BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. This three-movement "meditation" on the environment was recorded during a break in the Total Musik Meeting of 1993 in Berlin. This 53-minute work -- in three titled movements -- is played on cornet by Morris; trombone, flute, and a myriad of electronic devices by Deane; and Ninh using every kind of metallic instrument he can get his hands on. And while it's true that this music is "outside," it is only in the context that it is improvised and played outside normal time signatures and notions of rhythm, meter, and timbre. But it possesses all those things too. In this way it is inside: inside the focus of meditation and music. It is intimate, quiet, subdued, reflective, and yet full of the kind of searching that only three musical masters in search of speaking to each other can take. In "Ozone-Burning Red," Morris takes the lead with long, whispered lines almost rolling out of his cornet and Deane uses an electronic backdrop to illuminate his playing before entering with a trombone, while Ninh shimmers cymbals and gongs with his fingers and brushes to illustrate the solemnity of the collective's purpose. While they were wildly popular in Great Britain during their short lifespan, the Springfields are remembered as little more than one-hit wonders in the United States, and while some Stateside listeners doubtless recall their version of "Silver Threads and Golden Needles," which was a major chart in America, few of them are likely to remember that the group gave Dusty Springfield her first taste of stardom. On an Island of Dreams: The Complete Philips UK Recordings is a retitled reissue of the 1997 collection Over the Hills and Far Away, which brings together everything the Springfields released through Philips between 1961 and 1964, and while this is more Springfields than most fans might necessarily want, it documents the group's strengths and weaknesses admirably well. While the Springfields were often compared to popular American folk acts such as the Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul & Mary, ultimately they had more in common with the New Christy Minstrels or the Limelighters, performers who combined nightclub-friendly arrangements and showmanship with a repertoire drawn from the popular folk idiom. The Springfields made records that were as slick as anything to come out of a British recording studio in the days before the Beatles, with their guitars and bongos accompanied by a big studio band (and sometimes a string section), and they jazzed up numbers like "Allentown Jail," "Tzena Tzena Tzena," and "Goodnight Irene" in a way their more serious American contemporaries would never have imagined (how many other acts would have recorded something called "Wimoweh Mambo"?).
