Best album
$10.09 After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck "Must Be Santa," which barrelhouses like a barroom, Dylan doesn't really reinterpret these songs as much as simply play them with his crackerjack road band, dropping in a little flair -- restoring "we'll have to muddle through somehow" to "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," singing the opening of "O Come All Ye Faithful" in its original Latin -- but never pushing tunes in unexpected directions. Many would argue having Dylan croon these carols is unexpected enough and, true, there are times his gravelly rumble is a bit ...
| | Trans-Siberian Orchestra Night Castle CDs (2009)
Best CD music
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version of "Nutrocker" ever cut, doesn't do much to break that spell. But for those already enchanted by the Orchestra, this will continue to enthrall.

| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Best songs
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef Jean -- is giddily addicting, a celebration of all the strange sensuality that comes out at night. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Best album
$13.75 At times, it was hard to figure out whether Berlin were an average synth pop band trying to carve out their own niche or just a mediocre rock band jumping on the new wave bandwagon. Sure, they had some good singles and radio hits, but as an album band, they left a lot to be desired. Terri Nunn was beautiful and sexy, but it seemed like Berlin wanted to be more than just a commercial band with a hot vocalist: they seemed to be striving for greatness but settled for "that'll do." Unfortunately, they never had a chance to really prove themselves, breaking up after their commercially disappointing Count Three & Pray album, released in 1986. Nunn has kept the Berlin name alive over the years, touring with a different group of musicians and playing all the hits while releasing the occasional studio or live album. With a recorded output that seems to dwindle in quality with every release, one might hope that All the Way In would deviate from the standard "live hits" collection and offer up something really special. Sadly, that's not entirely the case. All the Way In was recorded live at The House of Blues in Anaheim, CA. The HOB is located very near the heart of the OC music scene, where Berlin started more than two decades ago. This homecoming show promised much but delivered very little.
Backed by three musicians who look like Nine Inch Nails refugees, Nunn is still as beautiful and sexy as ever, and her voice sounds great, but there doesn't seem to be ...

It has received radio play in 15 countries and counting.Songwriter Steve Young (ex. 'Seven Bridges Road') says:"I have heard Katrina Bishop's 'Good Night For Stars' and I think it's fantastic! I have gone through periods of not even listening to music. An experience like this shows the value of doing so." Reviews:"I could kick myself when I review CDs like 'Runaway Lane' by Katrina Bishop because I wasn't listening to them long ago. The production, performance and everything else about this CD is superb. I hesitate to call any CD perfect but if there's an indie graduating class, Katrina is in it with honors." - Chris Lonsberry, IndieMusicSite.com, 2002"Blessed with a clear, strong voice and capable of writing words and music that resonate, Bishop has the complete package." - Marke Andrews, The Vancouver Sun. 2002"I will put Katrina Bishop's CD in my top 10 albums for 2002. This is what writing songs and singing is all about. Buy this album." - Eliot Popkin, Muse's Muse, 2002"Bishop's voice is strong [and] shows the same kind of flexibility and vocal candour as the likes of Jane Siberry. ...A multifaceted artist, Bishop ...

$15.35 Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).
When the Silver Apples were formed in the mid-60's, Simeon Coxe and Danny Taylor had no way of knowing that they were forging the prototype of experimental electronic music. Connecting over a dozen oscillators, Coxe created a homemade synthesizer which produced a world of futuristic bleeps, sweeps, distortions, and repetitious basslines. With the addition of Taylor's drums, they sounded like The Velvet Underground fronted by Nikola Tesla. In 1968 they released their eponymous ...

$12.59 A solo album - yet not, JULIAN PLENTI IS SKYSCRAPER is the debut album from the alter ego of Interpol's frontman Paul Banks. Plenti played acoustic performances around New York City during the late '90s until Interpol took off in 2001, but shelved the moniker until '06. Since Banks is so distinctive as Interpol's voice, it's easy to think any music he's involved in would sound like his main gig, but in fact, one of the biggest differences between this record ...
