Set in and around a 1950s juke joint in the Deep South, writer/director John Sayles's movie HONEYDRIPPER follows a talented young singer/guitarist (played by Gary Clark Jr.) as he struggles to find an audience. In addition to rollicking tunes performed by Clark Jr. (most notably the standard "Good Rockin' Tonight"), the album includes vintage songs by Hank Williams (the twangy "Move It On Over") and Memphis Slim (the bluesy "Bertha May"), as well as tracks by more contemporary artists such as Keb' Mo' (the spare traditional number "Stack O Lee"). Truth be told, the Trembling Blue Stars routine was getting kind of stale by the release of Seven Autumn Flowers in 2004. With that album they crossed the line that divides reliable and predictable; no longer did the morose lyrics, melancholy vocals, minor chords and cheesy synths make a positive impression. Luckily for fans of the band, The Last Holy Writer is a comeback of sorts, certainly an improvement, and maybe even one of their finest records. How did they do it? It's hard to say because on the surface it seems like not much has changed sound or mood-wise. There's still a preponderance of downbeat lyrics and Bob Wratten hasn't suddenly traded in his mope for a smile, no fear of that anytime soon. The genre-blending collective A3 compose a slinky rock & roll mix that's both intriguing and difficult to classify. Power in the Blood is their third album and equally complex as their previous efforts; however, A3 don't experiment or musically venture out. The electronic shtick continues to work for them, and Reverend Larry Love's brooding vocals are as sultry as ever, but Power in the Blood refuses to move beyond the band's biggest hit, "Woke Up This Morning." If you're content with A3's swampy dance template of blues and gospel, Power in the Blood delivers. From the sexy title track to the warm-hearted country flair of "Woody Guthrie," A3 are subtle and cool in offering their own political twists.
