From director Lou Ye. Yu Hong (Lei Hao) is a rebellious young woman from a small Chinese town transplanted to a politically charged Beijing University in the late 1980s. The country's social turmoil is witnessed through its disaffected youth, whose newfound sexuality and activism culminate in violent suppression. Spanning nearly 20 years of Chinese history, this film projects the country's struggle for definition through the eyes and heart of a young man ill-equipped to handle it. While drifting between the arms of 2 different men, her love fervent for both, Yu Hong's existential crisis mirrors that of her nation. Will the chaos of society lead her to its same tragic fate? In this controversial Chinese film, a man and woman fall in love at a time and place of turmoil: China in 1989. Theatrical Release: January 18, 2008 (Limited) Summer Palace Reviews: "It's the swirling story of love in a time of revolutionary upheaval, a film where personal chaos mirrors the political to mesmerizing and unsettling effect."-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times "Subtly acted, the film is carried by Lei's brilliant emotive powers. The thoughtfully rendered mise en scène and the decision to intercut actual footage of the Tiananmen Square protests, brings us closer to vérité experience."-- Film Comment Staff, Film Comment "[A] beautiful and passionate film....Remarkable for its candor about politics and sex."-- A. O. Scott, New York Times

Summer Palace movie DVD
$16.89 The title refers to the night when three men, Randy (Matt Dillon), his cousin Carl (Paul Reiser) and Detective Dehling (John Goodman), all meet Jewel Valentine (Liv Tyler) at a bar called McCool's. Actually, they don't so much meet her as fall under her spell when they first lay eyes on her. In her clinging red dress she looks like a cross between a beautiful damsel in distress and the Lady In Red looking for John Dillinger. The story begins with Randy, desperate to be rid of Jewel, hiring a sleazy hitman, played by Michael Douglas in an outré toupee. His story of how Jewel led him to ruin, filmed in a stylized flashback bathed in blue, is mirrored by Carl talking to his therapist--played with a delicious verve by Reba McEntire, and Detective Dehling ...
