Another Monday Night is the fourth CD release by Swingadelic, a fun and entertaining New York metro area “Little Big Band”. These sessions came as the result of the band’s Monday night performances at Maxwell’s in Hoboken NJ. All but one tracks are original compositions and arrangements by various band members. The stand out is Ellington’s “The Gal From Joe’s” that Swingadelic recorded for the soundtrack of “Play It By Ear”, a movie starring Michele Hurd and Rita Moreno. Bandleader and upright bassist Dave Post has assembled a first-rate, diverse and talented crew that sound like they are having a good time and communicate that feeling and spirit to the listener. The band features the talents of alto/tenor sax player Buddy Terry, veteran of the Ray Charles and Count Basie Orchestras, as well as the bands of Horace Silver and Art Blakey.Swingadelic has performed at Lincoln Center, NJPAC and the NYC BBQ, regional jazz & blues festivals and dances and concerts from Boston to Atlanta. I was excited when Blue Note Records offered me a contract in 2001. Blue Note Records released my CD “Melange” in August 2001 a month before 9-11. This was a difficult time for many artists around the world due to the overwhelming tragedies. The “Melange” CD sales did not go well during this time of grief, but this did not stop my dream of being a bandleader. My manger was Hitomi Kakuda. She arranged a two-week tour in Japan and a Rising Star tour in Germany. The tours were successful and my group became known to many in Japan and in Europe. I did not ask for assistance from Blue Note Records during these tours. I wanted to display what I was willing to do in order to present my music and my group. Everything seemed to be going well until Blue Note Records decided to discontinue my contract in 2002. I decided to take matters into my own hands. I was very pleased with the amazing musicians in my group and wanted to record a live CD with hope to gain another recording deal. My group for this CD consisted of many great musicians; Marcus Strickland, who was still in college attending The New York School of Music. This self-titled disc was recorded in 1964, one of the first releases on the landmark ESP label, and was re-released on CD in 1993.
The NYAQ was one of the first groups to forge the collective avant improvisation that would typify 1970s collectives like the Chicago Art Ensemble. Their eponymous debut epitomizes the approach, offering up a clattering, keening sound that searches and seeks while evoking colors, shapes, and patterns in the listener's mind. A collaboration with poet Amiri Baraka on "Sweet--Black Dada Nihilismus" is an added bonus. An overlooked avant jazz gem, NEW YORK ART QUARTET is a must for fans of the genre.
