Marcus album
$11.18 After his aborted, internet-leaked 2008 album, 12 PLAY: 4TH QUARTER, R. Kelly busied himself with guest spots for Beyonce, T-Pain, and Kanye West, even offering a free download on iTunes, "I Believe," inspired by the election of president Barack Obama. While such moves insured that Kelly would never stray far from the R&B throne he's occupied for more than a decade, his 2009 reboot of 12 PLAY, UNTITLED, should provide more than enough reason for fans to keep coming back for more. From Auto Tune-laden crowd pleasers like "Outta the Game" and "Crazy Night" to rousing club-oriented numbers like "Echo," Kelly downplays the slower "baby-making" jams this time around for a set of largely up-tempo songs, capped by a sultry collaboration with Keri Hilson ("Number One").

| | Pink Funhouse CD (2008) Explicit
Marcus music CDs
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that Pink has lost any of her chutzpah.
If anything, there's an increased sense of confidence and newfound liberation on tracks like the chest-thumping "So What" and the mischievous, bouncing "Bad Influence." In softer moments, like the ballad "I Don't Believe You" and the soulful "One Wrong Foot," Pink channels her personal experience into expressions that carry no less strength or muscle. But FUNHOUSE is a pop album first and foremost, and its catchy choruses, rollicking beats, and memorable vocal performances won't ...
| | Al Jarreau Christmas CD (2008)
Marcus songs
$9.09 For the past few decades, Al Jarreau has established himself as a truly modern jazz singer, one for the post-fusion generation--those who grew up with the sounds of the cordial contemporary jazz of George Benson, Spyro Gyra, and Herbie Hancock. CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever collection of holiday songs on which he wraps his supple, honeyed vocal chords around some traditional Christmas classics. Jazz vocal combo Take 6 lend their voices for "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and the considered, varied arrangements of Jay Graydon and Jarreau himself keep the proceedings interesting.

| | Joss Stone Colour Me Free! CD (2009) Import
Marcus CD music
$30.38 The "free" in the title to Joss Stone's fourth album apparently refers to the neo-singer breaking free from the shackles of her major label, EMI, who apparently have not let Joss be Joss. That this constricting argument happens to be the exact same story line Stone used for 2007's Introducing Joss Stone, the splashy diva power trip meant to unveil the "real" singer, is conveniently forgotten, as is the modern R&B of that makeover, with Joss returning to all the retro-soul of her first two records. The one lingering element of Introducing is a propensity for melisma-laden oversinging, a tic that stands out in the warmer, funkier settings of Colour Me Free! Still, her raw vocal skills remain impressive, as does her taste in soul, and this does beat with a messy human heart. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Denise Gordon We Need The Children CD (2003)
Marcus songs
$12.69 "We Need the Children"CD Single Release by Denise GordonR&B with an African Flavorful Funk...was written for all the children of Africa. With war and disease plaguing the African continent, what is the foundation for its future... its children. "In Africa they die by the age of five..." is a fact where childhood diseases claim the lives of the innocent who do not have access to immunizations and potable water. "AIDS orphans by the time they are three..." holds true as the disease ravages the continent forcing children to grow up without one or both parents. "Wars rage as they give a child soldier a gun...." has been the norm in Congo, Burundi, Angola, Uganda, Sierre Leone, Rwanda and Liberia using upwards of 120,000 children during their past and current civil strife. The song serves as a reminder to the world that in order for it to survive, in order for a new day to evolve that will respond to society's ability to thrive... "We Need the Children." This song represents Denise Gordon's recording debut. It was featured during the Rally for Peace in Burundi in September 2002, where Denise was appropriately accompanied by 30 children in the performance. She is delighted that it is a song that carries a message while you tap your foot. It is most befitting that this native New Yorker launches her CD single in Africa as she started her singing career in Rwanda and has performed in Tanzania, Zanzibar, Kenya, Burundi and Uganda. Denise is a two-time winner of the Amateur Night at the Apollo in Harlem USA and has been an opening act for the sensational R&B group Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. "We Need the Children" was written by Denise Gordon in Burundi in central Africa, a country racked by a 10 year civil war, It was for a fund raiser to assist the Batwa children in Burundi. The Batwa, a marginalized group living on fringes of society, need assistance in so many ways, including educating their children. In rehearsal with her favorite musicians of Tatunane El Jazz from Tanzania, David Nhigula, Tom Nhigula, Charles Mhuto and Jean Marie "Buddy" Magloire from Burundi, they worked with Denise and created the groove. "We Need the Children" is an R&B mix with an African flavorful funk. The children voices heard in the background were recorded in a primary school playground in Buyenzi in Burundi's capital Bujumbura. Backing vocals were provided by local talent in Kigali and Bujumbura. The production and technical support was provided by Denise Gordon and Charles Mhuto from CafrikaVibe Productions in Dar es Salaam, Tedd Josiah from Blu Zebra Records in Nairobi and Aron ...
