| | Zac Brown Foundation CD (2008)
12 Girlfriends
$12.55 On 2008's THE FOUNDATION, singer/guitarist Zac Brown leads his ensemble on a vibrant set of country-rock. While the Georgia-based performer is clearly comfortable with ballads (see his emotive cover of Ray LaMontagne's "Jolene"), he seems most at home on twangy, carefree tracks such as "Toes," "Chicken Fried," and "Sic `Em on a Chicken." Now that Jimmy Buffett has tried repositioning himself as a country artist by cutting duets with the likes of Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney and Clint Black, it should come as no surprise that the Parrothead influence has begun making its way into Nashville, and the first major-label effort from Zac Brown features not one but two songs ("Toes" and "Where the Boat Leaves From") devoted to the joys of getting buzzed and playing music in some seaside locale with good weather. Seeing how most of the great names ...
| | Rush Working Men CD (2009)
12 Girlfriends
$14.54 Rush is no stranger to best-of compilation albums, they've released a slew of them. They are also no stranger to DVDs. To mark their 35th anniversary, they've released Working Men, which is both; it marks their first best-of live compilation exclusively from the DVD sets Rush in Rio (2003), R30 (2005), and Snakes & Arrows Live (2008). There is also an unreleased cut from R30 -- a killer version of One Little Victory. While fans may simply regard this as a record company cash grab, hardcore fans know how closely Rush monitors each release and controls all aspects of their career. On hearing these tracks without benefit of the visuals, it becomes lucidly clear that in the 21st century, Rush plays more like a hungry act looking to prove themselves rather than as seasoned veterans jaded by the entire business. The instrumental interaction ...

| | Porter Harp Drinking Season CD (2003)
12 Girlfriends
$11.39 Porter Harp Drinking SeasonSeattle-based singer/songwriter/guitar player, Porter Harp, assembled an all-star line up of his criminally talented musician pals for this remarkable 'solo' debut; friends he's collaborated with in various bands and projects for the last 10 years, including: Jim Roth (the Delusions, Built to Spill), Tim Fekete (the Delusions), Jeff Baars (Mike Johnson's live band), Anne Marie Ruljancich (Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter, the Walkabouts), and Dave Keppel (the Delusions, Lazy). The resulting magic of this unique synthesis transports the listener through a psychedelic weave of atmospheric, Americana-inspired space rock warmly wrapped in the hazy cloud of a late night, whiskey-mellowed, Crazy Horse-style jam session.Drinking Season was produced and engineered by the infamous Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Modest Mouse) along with Porter Harp and Jim Roth. Together they managed to create a sound that appeals to the over 30 crowd weaned on 70's rock, that the can kids dig too. Think Wilco meets Neil Young at a Pink Floyd recording session with the benefit of a modern perspective and lots o' vintage gear, yet somehow transported back to the fall of 1978, and you'll begin to get the idea. Reviews/Feedback:Matt Johnson of the Belltown Paper describes the record as, "...excellent drinking-in-the-backyard-with-a-couple-of-your-dumbass-friends music, at summer's end. Porter's a guy who needs comforting, but from a couple of shots and a game of pool - not from a hug...these are well crafted songs...makes for damn good listening."Tom Scanlon of the The Seattle Times had this to say in a recent show preview, "Also on the bill at the Long Winters Crocodile show: Porter Harp, a singer-songwriter with a strong debut called "Drinking Season." Produced by Phil Ek (Modest Mouse, Built to Spill), Harp's album is a moody, twangy delight."Cincinnati's City Beat Weekly touted "Drinking Season" as, "hazy melodic Pop from this Seattle singer/songwriter [Porter Harp] with guitarist Jim Roth of Built To Spill".Daniel Cascaddan, Student Manager at KOUG, emailed this comment while reviewing "Drinking Season" for airplay, "I am listening to Drinking Season and I must say, from the first track this CD stands out as the best thing I have heard this week, and even though I am only about half way through the two dozen or so CDs we got yesterday (the station only gets mail delivery from campus mail once a week), I will be very surprised if I hear anything better!"Daniel of CD Baby says, "Good shit, [Drinking Season] has elements of roots rock, brit pop and americana along with some psychedelic stuff."Joseph Kyle of Mudanesounds.com wrote, "...Porter Harp is a man who has taken his love of bands such as Modest Mouse and Built to Spill, and doesn't really hide that fact on his debut album, Drinking Season. Drinking Season [also] owes much ...
| | Gentle Giant Octopus CD (1972) (Import) Japan; Remastered; Super-High Material
12 Girlfriends
$43.69 Japanese only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD - playable on all CD players) pressing. Universal. 2008.
Personnel: Raymond Shulman (vocals, guitar, bass violin, percussion); Kerry Minnear (vocals, cello, keyboards, vibraphone, percussion, background vocals); Phil Shulman (vocals, saxophone, trumpet, background vocals); Derek Shulman (vocals, alto saxophone); Gary Green (guitar, percussion); John Wethers (drums, congas, percussion). Along with THREE FRIENDS, OCTOPUS is a fine example of Gentle Giant 's early-1970s heyday, which featured the oft-underrated British progressive-rock ensemble deftly balancing complex arrangements with catchy melodies and intriguing multi-part vocal harmonies. While the frenetic instrumental "The Boys in the Band" showcases the group's tight-knit musicianship, "Knots" finds the Schulman brothers (Derek, Phil, and Ray) and company venturing into Queen-like a cappella moments, albeit with an even quirkier approach. For listeners wanting to sample Gentle Giant's considerable '70s catalogue, OCTOPUS warrants an extended visit. Returning to Gentle Giant's fourth album after any kind of lengthy absence, it's astonishing just how little Octopus has dated. Often written off at the time as a pale reflection of the truly gargantuan steps being taken by the likes of Jethro ...
