Home Sweet Home album
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version of "Nutrocker" ever cut, doesn't do much to break that spell. But ...

Home Sweet Home CD music
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' first ...

Home Sweet Home songs
$6.69 Latest reviews of the track "What You'll Find" from the new Charlie West CD "I Must Be In The Wrong Place" from The Consensus indie review site:Jonathan Sanders gave a score of 7.25 / 10. Comments were:If this song is any indication, Charlie West has a future in the songwriting business. The opening is simple yet it expresses what the song's going to be. And West has a competent voice, sounding as though he'd be comfortable in both the folk and bluegrass genre. It's an expressive sound, even when he keeps it really low key. The Captain gave a score of 6.41 / 10. Comments were:Folk has both advantages and shortcomings built right in. The advantage is that the lyrics can be heard; this is an advantage as long as the lyrics are worthy of hearing. In the case of 'What You'll Find' what you'll find is they aren't bad - not great, but not bad. The major shortcoming of folk is that the voice is nearly naked, save for the light tracery of an acoustic guitar. This is only a shortcoming when the voice needs covering or the tracery is poor. Neither is the case here. What you'll find with 'What You'll Find' is that the voice and playing are both very pleasant - above average. Short story: nice song, not exceptional, but altogether pleasant, nicely played. The Goat gave a score of 7.66 / 10. Comments were:Either this song cuts off abruptly at under two minutes, or it is edited to be under two minutes ... either way ... this folk song has some interesting elements to it. I am really not sure how to react to it. It's simple, unfettered and uncluttered. It speaks to a different time, but somehow is as fresh to this day, as perhaps it was once - yesterday. It's on auto restart ... it's easy to listen to alot. Okay, there is sound following the 1:51 mark .. good ... I thought I was trippin' again. ;)Christian Lowensprung gave a score of 7.37 / 10. Comments were:A nice and comfortable folk / pop song. Kind of reminds me a little of Crowded House's easy style. Both vocal and guitar fit well together, and help to bring "What you'll find" to where it should be: Calm, floating, dreamy, and solid. | | Camren Von Davis Bobby Barbados CD (2007)
Home Sweet Home songs
$13.15 “Cactus Lizard” is the initial track on “Bobby Barbados”, and it showcases a very interesting musical style. Von Davis creates a folky, singer-songwriter type of music but creates a narrative style that is not typically present in this style of music. “Cactus Lizard” discusses the quandary of being a lizard where everyone else is a cactus, allowing Von Davis to add a little bit of Mexican influence to the track. The track gradually increases in speed with the danger felt by Von Davis’ character, until that point when “Clouds of Poison” starts up. “Clouds of Poison” is a track that drastically increases the technical complexity of “Bobby Barbados”, blending together drums, guitar, and bass into a scintillating track that shifts back and forth between the constituent elements acting in a harmonious and a dissonant way. While there is not as much of a narrative aspect to “Clouds of Poison”, the track is as important as “Cactus Lizard” because it shows that what Von Davis is doing here is testing the boundaries of what is possible with music. While few individuals would link what Von Davis is doing during “Bobby Barbados” to post-modern classical composers, I see some similarity in “Bobby Barbados” to what Kryzsztof Pendrecki, John Cage, or Philip Glass have done in the last ...
