The film tells the story of the Japanese invasion of Nanking, China in the early days of World War II and focuses on the efforts of a small group of unarmed Westerners who established a Safety Zone where over 200,000 Chinese found refuge. The events of the film are told through deeply moving interviews with Chinese survivors, archival footage, and chilling testimonies of Japanese soldiers, interwoven with staged readings of the Westerners' letters and diaries as performed by Jurgen Prochnow, Woody Harrelson, Stephen Dorff, and Mariel Hemingway, among others. In 1937, Japanese armed forces entered Nanking, China, and systematically raped and killed over 200,000 Chinese in one of human history's worst atrocities. Decades later, there's still bad blood and unresolved tensions. This wrenching documentary from Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman combines harrowing archival footage, interviews with survivors (including contrite Japanese vets), and reenactments with actors Woody Harrelson, Stephen Dorff, Mariel Hemingway, and Jurgen Prochnow (as a Schindler-like member of the Nazi party), reading from the diaries of real-life heroic westerners who set up a safety zone in attempt to shelter the hundreds of thousands of refugees from the city. Though this element adds some much-needed hope for humanity, this is still a deeply upsetting documentary. It's very well made and should be considered required viewing, but be warned: some of the rarely-before-seen archival footage is truly graphic and disturbing. Based on the bestselling book, THE RAPE OF NANKING by Iris Chang, this documentary makes effective use of a quietly shattering Kronos Quartet score. The film is presented in English, Japanese, and Mandarin with English subtitles. Theatrical Release: December 12, 2007 (Limited)

Nanking Movie Review Remember Nanking This is a fair documentary of the atrocities committed by the Japanese on the Chinese in 1937. In the western world precious little has ever been said or discussed of this terrible tragedy. All people should see this to understand the tensions between the Japanese and the Chinese. All people should see this to remember the price of doing nothing or being ill prepared to deal with hostile governments and the price that being ill prepare will cost in terms of lives and suffering. | | God Grew Tired Of Us: The Story Of Lost Boys Of Sudan DVDs (2007) With CD Sampler
Nanking movie DVD
$21.19 GOD GREW TIRED OF US tells the remarkable story of the Lost Boys of Sudan. In 1987, with explosive violence in the Sudan because of civil war, 25,000 young boys between the ages of three and thirteen fled from their homes, beginning a five-year trek that ultimately led the survivors--many of the boys died along the treacherous journey through the desert--to a United Nations refugee camp in Kakuma, Kenya. Nicknamed the Lost Boys after the characters in J. M. Barrie's PETER PAN, they formed a tight community in the camp, though they still had little food and shelter and a bleak future. In 2001, 38,000 of the boys, now grown into men, were selected to be relocated to the United States, where they were to be given a new lease on life. Writer-director Christopher Quinn and codirector Tommy Walker closely follow three of the men as they try to make a go of it in what for them is a whole new world--they never before had flown in an airplane, shopped in a supermarket, or turned on an electric light. Daniel Abol Pach and Panther Blor move into Pittsburgh, while John Bul Dau is sent to Syracuse, where he struggles to maintain his African ...
