| | Shawn Vreeland The High Country CD Shawn Vreeland Discography of CDs
The High Country is Sacramento-based guitarist-singer-songwriter Shawn Vreeland's long-awaited debut album. Combining well-crafted songs with an Americana/country tinge and impassioned jams, this CD will appeal to both jam-band fans and those who enjoy good songwriting. The CD features outstanding backing performances from members of The East Portal Express and Kate Gaffney as well as tasteful pedal steel work from Natan Rodriguez.Excerpt from from 11/29/07 Sacramento News and Review (CD release show):The band’s guitarist, Shawn Vreeland, was the focal point, and he’d step forward and launch into meaty solos heavy with hammer-ons and pull-offs, the kind my old pals with thick mustaches would call “tasty.”Vreeland's band, the East Portal Express, had a true jam-band flavor, with Alex Bohl on bass joined by Steve Bisel on keyboards, Evan Mahoney on mandolin, Natan Rodriguez on pedal steel and, occasionally, Joaquin McPeek on congas and Kate Gaffney (whose band closed the show) guesting on vocals. According to Bohl, the flavor of the band’s set typically changes from song to song, based on who wrote the tune, and some of that was in evidence Saturday—a song by Bisel had a funky, Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia feel, whereas one by Bohl was more strongly rooted in pop-music convention. But this was Vreeland’s night—a CD-release party for his new solo disc, The High Country. Thus, much of the music had a strong Southern-rock feeling, along the lines of the Marshall Tucker Band’s work, with Vreeland taking the Toy Caldwell parts on his Heritage Les Paul, and Mahoney doing a George McCorkle behind him on mandolin. The songs—like “Deep Magnolia River” and “Find Me an Angel”—also had that ring of familiarity; nothing new here, just well-worn ingredients served nicely. The High Country album
$16.45 Welcome...I have finally come out with another long over-due album. I titled it Messages when I was asked about how I write. I find "ah-has" in my relationships with folks, what I observe and in the midsts of thought. Each song has it's inspiration, gifts and reflections.PLEASE LISTEN TO SOME OF MY SONGS ON MY MYSPACE PAGE. CD BABY COULD NOT ADEQUATELY LOAD MY MUSIC TO SOUND HOW IT ACTUALLY SOUNDS FOR THIS SITE INDIVIDUALLY. YOU CAN HIT THE PLAY ALL AND GET A BETTER IDEA THAN INDIVIDUAL SONGS. THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT THEY UPLOAD IN MONO, NOT STEREO. iF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS,GO TO: myspace.com/tinaemmettThere you will be able to listen. I've posted photo-story videos with some of the new songs too which you can properly hear before you make a decision to buy. Below you'll find the name of the song and "what" inspired it. I have posted lyrics on my myspace page in my blog section. Renew: Is about being vulnerable to love again. It is about the cycles of love lost and and gained and the hope for better things. I was inspired by a Celtic talisman reading and the song came immediately after that. It must have worked because I found love again and was open to receive it. Ah, Thank you Tony Rice for your guitar gifts.Clarity: This song is very personal. It is about my relationships with those I can't be intimate with. I acknowledge the feelings and accept that I have it pretty good. I embrace what I do have and share my findings with others. Being that I am a musician, I come across many folks that I could be "in-love" with; yet the consequence of acting on it, is costly. Derek Doggett plays a great guitar on this track. What it Takes: I wrote this song for my friends. Two people inspired me years ago to get the lyrics and music down. Those were Steve and Brenda Adams. It is a song about being supported and paying tribute.Road Ahead: It is a very sad song in that I admit I don't know where I'm going or headed yet I'm driven to move forward. In the wake of my successes, I seem to make people sad and get blamed and reasoned for their upset. I acknowledge that some folks really don't want you to be happy when they say otherwise. I also realize that I've stopped myself when I felt my success has hurt someone and then I become disappointed. This is a cycle that keeps getting created for me and even now; I don't know how to deal with it, so I escape in writing.Get to Be Right: I don't have much else to add to this for the title speaks on it's own. All I can add is that there is a huge cost for being right. Steve Adams plays so sweetly on this song.Arrogance: This song is for people who think the are better than me. Thank you for the inspiration!Lyin' is the Game: I had to write how I feel about politicians. Given the nature of our current American leadership, I felt this song to fit appropriately. Moreover, I believe this song fitting for all leaders who abuse power and not take responsibility for their actions. This is another song about the "costs" of totalitarian thought. My husband, Chael Emmett plays a nice flugel horn.Gone: This is another politically motivated song. I wrote this right after 9-11 and pre-Iraqi war. When I saw the WTC buildings disappear ...
