(1 Customer Review)
Released in late 2007 in the U.K. (and early '08 in the U.S.), HEY VENUS! is the Super Furry Animals' first album for the venerable Rough Trade label, marking a return to the Welsh alternative-rock ensemble's indie roots. In contrast to excellent but sometimes overblown earlier outings such as RINGS AROUND THE WORLD and PHANTOM POWER, HEY VENUS! is more concise and focused, showcasing the group's knack for strange pop-tinged gems on breezy and melodic tracks such as the orchestral "Show Your Hand" and "The Gift That Keeps Giving," a sunny ditty that's lifted by frontman Gruff Rhys's multi-tracked vocals. SFA's more rambunctious side breaks through on the glitchy, off-kilter "Neo Consumer" and the gleefully odd and amped-up "Baby Ate My Eightball," happily proving that the band's restlessness and eccentricity haven't diminished over the years.

| | Lcd Soundsystem Sound Of Silver CD (2007)
Hey Venus! CD music
$8.85 As wryly noted on LCD Soundsystem's debut 2002 single, "Losing My Edge," in the underground music arms race, aging hipsters are losing ground against young upstarts who are (perhaps) unaware of their own influences. And if influences are the stuff with which post-millennial musicians are made, Murphy has trumped us all. Touching on reference points ranging from disco, krautrock, Bowie, house, and post-punk, to singer-songwriter types, SOUND OF SILVER is a veritable catalog of left-field cool. Leading off with the slow-boil, hypnotic opener, "Get Innocuous"--which sounds a bit like a reprise of "Losing My Edge" crossed with Kraftwerk's "The Robots"--the album moves from dance-floor stormers to plaintive piano numbers without batting an eye. On "North American Scum," Murphy lampoons the often mistaken idea that LCD Soundsystem is a U.K. act; his nasal vocal echoing Jonathan Richman as he declares "for those of you who think we're from England--we're not." As humorously self-effacing as he is, SOUND OF SILVER also shows Murphy's growth as a songwriter. On the album's ...

Hey Venus! music CDs
$12.89 If modern day indie music appears to consist of an endless queue of groups that are either bland emo retreads or glitzy disco punkers, it is then that much more refreshing to encounter a band like Battles. With a lineage that consists of some of indie rock's most accomplished musicians, Battles is a veritable neo-prog supergroup, though one that embraces the possibilities of ...
| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Hey Venus! songs
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been beneficial to that supergroup. "Hot Summers Day" is a fine example of that, a beautiful song that could offset Buckingham's gritty ramblings. It would have made a nice counterpoint as Stevie Nicks complemented Christine McVie's tunes with her ...
