Godspell, the second musical of the early '70s to be based on the life of Jesus Christ (following Jesus Christ Superstar, which hit the record racks, but not the stage first), was something of a sleeper, opening off-off-Broadway in May 1971, with an original cast album that belatedly became a big success in 1972 after "Day By Day" was released as a single and hit the Top Ten. By then, the show had moved to off-Broadway and was well on its way to a run that would exceed 2,500 performances (and eventually reach Broadway itself). Bell Records, a subsidiary of Columbia Pictures, had released that cast album, and the film company quickly put a movie version into production. Happily, composer Stephen Schwartz retained musical control, and the film, other than using various deserted New York City locations as its set, was quite faithful to the stage version. Five of the ten ensemble performers were retained from the original cast, along with all four of the original musicians, and Schwartz produced the music, as he had on the cast album. As such, the soundtrack album offered him the opportunity to improve upon the cast album, and he did. Bio: Jaguar Elijah NewtonBorn: Florida Jaguar Elijah Newton loved music as a small boy. He would sing and listen to the radio while living in Alabama and later in Georgia on his family’s farm. Some of the inspirations for many songs came from those childhood memories. A Hundred Pounds of Cotton, was about his family picking cotton on the farm. O’L River was looking back to his days camping on the Swannee River. Alabama Down was written while he was living in New York and was homesick for his home town.He taught himself to play the guitar while in High School. He and his friends would imitate Elvis, Marty Robins, Roy Orbison and various bands. Elijah and his first band Sweet Wine, played in the local clubs in North Florida. They did cover songs but became most well known for the original songs they would perform weekly. At the peak of their success they could play 4 hours and never repeat the same song. They had a large following that packed the clubs each time they played. He was a local celebrity and had his single played by the local radio stations and was included in the juke boxes next to his favorites Credence Clearwater Revival, Beatles, Elvis, and other major artist.Due to a tragic auto accident the band had to be disbanded. Elijah could not sing or talk for two years. He never lost his love of music and continued to write and play guitar. Once he recovered he would perform at various places from New York, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. Many of the places he played he would listen to stories and legends and write songs about them.
