On two other songs where Yoko is not the dominant theme, she is nevertheless invoked through the "oh no, oh no" refrain. That's not to say that love songs predominate. Half of the material covers similar terrain to PLASTIC ONO BAND, but the themes are balanced by hope and even light-heartedness. "Crippled Inside" is leavened by its country stylings including Dobro, courtesy of George Harrison, who also spices up two of the album's pivotal tracks, "Gimme Some Truth" and "How Do You Sleep?" (the latter is a vitriolic attack on Paul McCartney). Outside of PLASTIC ONO BAND, this may be Lennon's finest solo album.
Considered together, IMAGINE and its startling predecessor, PLASTIC ONO BAND, paint a vivid picture of the state of John Lennon immediately post-Beatles. If PLASTIC ONO BAND found John working out his hitherto repressed feelings about childhood and stardom, then the abiding impression of IMAGINE is John's one certainty in this storm of doubts and recrimination: his love for Yoko. "Jealous Guy," with its peerless vocal and a spot-on arrangement for strings, is sublime. "Oh My Love" is all delicacy and melodiousness. "Oh Yoko!" is a celebratory finale with none of the cloying self-obsession of John and Yoko's home movies.
Personnel: John Lennon (electric guitar); John Tout, Joey Badfinger, Tommy Badfinger, Andy, Ted Turner, Rod Linton (acoustic guitar); George Harrison (dobro); King Curtis (saxophone); Nicky Hopkins (piano); John Barham (harmonium); Klaus Voormann (bass instrument); Jim Gordon , Jim Keltner (drums); Alan White (cymbals); Steve Brendell (maracas); Mike Pinder (tambourine).
Rolling Stone (10/28/71, p.48) - "...On the evidence of IMAGINE, I don't think that John has resolved the manner in which a masterpiece and an artistic dead-end like POB can succesfully be followed....But then, great artists, of whom John is one, are nothing if not resourceful..." Q (7/00, p.140) - Included in Q's "The Best Male Angst Albums Of All Time" Q (4/00, pp.104-5) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...a strange, contrary record with touches of genius....extraordinarily beautiful....it is a signpost to one of the 20th Century's major figures....proof that genius is a series of fleeting moments..." Mojo (Publisher) (4/00, p.106) - "...Contains both the best and worst of the man - the idealist and the ranter, the righteous and the vindictive anger....So you take your choice between the pantheistic songs or the pissed-off plodders..." NME (Magazine) (9/18/93, p.19) - Ranked #34 in NME's list of The Greatest Albums Of The '70s. Imagine Review

| | Stephen Stills Just Roll Tape CD (2007) Bonus Track
Imagine CD music
$10.05 In fact, the whole night seems designed by the infamously raw producer David Briggs: tracks are brisk, mistakes are kept, the sound is rough, and every song sounds like a first take. And what a string of first takes: "So Begins the Task"--later released on MANASSAS--anticipates the finger-picked bleakness of DEJA VU's "4 & 20"; "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" finds particular starkness as a solo song despite the jubilant open chords; and "The Doctor Will See You Now" holds its own against anything in Young's catalog. While his songwriting and guitar playing are stellar, Stills's voice is equally stunning, with its tender, affecting rasp making an AM weeper like "Helplessly Hoping" sound tough. A rough gem of a listen, but a must-have for any fans of Stills or of Crosby, Stills & Nash.

$20.15 John Lennon's 1970 official solo debut is as remarkable for its startling contrast to the Beatles as it is for the passion and force of its songwriting. Stripped-down, gripping, and emotionally resonant, PLASTIC ONO BAND has little to do with the hook-heavy pop of his early Beatles work, or the psychedelic, word-salad approach of his songs on SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEART'S CLUB BAND and ABBEY ROAD. Instead, this is an album of intensely confessional songs that lay bare the personal demons Lennon was trying to exorcise at the time--the ghosts ...

$20.15 This remastered version contains 3 bonus tracks and a new 32-page booklet.
On this disc, Lennon tackles his usual messages including love (of Yoko and mankind in general), peppy optimism in the face of dire circumstances, and humorous observations of crazy times and conditions. The breadth of his interests has always been gargantuan, and somehow when Lennon switches between the global focus of the title track to the personal "Yoko (I'm Sorry, I'm Sorry, Yoko)," he convinces us that these sentiments are not all that far apart. The playful, sexy "Tight As" is a jaunty rockabilly number reminding us that Lennon knows where he comes from.
On "One Day At A Time," a love song with nursery rhyme metaphors, Lennon's silvery falsetto, ...

| | D R Auten Solo Guitar And Vocals, Vol. 2 CD (2004)
Imagine songs
$16.45 by John D'Agostino Award-winning Music Critic, Los Angeles Times"...Auten's recordings attest to the wisdom of his career choice. If you had to describe his guitar style in terms of well-known artists, you might say he grafts Chet Atkins to Albert Lee. But Auten's instrumentals are more than clumps of notes and chords thrown together to invoke familiar influences or to exhibit technical prowess---although he has that in abundance. They are more like finger-orchestrated songs with silent vocals, their expressive phrasings and thoughtful transitions speaking of the joys, heartaches, humorous musings, and simple pleasures that can't find expression in mere words. From adrenaline-pumped breakdowns to bittersweet tone poems, from sly, country-fied ambles to highconcept epics employing otherworldly "special effects" (with nothing but his hands and guitar, he variously evokes a cat's meow, Scottish bagpipes, a swamp frog's ribbit, a locomotive's rhythmic chuff and lonely whistle, a bass guitar, a spider's crawl, or a Chinese parade), Auten's solo compositions have the depth, breadth, and texture of "acoustic paintings" (which, not coincidentally, is the name of one of his finest albums). As if his guitar playing weren't enough gift for one human being, Auten also is an exceptional singer. Indeed, fans of his guitar work are blown away when they hear his voice, which seems to blend the emotional delivery and sensitive phrasing of Kenny Loggins with the dulcet, Dixie tenor of Vince Gill. D.R. Auten is a complete package---a guitarist, vocalist, songwriter-composer, performer, and recording artist whose spark of originality is beginning to set some brush fires in the music world. Someday soon, everyone will be feeling the heat. I heartily urge the discriminating music lover to check him out now, while it's still possible to discover him." -----------D.R.
