Originally released in 1965, EXPLOSIONS by the Bob James Trio is one of the first recordings to merge traditional jazz instrumentation with electronics. Pianist James is joined by bassist Barre Williams and percussionist Robert Pozar, with electronic effects courtesy of Robert Ashley and Gordon Mumma. Improvisatory work from the trio is augmented by strange, seemingly random sounds for a fascinating, often humorous sonic journey meant to replicate the modern urban experience. This music is leagues removed from the smooth jazz James would go on to create.
Bob James, a recent college graduate, brought ESP a master of asession he had produced, featuring Barre Phillips and Bob Pozar. He chose for the front cover a torn poster he had photographed on a visit to Australia. In 1974, having garnered several gold records, he returned to visit ESP on the ground floor at 290 West End Avenue, in New York City. After a quarter century apart, the core line-up of the jazz quartet Return to Forever--Chick Corea, Lenny White, Stanley Clark, and Al Di Meola--reunited for a world tour in 2008. This remarkable concert film captures the foursome on stage at Montreux, playing bewitching renditions of "Vulcan Worlds," "Sorceress," "Romantic Warrior," and many others.
The band was at the forefront of jazz/rock fusion in the 70s and were formed by a former Miles Davis sideman, in this case the great Chick Corea. Return To Forever hit their commercial and artistic peak with a string of albums in the mid-seventies featuring the line-up of Chick Corea on keyboards, Stanley Clarke on bass, Al Di Meola on guitar and Lenny White on drums. In 2008 this classic line-up reunited for their first tour in 25 years and proved that their musicianship and the chemistry within the band were as strong as ever. This concert was filmed at Montreux in July 2008 with the bonus tracks being filmed in Clearwater, Florida later the same month.

Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy generated by the stage environment, focuses attention on the guitarist's skills as a creative six-string bluesman who expands the narrow confines of the genre by adding soul and jazz influences. He kicks off the set with a lazy, wah-wah enhanced "Supernatural," the title track to his 1999 disc, and revs up the energy from there, jumping into the instrumental "Indianola." This is where Ford seamlessly combines rock, blues, jazz, and surf into a five-minute tour de force, leading one to believe that a vocal-free show might display his superb guitar talents even better.

This Verve compilation features a nice overview of sides recorded by trumpeter/vocalist Louis Armstrong during the '50s and '60s. Perhaps not the definitive collection collectors may be searching for, The Very Best of Louis Armstrong is, however, a great compilation. Included are such well-known tracks as "Hello Dolly" and "What a Wonderful World" along with lesser-known gems as "You Rascal You" and "Top Hat, White Tie and Tails."
