Transmissions album
$12.85 After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck "Must Be Santa," which barrelhouses like a barroom, Dylan doesn't really reinterpret these songs as much as simply play them with his crackerjack road band, dropping in a little flair -- restoring "we'll have to muddle through somehow" to "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," singing the opening of "O Come All Ye Faithful" in its original Latin -- but never pushing tunes in unexpected directions. Many would argue having Dylan croon these carols is unexpected enough and, true, there are times ...
| | Trans-Siberian Orchestra Night Castle CDs (2009)
Transmissions CD music
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the ...

| | Elias & The Wizzkids Little Mess CD (2008)
Transmissions songs
$19.49 A sweetly sunny Swedish indie pop outfit in the tradition of I'm from Barcelona, Billie the Vision & the Dancers, the Acid House Kings, and hordes more, with a disarmingly direct, plain-spoken, and personal lyrical approach reminiscent of Pelle Carlberg, Jonathan Richman, and Herman Düne, Elias and the Wizzkids burst out of Stockholm with a mustachioed grin and a slew of bopping tunes. It may all seem rather blithely, even blissfully normal, in a pleasantly bland sort of way, but Elias Ĺkesson's got his problems just like anybody: he's anxious about turning 24 and becoming an adult; he's troubled by a vague sense that something's missing; he doesn't have enough money for all the flashy stuff (and girls) that he wants; his job sucks, and sometimes he can't get in touch with his friends and is stuck having a mildly disappointing night out on the town by himself, like the time recounted in the banally diaristic "Friday Night." And, of course, he'd sort of like it if people listened to his music, as per the typically straightforward opener/statement-of-purpose "Acknowledge Me," wherein he declares: "I'm gonna play now... from the deepest part of my soul." And so he does. And while this may not be your idea of deep soul music, you'd do well to acknowledge it, as long as you don't mind a bit of sap, because he's charming, likable, frequently funny (he's actually more affably reflective, and a good deal less self-deprecating than it may seem from the above), and most importantly, he and his Wizzkids have got some downright snappy songs. They're not too far removed from your typically strummy/bouncy/folky indie pop fare, with the occasional chamber pop infusion (a flute here, some strings there), a bit of a '50s rock edge at times (the rockabilly-tinged "I Wish" and "I Can't Afford You"), and a mild surprise in the form of mostly-solo-acoustic fingerpicked blues "Fourth of July." Another solid bunch of lovable Swedes, and a highly enjoyable debut. ~ K. Ross Hoffman
"A Little Mess is a jangly, bouncy celebration of the auditorily absurd. Harmonica, flute, howled lyrics and harmonized choruses crowd the album, which bears more in common with the lovelorn 1950s boy-girl group movement than their less accessible, cool as ice Svenska indie pop counterparts1. Indirectly addressing this disparity, their myspace banner announces, ''We’re though being cool.'' Lyrically, Elias and his beloved Wizzkids skew darker. When you’re not on stage hosting a geek-filled love fest...well, sometimes life kinda sucks. The album tracks the slow, determined progression into adulthood and everything that makes you lose sleep along the way. You turn 24, and ...
