"Joan Cusack Handler writes the full orchestral score of what is female," says renowned poet Afaa Michael Weaver. Widely acclaimed for her fierce and emotionally charged poems and her passionate and evocative readings, Handler performs here a selection from her published collection GlOrious. She has received awards from The Boston Review and five Pushcart nominations and her poems have appeared in The Boston Review, Poetry East, Seattle Review, and Southern Humanities Review. In her “other lives” she is an essayist, memoirist, creative writing teacher, a psychologist in clinical practice and the publisher and senior editor of CavanKerry Press, a not for profit literary press that serves both art and community. She has served as resident faculty at The Robert Frost Place Center for the Arts where she is co-chair of the advisory board. Handler lives in Fort Lee, New Jersey and East Hampton, New York with her husband, Alan. They have one son, David, 27, a composer, violinist and violist, co-founder of Le Poisson Rouge, a music venue in Manhattan and the producer of this CD. Glorious music CDs
$7.75 Great White North is the hit comedy album from Bob & Doug McKenzie, better known as SCTV veterans Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas, respectively. There's one serious problem, though. It's not very funny as a whole. The shtick is that the McKenzie brothers are lazy, beer-swilling dimwits who focus on Canadian culture and rely heavily on slang interjections and put-downs like "take off," "beauty, eh?," and "hoser." Only two selections are truly noteworthy. The first is the catchy novelty hit "Take Off," which features Rush's Geddy Lee singing on the chorus. The edited single eliminated the playful banter among Lee and the McKenzie brothers before and after the song portion. Lee's supposed reason for participating? "Ten bucks is ten bucks." The Yuletide favorite "Twelve Days of Christmas" replaces the traditional gifts with items such as beer, turtleneck sweaters, French toast, toques, backbacon, cigarettes, and comic books. The brothers are overcome by their version, and Bob McKenzie says it's comparable to "Stairway to Heaven." A few other cuts are OK. "The Beerhunter" is about a Russian roulette-like ...

$8.49 Step into the zany brain of Weird Al as he serves up another eclectic bag of pasquinades and original tunes. Yankovic's spoofs remain true to the melody, and the lyrics flow well as he satirizes a potpourri of poppers from Coolio ("Amish Paradise") to TLC ("Phony Calls") to U2 ("Cavity ...

| | Bootsy Collins This Boot Is Made For Fonk-N CD (1979)
Glorious songs
$10.69 Opener "Under the Influence of a Groove" indicates the album will take no prisoners, a promise followed up with sizzling tracks such as "Bootsy Get Live" and "Jam Fan (Hot)." While there's not as much variation here as on other Bootsy solo outings (there's a complete dearth of Bootsy's slow-groove ballads, for example), the funk is kept at such a consistently high pitch (thanks in part to Bootsy's stupendous band, which includes numerous fellow P-funkateers) that it's hard to complain.
Bootsy Collins closed out a spectacular decade with 1979's THIS BOOT IS MADE FOR FONK-N. Both with Parliament-Funkadelic and as a solo artist, Bootsy was one of the key figures of funk in the `70s, and THIS BOOT, a non-stop collection of hard, ferocious funk jams, shows why.
