Clarinetist Orange Kellin over 30 years ago led his New Orleans Joymakers for successful tours of Europe. In 2005 he did it again, beating the odds to put together a very authentic sounding New Orleans jazz band for a new tour. Several of the musicians and singer Topsy Chapman worked with Kellin when he was in the One Mo' Time show years ago. The concert that is released in full on 2005 has plenty of variety with four vocals from Topsy Chapman, four by banjoist Detroit Brooks, one from Walter Payton, and a guest appearance on trombone by Gunhild Carling. The repertoire includes some unusual items that add to this CD's appeal including Isham Jones' "What's the Use," "I've Got the Blues for Home Sweet Home," John Brunius' "Hot Sausage Rag," and "He Touched Me." Hot ensembles and colorful solos (particularly by Kellin and Pastorius) made this a date easily recommended to collectors of revival classic jazz. ~ Scott Yanow
Orange Kellin led a two week tour in early 2005, opening with an extremely well -received concert at the Stockholm Konserthuset. A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.

The Original London Cast version of THE PAJAMA GAME features the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of John Owen Edwards.
The original London cast album of The Pajama Game was recorded in September 1955, just prior to the show's October 13 opening. (It had opened on Broadway the previous year.) That means that, by the terms of European copyright law on recordings, it passed into the public domain on January 1, 2006. Sepia Records, which specializes in creating unlicensed versions of such just-out-of-copyright material, responds here with a CD that begins with the 16 tracks featured on the old HMV LP, then adds ten bonus tracks. The London production of The Pajama Game ran a profitable 588 performances. As demonstrated here, the production succeeded by providing a near-copy of the Broadway version. A frequent problem with British productions of American shows is that the accents aren't very good, but that is not the case here. Of the principals, Max Wall and Frank Lawless sound somewhat British, but even their voices are not way off, and the rest of the cast sounds convincingly American. They also handle the score well, from the hit novelty tunes like "Hernando's Hideaway" and "Steam Heat" to the hit ballad "Hey There." Canadian Edmund Hockridge, in the leading male role played by John Raitt on Broadway, is equally big-voiced on such songs as "A New Town Is a Blue Town," and Australian Joy Nichols is just as good as the female lead. There's not much reason for an American who owns the original Broadway cast album to buy this very similar recording, but it's almost as good. The ten bonus tracks that expand the running time to 78-plus minutes consist of tracks from singles made by Nichols in the late '40s and early '50s. Most of these are novelty songs typical of the time, which she handles good-naturedly, joined by such partners as Dick Bentley and Jimmy Edwards, who also appeared with her on British radio during the period. ~ William Ruhlmann

TONES FOR JOAN'S BONES is the 1966 debut album by forward-looking jazz keyboardist Chick Corea, featuring "This Is New."
This compilation hits a bull's-eye by pulling together two key sessions: Chick Corea's first as a leader, a blazing, advanced hard bop set from 1966, and Miroslav Vitous' Mountain in the Clouds, recorded in 1969 just prior to the bassist joining the original Weather Report. Corea's writing on Tones for Joan's Bones has an affinity with McCoy Tyner's seminal hard bop structures from this period. Tenor player Joe Farrell and trumpeter Woody Shaw are ideal for this music. They deliver virtuoso performances that are both visceral and cerebral. Steve Swallow, while later focusing exclusively on electric bass, often with a melodic, impressionistic approach, is pure thunder here. In a blindfold test his acoustic bass could be mistaken for Buster Williams'. Drummer Joe Chambers is all relentless, propulsive energy, but subtle too. Corea is a torrent of harmonic and melodic imagination, couched in unerring rhythm. The Bay Area duo Rondo Brothers (Brandon Arnovick and Jim Greer) initially made their name working with Dan "The Automator" Nakamura on such inspired DJ projects as Handsome Boy Modeling School and Dr. Octagon, before Nakamura made his name loom even larger in the cartoon collective Gorillaz (under the Svengali-like workings of Damon Albarn).
