On their third album, 11i, downtempo chillout icons Supreme Beings of Leisure keep doing what they do best. The second-wave L.A. trip-hop group first made waves with their 2000 debut album. Their profile increased even further with the follow-up two years later, and 11i sounds like a natural progression in that trajectory. As ever, the whispery, sensual vocals of Geri Soriano-Lightwood coo, croon, and playfully tease the listener while Ramin Sakurai's subtle, gently undulating beats and sparkling, atmospheric electronic textures provide the perfect framework. 11i is purportedly a concept album meant to document the various phases of time and feeling encountered over the course of a single day, but whether you pay attention to that theme or simply lie back and let the sounds envelop you, this is one big comfy chair of an album, something to sink into with hedonistic abandon.
Supreme Beings of Leisure: Geri Soriano-Lightwood (vocals); Ramin Sakurai (various instruments, programming).
Additional personnel: Marty Friedman (guitar); Geoff Brandin (guitars, slide guitar); Michelle Suh, Tzu Fang Wang, Lili Haydn (violin); Stefanie Fife (cello); Sheldon Strickland (bass guitar); Jason Graham (drums); Duke Mushroom (percussion); DJ Swamp (scratches, turntables); Scott Tibbs.

Supreme Beings Of Leisure 11i Songs 11i Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) SPoL in the search for inspiration This lates effort by SPoL is a slight return from the disco to the living room - but far from the trippiness and innovative soundscape of their debut album. You need to note that SPoL is on this, and the preceding album Divine Operating System, reduced to the two core members Sakurai and Soriano-Lightwood. The risk of running out of ideas and sticking to the limits of the computer is high, and I believe it is evidenced in this album with ad-hoc contributions by some drop-in artists. This 'decline' in musical innovation is reflected in my 'best trips of SPoL' mix: Never the Same, Last Girl on Earth, Ghetto, The Light, Touch Me, Truth from Fiction, Calamity Jane, This World, What's the deal,Good, So Much More, Under the Gun, Freezer, Sublime, Everywhere.
The reference standard of SPoL is still their debut album. Submitted by villaghazal (Inkoo, Finland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Heather Headley This Is Who I Am CD (2002)
11i music CDs
$8.99 Heather Headley was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. "I Wish I Wasn't" was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
The first solo album from Heather Headley, who won a 1998 Tony for her performance in Tim Rice and Elton John's AIDA, is slick, contemporary urban R&B with just a hint of her native Trinidadian background. Songs such as the sizzling album-opener "He Is" and the sultry "Always Been Your Girl" demonstrate her range, while the after-hours appeal of "Nature of a Man" is undeniable.
There's little trace of Headley's theatrical roots save in the variety of moods she's able to conjure, and she makes the crossover from stage to recording studio seem almost effortless. While she's obviously more at home with the balladry of songs such as "Fulltime," the lighthearted pop swing of "Sunday" is a charming hint of what she may be capable of on future outings.
Personnel: Heather Headley (background vocals); Chukki Star (rap vocals); Dallas Austin, Terrence Elliot, Jeff Mironov, ...

| | Bitter Sweet Mating Game CD (2006) Digipak
11i album
$14.39 The label says that the debut album from Bitter:Sweet (a duo featuring Supreme Being of Leisure Kiran Shahani and singer Shana Halligan) will appeal to fans of Serge Gainsbourg, Portishead, and Everything But the Girl. Hold up. How does that work again? Well, as it turns out, the album won't necessary appeal to all of those people all at the same time -- the Gainsbourg fans will get a kick out of the loungey, horn-heavy "Mating Game" (and is that a theremin heard warbling ...

$31.55 Dance-music trio Reel People's SECOND GUESS album includes "The Rain" featuring Sharlene Hector, "In The Sun", featuring Angela Johnson, and "Second Guess", featuring Jag.
British dance-pop trio Reel People's full-length debut is a throwback to the mid-'90s heyday of acid jazz, particularly the Brand New Heavies. Like that collective, the focus on Second Guess is on '70s-style smooth jazz grooves in the Steely Dan or Blackbyrds mode, the chorused guitars, rubbery fretless bass, and electric ...

11i album
$15.19 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Elton John's second album was his first to be released in the U.S., and the difference between it and its predecessor, EMPTY SKY, is palpable and immediate. ELTON JOHN opens with "Your Song," a halting ballad that is one of the most moving love songs in the modern pop canon. The album also marks John's fruitful association with Gus Dudgeon and arranger Paul Buckmaster (who'd previously collaborated on David Bowie's "Space Oddity"). The team came up with a spare orchestral sound that surrounds the singer and his piano with dashes of both ...

11i album
$13.25 Issued in early 2008, British Sea Power's third full-length studio album, DO YOU LIKE ROCK MUSIC?, finds the U.K. band admirably expanding its sound, from the beautifully noisy opener, "All in It," to its slowly unfurling companion-piece finale, "We Close Our Eyes." While the group, ...
