Omega
$19.10 John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers: John Mayall (vocals, piano, organ, harmonica); Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); John McVie (bass); Hughie Flint (drums).
Includes original release liner notes by Neil Slaven & reissue liner notes by Paul Trynka.
1966's BLUESBREAKERS WITH ERIC CLAPTON is full of portent, as some of its participants would become superstars after its release. Future Cream guitarist Eric Clapton was highly rated enough in the UK blues-rock scene to score second billing, but it wasn't until this recording that he'd had the opportunity to truly stretch out in the studio and show off his awesome soloing skills. Clapton's earlier stint in the Yardbirds had found his ideas largely shouted down by pop-oriented producer/manager Giorgio Gomelsky, but here kindred spirit/producer Mike Vernon simply let Clapton play as he wished. The sympathetic rhythm section of Hughie Flint and future Fleetwood Mac founder John McVie, along with Mayall's best-ever vocals and organ, make BLUESBREAKERS WITH ERIC CLAPTON one of the all-time great British blues albums.
Full performer name: John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers.
Additional personnel: Alan Skidmore (tenor saxophone); John Almond (baritone saxophone); Dennis Healey (trumpet).
| | Gov't Mule By A Thread CD (2009)
Omega
$12.29 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty growl hammering down lyrics like a Southern fire-and-brimstone preacher with earthshaking soul. The material on this set is tight; there is less jamming but Gordie Johnson's production and mixing equalize everything at ten, making it feel like the disc is recorded live.
The set opens with the pulsing bass throb of "Broke Down on the Brazos," just before Haynes and guest guitarist Billy Gibbons enter and let the tough, riff-laden blues snarl get in and slash it up a bit. The roar is wondrously deafening and the pace is fierce. Likewise, the slightly more tuneful "Steppin' Lightly" does anything but. With its funky big rock trio riff, it kicks up dust with Haynes playing some killer funk-laden fills as Carlsson and Abst syncopate and pop through both hard rock and reggae backbeats. The hook on the choruses is a nice surprise, but it's anything BUT a pop song. Other notables include the Delta blu

| | Jamey Johnson That Lonesome Song CD (2008)
Omega
$12.65 Jamey Johnson is a successful songwriter on Nashville's Music Row, who has authored hits by George Strait and Trace Adkins. THAT LONESOME SONG, Johnson's debut album as a performer, is a happy throwback to the outlaw country of the 1970s, with Johnson's gruff, character-filled vocals surrounded by a small, rocking combo including pedal steel, organ, and fiddles. Rather than the polished soft rock of so much contemporary Nashville product, THAT LONESOME SONG is a rough and ready honky-tonk album that compares favorably to Waylon Jennings and early Steve Earle. Highlights include "Mowin' Down the Roses" and the celebratory "Between Jennings and Jones."
Personnel: Jamey Johnson (vocals, guitars, tubular bells); Scott Welch, Wayd Battle (electric guitar); Eddie Long (steel guitar, dobro); Jim "Moose" Brown (keyboards); Kevin Grantt (bass guitar); Dave Macafee (drums); Curtis Wright, Wyatt Beard (background vocals).
| | Michael Jackson Bad CD (1987) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Special Edition
Omega
$7.59 Digitally remastered by Bernie Grundman (Bernie Grundman Mastering, Los Angeles, California).
Jackson's domination of the world record market continued following Thriller, although by comparison it was an almighty flop with only 12 million sales. As Pink Floyd and Dire Straits have proved, one album can go completely sales haywire without necessarily being any better. The title track and the gorgeous "Man In The Mirror" were substantial hits, but quality material such as "Dirty Diana" and "Liberian Girl" bolster a strong album. Jackson also seemed to have found the romance he seeks in "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" and "The Way You Make Me Feel." Regardless of his press, history clearly shows that he has made a lot of people very, very happy.

| | Journey Greatest Hits CD (1988) Bonus Track; Remastered; Digipak
Omega
$9.29 This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
Along with Styx and REO Speedwagon, Journey ruled the charts and radio airwaves in the early '80s. And like the aforementioned bands, Journey began in the '70s, so obviously the compilers of its 1988 GREATEST HITS release had a lot of material to choose from.
Journey's sound was a merger of hard rock, compliments of guitarist Neal Schon, and the melodic pop/ballads of singer Steve Perry. This resulted in such classic rock radio staples as "Any Way You Want It," "Separate Ways," "Open Arms," "Don't Stop Believin'," "Wheel in the Sky," and "Who's Crying Now," all included here.
Greatest Hits is an excellent, thorough 14-track collection containing all of Journey's big hits, from 1978's "Wheel in the Sky" to 1986's "I'll Be Alright Without You." Although the songs aren't presented in chronological order and a handful of minor hits ("Suzanne," "Walks Like a Lady") aren't included, it doesn't matter, since every essential Journey single -- "Only the Young," "Don't Stop Believin'," "Any Way You Want It," "Separate Ways," "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'," "Open Arms," "Send Her My Love" -- is here, which means that it's all most casual fans will ever need. [The set was reissued in 2006 with an expanded booklet and the addition of one song, "When You Love a Woman," from 1996's Trial by Fire.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Omega
$11.49 Drumattica started as an experiment in Electronics and Tribal drums with Keith Brown (TV:616) and Brian Lehfeldt (TV:616,Sweaty Nipples). Eventually Drumattica turned into a full blown band with the vocals of Robert Wynia (Floater) and Jennifer Folker (Dahlia) and DJ Slowburn. Drumattica combines elements of trance and 80's genre New Wave with tribal drums and pop hooks. Picture Peter Gabriels Last Temptation of Christ with the Chemical Brothers meets The Doors and you've got the idea. The band has just released it's first full length CD (A Part of Something) and plays sporatically in the Northwest. The live shows bring even more power and punch to the music, creating an almost hypnotic state of ecstasy.
Unknown Contributor Roles: Brian Lehfeldt; Brandon Mikel; D.J. Slowburn; Keith Brown; Jennifer Folker; Robert Wynia.

Omega
$12.89 The band came together in 2006 to prod all the still-born children of this world into a guitar-and- drum-heavy frenzy of soulfulness. Rooted in music of deep convictions (NIN, Smashing Pumpkins, U2, Rage Against the Machine, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Kanye West, MeWithoutYou), Overhang believes rock'n'roll is still capable of changing the world. When they're not away, Chicago is sweet home for the band. The city's location in the heart of America suits OVERHANG's desire to find a middle way between opposing worlds. The band's music appeals to both indie and mainstream audiences, combines rock instrumentation with hip hop influenced beats, carries the spirit of classic rock into the future, bridges the gap between sacred and secular and offers heart n' soul to an industry not known for having either.Overhang's debut album was released in November of 2007. All but one of the tracks were mixed in Copenhagen, Denmark by long-time friend Janis Kalnins. Bassist Nate Bierdeman mixed the remaining track before it was mastered by Trevor Sadler of Mastermind Studios in Milwaukee, WI. The band is currently playing shows in the Midwest.

| | Brian Eno Apollo Atmospheres & Soundtracks CD (1983) Limited Edition; Mini LP Sleeve
Omega
$10.85 An invitation to score Al Reinert's film of the Apollo Mission's lunar landing provided Eno with the "opportunity to explore the feelings of space travel." APOLLO is "one small stepŕ" for Eno, here working both within and beyond the conceptual confines of his Ambient series. The disc's dozen gorgeous, evocative miniatures see Eno's first collaborative work with producer/guitarist Daniel Lanois--a collaborator who would prove central to many of Eno's subsequent projects--and with his own brother, pianist Roger Eno.
APOLLO contains some of Eno's most carefully crafted melodies, wrought impressionistically in limpid, quicksilver synth and gilded with Lanois's liquid guitar lines. "Matta" and "Under Stars II" imagine the wonders of weightlessness and zero-gravity drift. Lanois's "Silver Morning" views the dawn's smoldering glow from above, while the golden rays of "Deep Blue Day" strain to break at the planet's horizon. "An Ending (Ascent)" watches tearfully from the heavens as a tiny blue Earth falls away into the cradling arms of space; "Always Returning" welcomes the sight of terra firma's green expanses; and the twinkling "Stars" casts its eyes heavenward with a new sense of respect and homesick longing. An ambient masterpiece.
