Revenge album
$10.59 As the sole major-label progressive-metal act, Dream Theater invariably set the standard as the flagship band of the genre. With the numerically themed OCTAVARIUM (including eight tracks signifying the band's eighth release) the shred-rock quintet continues to challenge themselves creatively. Opening track "The Root Of All Evil" picks up the thread that began with "The Glass Prison" (SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE) and carried forward to "This Dying Soul" (TRAIN OF THOUGHT). Drummer Mike Portnoy's lyrics for these songs read like a set of deeply personal journal entries documenting his painful recovery experience, further disclosed by a footnote nod to Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson. OCTAVARIUM chiefly finds Dream Theater stepping back from elaborate fretboard acrobatics, focusing on vocal-based, song-oriented material ("I Walk Beside You," "The Answer Lies Within"); much in the spirit of AWAKE and their breakthrough album IMAGES AND WORDS. "Sacrificed Sons" captures the heartbreak of the 9/11 tragedy, while the grandiose title track showcases a melodic, Styx-inspired keyboard solo by Jordan Rudess (better known for a blisteringly frenetic style). Twenty years since their inception, ...
| | Dream Theater Black Clouds & Silver Linings CDs (2009) Special Edition
Revenge CD music
$21.19 Special Edition CD includes the full album, a CD of instrumental mixes of the album and a CD of six cover songs.
Dream Theater's tenth long-player is about as dense and challenging as any album in the band's discography and emphasizes not only the virtuoso members' stupefying musicianship, but also their most aggressive and thoroughly metallic songwriting tendencies. The sixteen-minute opener "A Nightmare to Remember" quickly establishes this agenda via frequently thrash-paced staccato riffing, some of John Petrucci's most blistering guitar solos ever, and the return of drummer Mike Portnoy's syncopated growls, which provide contrast for singer James LaBrie's soaring melodic elegance. "The Count of Tuscany" is a heady prog-metal magnum opus brimming with more ideas, notes, and time changes over 19 minutes than most bands bother with over a ten album career. In fact, "Whither," a tender ballad and mere babe at five minutes in length, ...
| | Fates Warning FWX CD (2004)
Revenge music CDs
$10.49 FWX is a milestone for Fates Warning, marking 20 years since the band's debut, NIGHT ON BROCKEN. The album signals the end of one era, as departing drummer Mark Zonder's last with the group, and the beginning of another, as Fates make their first foray into producing their own records. While often compared to their prog-metal peers, Fates Warning are far less technical in their approach. What makes them progressive, and consistently sets them apart, is the lush mood and atmosphere they create. On FWX, their 10th studio album, the emotional tapestry of the group's songwriting carries a subtext of melancholy, personal reflection.
"Left Here" is close kin to the band's early-to-mid 1990s sound, while much of FWX ("Simple Human" and "Wish," especially) carries the aggressive touch established on DISCONNECTED (2000) and A PLEASANT SHADE OF GRAY (1998). "River Wide Ocean Deep" matches singer Ray Alder at his brooding best with ...
| | Stryper Reborn CD (2005) Enhanced CD
Revenge songs
$11.65 With their first album of all-original material since 1990's AGAINST THE LAW, Christian heavy metal band Stryper do more than drum up their glory days on 2005's REBORN. The intervening 15 years did little to diminish Stryper's attack: the band still thunders with both glitz and muscle, and lead singer Michael Sweet sounds as sharp as ever. Likewise, Stryper's commitment to their faith hasn't wavered an iota, as the messages on songs like "Passion" and the title track prove. In the midst of the many Christian metal bands inspired by Stryper's model, REBORN finds the fathers of the genre reasserting their worth.

| | Edguy Rocket Ride CD (2006) Bonus Tracks
Revenge album
$13.85 It's easy to belittle power metal bands because they often marry portentous musical ambitions with hackneyed Manowar-like posturing that only a 12-year-old could possibly buy into; Germany's Edguy, however, are clever enough to flip those tables by making it evident that they don't take themselves all that seriously. Eight albums into the quintet's career, Edguy have in many ways succeeded where genre daddies Helloween first bit the dust -- injecting ample doses of fun, on-stage glam-metal gymnastics, Scorpions-like face pulling, and unselfconscious humor into what is normally an outwardly austere musical style, and 2006's Rocket Ride is no exception. Possibly validated even further by the recent emergence of Britain's the Darkness, this album's relaxed vibe begins with its silly-aliens-on-crack cover art and culminates in a clutch of amusing ditties about pulling birds ("Catch of the Century"), portly lovers ("Out of Vogue," "Trinidad"), and superheroes (err, "Superheroes"). On their way there, Edguy deliver a surprisingly catchy set of hard rockers ("Wasted Time," "Matrix") and unexaggerated ballads ("The Asylum," "Save Me,"), while rarely relying on power metal's ...

| | Chet Trumpet Baker Baby Breeze CD (1965)
Revenge music CDs
$12.69 This 1999 reissue contains five bonus tracks not included on the original release.
After a five year European sojourn (including time in an Italian jail) cool jazz trumpeter Chet Baker returned to the States in good form to record this unusual date for the Limelight label in 1964. For starters, he was playing flugelhorn, an instrument he'd recently acquired to replace a stolen trumpet in France. Secondly, the date was produced by Bobby Scott, the English composer of "A Taste Of Honey," included here as a bonus track. Baker sings the folk-like melody with conviction, accompanied only by Scott himself on piano. In fact, Baker's plaintive vocals on this tune and others like Mel Torme's "Born To be Blue" and Ray Noble's "The Touch Of Your Lips" represent his best singing on record in a decade.
The session is smartly divided between these minimally accompanied vocals--the understated guitarist Kenny Burrell makes a welcome appearance on some--and straight-ahead instrumentals with full combo including the fine altoist Frank Strozier. The rich-toned flugelhorn suits Baker's characteristic lyricism and he negotiates pianist Hal Galper's originals with aplomb.
Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves (PolyGram Studios).
