretch beyond the retro." Q (Magazine) (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Black's repertoire of bluesy affectations recalls Janis Joplin and throughout the pair's love of original bluesmen such as Leadbelly shines through..." Tintype
$11.65 EVERCLEAR, AMC's finest hour and one the '90s' most powerful albums, is simultaneously lush and searing, heartache and despair borne out in elegant arrangements that combine fragile prettiness and soul-baring howls of pain. Multi-instrumentalist Bruce Kaphan rose to the occasion of his production debut. The canyons of reverb on the instruments are strangely appropriate, highlighting the almost decadent, tragically beautiful feel of the songs. Keyboards, pedal steel, and acoustic guitars drift like abandoned ships swirling around in a colorfully tempestuous sea full of unknown nautical demons. Guitarist Vudi contributes some of the most artful, non-traditional sounds ever concocted by a "rock" axeman.
The album begins with a slow, soulful lament to a love who's either sleeping or dead, before taking up the subject of mortality more fully in the anthemic "Rise," written by Eitzel for an ...
| | Organ Grab That Gun CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Tintype
$14.49 The Organ's 2002 debut EP Sinking Hearts was more captivating than most of that year's full-length releases: over the course of just 15 minutes, the band crafted chiaroscuro meditations on falling in and out of love that were just as light and jangly as they were dark and brooding. The EP was a promising beginning, and Grab That Gun, the Organ's first album, builds on that promise by delivering more appealingly moody music instead of reinventing the band's sound. It's tempting, initially, to be slightly disappointed that the Organ didn't broaden its sonic territory. But, even though the music remains remarkably focused, Grab That Gun proves that the band has plenty of room for expression within its rather limited palette of droning organs, succinct drumming and sharp, upturned guitar lines that give new meaning to the term "hook." While this sound comes from the legacy of '80s college rock -- at times suggesting a fusion of the Smiths' ...

$18.05 Any reasonable music fan would be forgiven for being wary of a collection of American folk music whose executive producer was former attorney general Janet Reno, but as it happens Reno knows more about such things than one might expect. At the very least Reno had the good judgment to suggest singer, songwriter and activist Ed Pettersen coordinate an album of songs that reflected different aspects of American history, from the colonial period to the present day. Pettersen's long gestating project, Song of America, has finally surfaced as a hefty three-CD set, featuring 50 songs from as many artists, and the final product is frequently fascinating and ambitious stuff, music that demonstrates how art mirrors our history and how that art can carry its message in a broad range of ...

| | Hooray For Earth Cellphone CD (2008)
Tintype
$7.95 Promising young Boston quartet Hooray for Earth build on their self-titled debut with the all-new and even better Cellphone EP. The sound of these eight songs (including two untitled, experimental bonus tracks) is appealingly homemade and lo-fi; on noisier songs like "Izod," the intrinsic hissing and distortion are used as musical elements in themselves. More ...
| | Everthus The Deadbeats John Kill And The Microscopic Lullaby CD (2008) Digipak
Tintype
$10.85 Muncie, IN, is the sort of small college town (like Athens, GA, or Lawrence, KS) where bands start up largely out of a lack of much else to do. Freed from the temptation to follow the trends of the moment, these bands can occasionally grow so insular and weird that unless you happen to know the songwriters personally, it's near impossible to tell just what they're on about. Released in 2007, Addicts Stuck in Traffic suggested that this might be the fate of Everthus the Deadbeats, but the band's far superior full-length debut, John Kill and the Microscopic Lullaby, is both even odder and, crucially, far more accessible than the debut EP. Rather than the sense of near-random weirdness for its own sake that occasionally plagued the EP, John Kill and the Microscopic Lullaby integrates its more unusual aspects smoothly into the well-arranged, carefully constructed songs, such as the sudden vocal chorale that at one point overtakes the limpid chamber pop of "Twenty-Three." Similarly, more purely atmospheric passages like the electronic pulses of "General L.C.D. Quartz" and the dreamy psychedelic waltz "Sweetie" are kept brief enough to avoid bogging down the generally more song-oriented ...

$13.69 Music is Jaclyn Bradley's first language. Singing since the early age of three, her voice has been her vehicle to experiencing the world. It is the vessel that placed her at Indiana University where she received a BM in Vocal Performance. After graduation, Jaclyn longed to break free from the reigns of classical and explore the rock music that she had always loved. She immersed herself in rock and began writing, recording and performing in New York and Los Angeles. She has played legendary ...
