2007 has proven to be a successful year for Dodd Michael Lede and the members of The DML Cartel. The band has just released its debut CD, Word Of Mouth, and also holds the coveted house band slot for The Houston Texans.Along with playing a regular schedule of shows, the band has recently been featured on local television, performing on the Great Day Houston show, and has also appeared on 94.5 The Buzz's local show, The Texas Buzz. The DML Cartel was formed out of Bare Necessity, a working cover band based in the Galveston area consisting of a group of friends with a passion for music. Lede joined original members Derek Prather (guitar), Brooks Rogers (drums), & Fred Morecraft (bass) in September of 2004 replacing their previous singer to fill the bands need for a dynamic front man.The inclusion of guitarist, John Rinkus, led to the creation of a second group — The DML Cartel, which plays original music, as opposed to Bare Necessity’s use of previously written material.“I had been working with John in the studio recording tracks for what would become Word Of Mouth and performing with Bare Necessity live. I was bouncing back & forth between the two projects, so it seemed like a great idea to join both forces and create something new.” says Lede. The band has performed under both monikers for the past year attempting to phase out the cover band aspects of Bare Necessity and cultivate a following, with their original music, as The DML Cartel.“This is a rock & roll science project.” Dodd muses, “It all has to do with chemistry. The chemistry between the players, and the chemistry of combining various influences together just to see what if would have sounded like if they had thought of it first.”Lede, who has two prior releases, 2002's "Whatever Happened to You", and 2004's "Sophomore Jinx", is no stranger to the business side of the music industry. Lede is the founder of Sonic Smack Records and has also released music from previous bands as well as Myrna Sanders 2003 release, "Riches to Rags" in which he also wrote the song, "Closure".Each song on Word Of Mouth remains clear and focused. There is a sense of maturity about the songwriting, but there is no mistaking that the underlying influences are very rock & roll.Melodic chord structures, vocal hooks and harmonies, and layers of guitar driven grace and tone, this catalog of songs should solidify Lede’s place as a songwriter in his own right. The inspirations and personal demons create an autobiography of true stories set to music. The end result is a collection of stirring and evocative songs. Lede has a knack for stimulating the tired old clichéd sounds that are prevalent in much of today's music. He has stepped outside of the cookie-cutter box trap that most bands fall into, not to invent a new genre, but to redefine an existing one.For more information, visit the band’s websites at www.dmlcartel.com and www.acousticoutlaw.com, or their Myspace page at www.myspace.com/dmlcartel. | Word Of Mouth Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) A very good CD The DML Cartel’s CD “Word of Mouth” feels like a musical journey through the life of the composer Dodd Michael Lede and the people in his life. Every song feels like it is truly about someone or something that has touched his life. That is what makes this CD so easy to relate to. There are struggles that we all face in our day to day lives, and I’m sure… You like me, will find something in “Word of Mouth” that will make you feel like you are not alone.
On this musical journey you will find gems like the one that the CD starts off with. It is a Gin Blossoms-ish sounding song called “Best of Monday Night”. This song feels to be about moving on to follow your dreams, and even though you have to leave everything behind… You know it is the right thing to do, and you never forget the ones that you left behind. A few songs into the CD you come across a song called “Strong”. This song seems to be about learning from a relationship and how to stay strong and move on… One of my favorite lines from the song is “Baby, I’m just that strong!” The CD ends with a song called “Pretend” about growing up and wanting everyone to know who you really are beneath the surface.
I did save my personal favorite for last… The song “Pocket Full of Reason’s” belongs on every Rock radio station’s play list in the country. One part of the song says, “She’s an ordinary girl/Trapped inside a private hell.” There is just something about that song that makes me feel like I can relate to the person that it is being sung about. There are times in everyone’s life when they feel like this.
If you want a CD that has inspiring, passionate, and touching songs, “Word of Mouth” is defiantly worth the money. I have listened to it over and over again, and I have yet to get tired of any of the songs. Submitted by Kim (Houston, Texas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place ...

$5.99 By HANNAH WIESTStar-Tribune staff writerFriday, November 9, 2007 8:43 AM MST Writing about bands is terrifying. How do you do drum beats and guitar riffs, vocals and the songwriting process any kind of justice with words on paper? So I sit down to write this morning a nervous wreck.I put Spin Zero's new CD, "Air and Opportunity," into my player and ask it to play muse. I sit up straight and put my fingers on the keys.Nothing.Then I realize my fingers are tapping the beat. My eyes are closed and I'm lost in a melody driven along by dissonant but soothing chords. Pow! My eyes fly open. I do some cubicle-appropriate head banging to the hard-driving choruses reminiscent of Nirvana. This is good. If people give it a chance when it releases on Saturday, I think they'll dig it."Treason" jumpstarts the heart and keeps it pumping as Jason Sheppard stays just below a gravelly scream."Aphasia" feels like you've sucked in your last breath and will never let it out. It's a fitting title since the word means a loss of the power to use or comprehend words. The acoustic guitar is backed by lead guitarist James Parsons on cello and bassist Shane Singleton on violin."Priority", the band's self-described beer song, makes you want to jump onto the table and sway like a drunken sailor.I crank the volume. The night before, I was standing in front of a house speaker at a band jam session. Spin Zero rehearses in an office-sized room at show volume -- somewhere around 110 decibels."When you write the article, please don't mention our influences," says Mike Devins from behind ...
